4:45 AM, and I was awake a quarter hour before my alarm clock. I rolled over in my sleeping bag to look at my tent ceiling, not twelve inches from my nose. “Oh well, might as well get going,” I thought to myself, unzipping my way into the cold darkness outside. The tent fly zipper stuck for a moment, reminding me of another cold morning in the French Alps when the condensed moisture of my breath had frozen and jammed up the zippers of my tent just as I most desperately needed to heed the call of nature… In the confines of a one-man pup tent I struggled into not one but two pairs of winter bicycling tights, jammed a knit wool cap down over my ears and strapped my bike helmet on top of it, ... read more

Today I met up with my good friend Abena who used to live in NZ. I’ve been promising this girl for 4 years that I will come and visit her “next year” since she moved over! Finally “next year” turned into next week, then tomorrow, and now today! She took me into her campus - John Hopkins Uni. We had lunch and this Indian restaurant. My goodness the food was good!! We hung out with her friend in her beautiful apartment. It has these insane little back door & mesh on the window, looking like a prison. When you go inside you find they're two level homes (although 2 bedrooms) with gorgeous interior. I was really inspired by the african decor in the home. Dinner was spent at my aunty’s place. That was great - meeting ... read more

Yay I arrived in America safe and sound! The flights were smooth - except for the one tense moment where turbulence forced the cabin crew to stop giving out dinner and rush off to their seats! My welcome in US has been interesting so far. I've haven't really done anything tourist-ish yet. The humdrum of life has been interesting enough so far! One thing I've noticed is the amount of apartment buildings all through the city and suburbs. Reminds me of a campus - they all look like dorms! There really is a stark difference between the "up-down" and the "down town". My highlight so far has been the Nigerian restaurant we visited this afternoon. It has a nice ambience. Real nice & homely.... read more

Thursday January 19th, 2006 http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_Ej.html Link of flight map from BWI to Prague. Oh my, what a busy day. Bill - Paul and Melanie arrived at our house about four-thirty in the afternoon to take us to BWI airport. Our flight was scheduled to lift off at eight-forty five in the evening. We were both exhausted from the frenzied activities of the last two days, much of Nancy’s time had been spent revising our wills that our lawyer had totally messed up., With help (from another lawyer) we were able to file a better copy with the Register of Wills at our county courthouse. We are under no illusions that our latest will is prefect, but we are confident that it is not the total disaster of the one we replaced. This plus having the oil ... read more

Welcome to my blog! For those who don't know what a blog is it is an online journal that you can write whatever you want in, just like a journal that you keep at home except that blogs are (usually) public. My blog is a travel blog so I will tell you mostly details of my trip. I'm still in the USA but I've posted some pictures from a trip I took to india 5 years ago. I've been looking at them myself and getting excited to return.... read more

By now, Nov. 2nd we thought we would be adding to this blog from Prague, the Czech, but events overtook plans resulting in one trip being delayed and another, a trip of healing begun. Today, October 5th, was not a good day. It started off all right, but ended up badly. I drove to Bowie this morning to have an MRI that I will send to Johns Hopkins so they can check on the acoustic neuroma. I then drove home and did some work around the house. In the afternoon I went to the back yard to continue pruning the two smaller apple trees. All went well until I lost my balance. I was about seven or eight feet above the ground. Once I realized that I could not stay on the ladder I jumped figuring ... read more

Its finally time to take-off- It was an early morning for mom and i, getting last minute things, making sure i had all of my medications for my diabetes and such, and finally driving to Baltimore to catch the plane. I guess i was a little nervous, barely ate anything, although my mom bought me a delicious lunch. So mom gave me gold fishes to munch on while i was on the plane. I think i was more excited than anything, but upset that i was leaving zach and home for the next 2 months.. here are a few pics of my bags being packed, the group of us before take-off, the first plane ride where jen almost ripped my hand off(first flyer!!) and my oh-so delicious meal i ate, NOT. Today we're heading out from Sparks to Prince Frederick, still in the state of Maryland. Yesterday we walked 2 of the 3 dogs, Sam and Libby (see photo) along Gunpowder Falls, a nice walking/biking path that runs all the way from Baltimore north to the Pennsylvania line. We were also treated to a nice dinner by Diane and Alan, capped off with a delicious dessert prepared by Diane: fresh berries w/ her famous whipped creme with Grand Marnier (see photo). Again, yum. Today we dragged our butts out of bed and had a 3 mi run along the same trail along the Gunpowder. Weather here = nothing like Southern California this time of year: a) it rained and b) I'd estimate that humidity was somewhere close to %150. The countryside is beautiful here with lots of ... read more

Another quick entry. We're staying with Sherry's aunt Diane and uncle Alan in Sparks, MD, just north of Baltimore. Yesterday we took mass transit out of Manhattan to NJ to pick up our car, then we drove to Philadelphia for lunch w/ my friend Sean and his wife Dea. As has been the case all along our trip route, we were running about 2-3 hours late, but we had a nice mid-afternoon bite at Sean and Dea's old pizza place, Garrett Hill Pizza near Villanova, PA. I'd definitely recommend a stop at GHP if you're in the area. This morning was spent consuming coffee and a home-cooked breakfast with great grits. In a word, Yum. Today we'll probably just relax before heading south to Washington DC tomorrow. Probably the funniest thing that's happened over the past ... read more
