We took the Metro train into Washington DC and got off at the National Mall. Our original intent was to walk the loop around it, through the Smithsonian buildings, to Capitol Hill, back down the other side to the Washington Monument, walk over to see the Lincoln Memorial, then back to the train station. We did not, however, anticipate how many buildings there were, how extensive the displays were, or simply how large the National Mall is. From one to the other (Capital Building to Washington Memorial) is about 2 miles, and most of the buildings closed at 5:30. So we concentrated on going to the Smithsonian buildings we most wanted to go to. Jacquie wanted to go into the Freer Art Gallery. The collection of one person... read more

OK, we bought the Morgan 60 - closed on June 27th. Loaded up our ditty bags and by July 1st we set off from Deale, MD - Herrignton Harbor North Marina for Houston - during Hurriance season - seemed like a good idea at the time.....no storms in the Atlantic or Caribbean - so no worries. In 10 days we would be in Key West and then 5 or 6 more we would be in Galveston - what could go wrong - eh? A boat we did not know, with systems that were old but working, with a skipper and crew who had never been sailing on the East Coast at all - piece of cake.....as it turns out the schedule was right - but the trip was hard...very hard. Details: Left July 1st at 0300 ... read more

FINALLY our new website is ready for public eyes. www.sailpacifica.com Some of you may know that Dave and I have been planning to do some charters on our catamaran. Our website not only has all the info about the boat, our schedule, how/what/when to come sailing with us, but it is also the home of our new combined blog. Many of you like to have the email notifications when I update the blog. Unfortunately I'm not able to register you on the new one, you will need to do that yourselves. Just go to www.sailpacifica.com and click on the Subscribe link on the top right corner. We have been updating that site for several weeks, with lots of new photos, so check it out. I'd be most grateful if you could help support our little business ... read more

Yes Dave and I are engaged. Dave proposed while we where in Annapolis and well I said, yes. Quite a shock, I was completely surprised. This is what he needed to prepare for my birthday. He kept asking me what I wanted and I really didn't want much (there is only so much room on the boat). I wanted to go to starbucks, have a coffee, read the paper and I wanted to take a shore shower (i.e. lots of hot running water). Well instead I got a big diamond ring! I did get the shower too:)) We've been pretty busy working on the boat, the house our 'business' plan and sailing shcedule so we have not even gotten close to picking out a date, probably a year or more out. We aren't really sure yet ... read more

We hung around in New York for a few weeks, getting the boat together. Dave installed a nice little furnace so we've been able to survive. We headed out early one morning from Long Island through New York Harbor. That was such a great trip. Sailing down the east river (luckily no ice chunks in our way) and making it through the infamous hells gate (a very narrow crowded bend in the river notorious for very swift tides). Sailing past all the high rises and around the Statue of Liberty was a chance of a life time. We heading offshore and had a wonderful sail all day south and then tucked into the ICW (Intercoastal Waterway) down in New Jersey. The next day we motored down the ICW and went under many fixed and opening bridges. ... read more

This year, Mark has spent almost a week a month at different courses for work which means that he is sometimes gone for a week. As you have seen from a previous blog, I am a big chicken when it comes to staying home alone here. I have no clue why I am like that, but every noise I hear means somebody is coming to get me. And if I watch CSI or Law and Order when I am home alone, I’m just up all night with the light on. Anyways, so I wasn’t in the mood to stay home alone, so I decided that I would go home for a visit. The next time we were due to be home is in August and one of my best friends, Angela, is pregnant with a little ... read more

One of the wonderful things about living in Annapolis is the Chesapeake Bay and the waters that surround our city. Each Christmas time local sailors enjoy themselves with decorating their boats, yachts and dinghies for the holidays. They may have Santa Claus and reindeer or Christmas Trees or Hannakuk lights or tropical scenes complete with Saint Nick on the beach. Some animate animals or people or toys and have elaborate movements in the scenes on their boats. Now no one goes to all this trouble and then is content to leave their handiwork at a dock somewhere. So on an early Saturday night in December there is a boat ‘parade’ downtown at the dock. All the decorated boats get in some sort of line and circle around and around the water between Eastport and Annapolis city ... read more
