Assateaque Island Last fall we traveled to Ocean City, MD. While there we visited Assateaque Island which is about 5-8 miles south of Ocean City. The island is now a nature preserve with many different type of occupants. One of the more well known is a small bred of horses that migrate from the island to the mainland every year in the fall. The horses seem to be a cross between a burro and horse and are extremely friendly. The only bad part of that is that they bite Along with the horses; there are deer, rabbits, a wide variety of birds and tourists. On one side of the island there is the bay which has a totally different variety than the other side of the island. The ocean side of the island is how beaches ... read more

Hello y'all! I had so much fun last time in the Inner Harbor, that I decided to go on back there and check out some more of the sights... Having lived the "wild life" (har har) myself in Africa, I was amazed to see so many other creatures out and about in a big American city... It's definitely a different world here--but seeing my fellow fauna makes me feel right at home. I also want to take this chance to remind all of you checking out my blog to go ahead an click the "subscribe" link so you'll receive an email when I post a new entry! But without further ado, here are the pictures--a whopping 10 this time!!!... read more

On Day 3 we drove through Georgetown, one of the surrounding DC neighborhoods, on the way to Annapolis. What a cute area! With it’s beautiful old houses and neat shops, restaurants and cafes lining the main street, this is definitely an area that we would like to come back to when we have more time. This time though it’s just a quick drive through on our way to Annapolis, the capital of Maryland. We got to our hotel by 12.30, checked in and hit the streets. The historic downtown and harbour area was easy walking distance from our hotel and we were able to cover all the main attractions in one afternoon. Unfortunately it happened to be a very hot afternoon so we had to break up our outdoor walking with lots of visits to air-conditioned ... read more

Hello friends! Well, I've finally gotten out to my first adventure...exploring nautical history at Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Specifically, I spent quite a bit of time on the historic U.S.S. Constellation...the last all-sail ship built by the American Navy, before the Civil War! It makes me wonder if in olden times, for the very first zoos, my ancestors were brought over on sailing ships like this. Quite an overpowering and fascinating thought! Luckily it was a gorgeous day and I had so much fun! But let's get to the fun stuff...the pictures! Be sure to see all 6....and stay tuned for more adventures! ... read more

Well, it's been a few days now, and I'm really enjoying myself. I've got a sweet set-up with some friends in the area--though I decided to crash with them at last minute, they still were able to accomodate me in my own room. I'm planning lots of trips because I'm not sure when I'll have this opportunity again, after all keeping track of all the humans at work is quite demanding! Give my love to Victoria. I'm sure she misses me (just as much as I miss her!), but I'm OK and wouldn't trade this opportunity for anything.... read more

this is but a preface to the many things to come. it is still july, and Nick and I are preparing ourselves mentally for a trip to Ireland that will doubtless prove to be a highlight of my college experience. chronicling this trip for posterity seems most prudent, as well as providing a lovely way to dodge the incessant emails my mother will invariably send requesting every detail of the venture. on september 2nd our flight will leave, and the journey will begin. Until then, however, I am relegated to waiting with baited breath for the day I can start packing, signaling the true beginning of my trip. Oh, and I need to find a camera. That just may prove useful during my semester.... read more

After way too long in airplanes and airports I made it home again. With very little sleep and no showers. Good times...I'll hopefully get some pictures up sometime soon. Thanks for reading!... read more

Somewhere around mile 280 I muttered, “To hell with this,” and kicked it into turbo. I’d already been riding over 28 hours, and I was determined to meet my goal of finishing all 375 miles in less than 36 hours. It seemed like a ludicrous goal, but don’t get in the way of an endorphin junkie. And I was an endorphin junkie on a bender. “Mind over matter,” I counseled myself, “You’ve been averaging 15.1 miles per hour so far. Keep it up for another 5 hours and you’ve got it made. 75 miles to the finish, you can cover that in 5 hours at 15 mph and finish within 36 hours. So I grinned to myself in sheer idiocy, firmly fixed the gorgeous smile of my baby daughter Abigayle in my mind and tucked into ... read more

in only 22 more days (not including today) james, dan, and i will be off to europe for a glorious 8 weeks. james and i have never gone abroad like this before, but dan has been living in antigua by himself for the last several months, so i feel safer having him around. our plan is to fly into stansted airport in london from dulles airport in virginia. we'll spend a few days in london, mosey on over to paris, then madrid and barcelona, etc etc. we have a basic idea of the cities we'd like to visit, but not actual locations within the cities... i enjoy not having a strict itinerary to follow. hopefully it'll make things interesting. we'd like to make our way all over europe by working in a rough counter-clockwise circle. hopefully ... read more

On Sunday night I travelled back to Baltimore by bus. As my dear friend Abena put it, I had my first Greyhound experience. For a 4 hours bus ride it felt rather short! I was sceptical how good the ride would be given the threats made by the bus driver to throw anyone off the bus if he heard any beeping pagers or cell phones.... Ahh, the hospitality of America. Why back to Baltimore? I'm struggling to find an answer myself.... the main reason was for more shopping and more time spent with my uncle & Abena. I was able to catch a small glimpse of Inner Harbour although it was at night, and a Monday for that matter. What I did see was nice - art deco. We had desert at a restaurant called "The ... read more
