Bill & Nancy at the city dock
Bill and Nancy at a summer concert at the Annapolis City Dock. I must have looked through over 500 digitally stored pictures before I found one where the two of us are in the same photo. This photo was taken by our friend Dr. Bill Kinzer. Bill was at the concert, saw us and snapped our picture. Usually I, Bill, can never prove through pictures that I have been anywhere.
Today is a rainy, cloudy day here as Bill and I are doing more preparation for our upcoming trip to the Czech Republic. Trip? More like sojourn since we will be there for six months. Six months doesn’t seem long when you start thinking about it but I know very well how long six months can be. Bill spent six months in China in 1995. Sun Hai and Wang Jing were living with me when he left. They were students at St. John’s College at that time. The three of us eagerly awaited his snail mail letters that arrived every week and sometimes twice a week. I had to have a front tooth removed since it was cracked and I had an implanted tooth done. Gladys Lambert had to drive me back and forth during the times when I was put to sleep for oral surgery. She and I walked over the Bay Bridge together on Bridge Day. I had my “frozen shoulder” operated on and Wang Jing and Benny Eng (now a married couple) drove me to the hospital for the surgery and then to the physical therapist for my first treatment. Xiao Shui Gen and Wang Li came over the next day and took me home with them so she could take care of me while I still had to take strong pain medication. It was nice to have a doctor taking me in and loving me. Lu Lu and Dong Ae had me spend some weekends and took me to an AOL party and an air show. Eva Moy and I trimmed trees (well we also cut down some trees and bushes) and dub chrysanthemums together. Six months was a long time and it was also an eventful time. Then in 2000 we spent six months together in China. I can’t even remember a tenth of the wonderful things that happened in six months. But I do remember it seemed like a large part of my life. I also remember it was not long enough so I managed to talk everyone into letting me stay an extra three months so I could stretch my time out to 9 months. I really wanted to stay six more. So six months can be long and short. It will be interesting to see how long THIS six months seems.
We bought Band Aid blister bandages so we can do lots of hiking. We bought a tube of Vaseline so my lips won’t chap. I got blood drawn to check my cholesterol and other things that might need some care before we leave. We have a big pile of books to mail via M-BAG later this week so I will have something to read in the long winter evenings. We mailed a box last week of non-perfumed detergent and soaps and my favorite triple layer Chinese long underwear to keep me warm. (and a flannel sheet to keep me warm). We are in prep stage. What will we forget? What will we overload on that we never use? I still need to write my presentation for the conference and get an abstract sent ahead for the schedule, I need to finish all the library books I have checked out, I need to decide if I am getting a perm so my hair will be less trouble. On and on so much to prepare for either a long six months or a short six months.
