WELL I've been back in the States, and now I need to leave again. I am going to live in France for a little while this summer. It's a small village called Barcelonette in the Ubaye Valley in the Alps. This should be very interesting because it will definitely mean a very different taste....small local village life (all in French mind you) with a rich culture. I'm really excited! Also, I am on a quest to stay on in Europe after my Ubaye town is up. I plan to make a circle: north to Switzerland, down to Italy around Turino, then into Provence. Wish me luck. Feel free to send me money and offer me places to stay!... read more

Block after block of abandoned suburbia stretched out in front of me at the foot of the interstate off-ramp. To the left stood a shuttered shopping plaza, plywood covering the windows of the oversized department store. The random parking lot litter of shopping carts was replaced by flood-damaged cars and trucks that more often than not did not rest upon four wheels, but leaned up against light poles or lay flipped over in the grassy median. And of course, there were the boats. Judging by the number of bass boats, ski boats, sail boats, speed boats and boats in general, just about every resident of New Orleans must have owned a boat. Turn a corner, and there’s a bass boat protruding from a church window. Turn another corner and a sailboat lies atop a pickup truck, ... read more

Monday 1/9/2006 So I was trying to figure out how to document my journey for one of the organizations that sponsored my trip and I came across this website. I figured since I failed to maintain so many paper journals in the past, I might succeed at something new. For those who will follow this journal realize that I will be typing under time constraints so if there are errors, trust that time was not on my side that day. So I am preparing to go and more nervous than I have ever been prior to an international trip. It could be that I'm apprehensive about traveling so far for the 1st time alone. During my trips to Cameroon and South Africa, I had a group or at least partners and a host team. It could ... read more

Jan 3, 2006 A little back ground first. We are Scott & Rachel and we've been together for almost 9 years now. Rachel is the looks and the brains of this opperation and don't let her tell you otherwise. She's brilliant, intelligent and pretty easy on the eyes, at least I think so and she's a biologist by trade. Mostly she spends her time writting documents for the government. This probably explains why I'm doing the journal entries. For those of you who have never read a govenment document, read one then you may understand the above comment. And no, I will not appollegize foe any misspelled wyrds. If I have access to Spell Check, you'll know. Myself: Taurus, Favorite color: green , Underachiever, ducker of responcibility, Proud New Orleanian and travel fanatic. As you can ... read more

There is a place north of New Orleans called Pass Manchac or as the locals call it "Manchac." Pass Manchac is the home of Middendor's - a wonderful seafood restuarant that has been there longer than most people can remember. Pass Manchac is a small waterway that connects Lake Ponchartrain to Lake Maurpaus. On a thin sliver of land is the town of Pass Manchac. Residing on that land is Middendorf's. This is a small, crowded, noisy seafood restaurant that serves great seafood. There are no big signs that say "Authentic Cajun Food" or any such tourist nonsense. This is a real, local restaurant that serves great food. For generations, people from New Orleans (home of a few good seafood restaurants :-) ) have taken the 45-minute drive north to find. People from the north lake ... read more

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AUSTIN! On Saturday morning we set off at 7am for the long drive via Houston to Baton Rouge in Louisiana. This part of the trip was a bonus. We were supposed to go to New Orleans but instead Fitz arranged for us to camp at his dad's place for two nights just outside Baton Rouge. On Saturday night, Fitz took us to the 'homecoming' football game at his old college, Louisana State University and we had a fine time "tailgating" (eating Jamabalaya and drinking beer from the back of a pick-up before the game), buying t-shirts, hats and pom-poms, supporting LSU and trying to enjoy what has to be the most boring game in the world but wrapped up in the most amazing spectacle and enthusiasm complete with cheerleaders and huge marching band. LSU ... read more

Shannon: After spending a few days in Spokane with family at Sean’s mom’s house, we moved on to Sean’s dad’s house in Port Orchard, hanging out with family and visiting friends in Seattle and Portland. On September 15, 2005 Mayor C. Ray Nagin officially announced that areas of New Orleans would be opened in stages - first Algiers on September 21, 2005, then a part of Uptown (zip code 70115 - our area) would be opened 2 days later. We spent most of the day on the phone from Port Orchard trying to make arrangements to get down there and get our stuff moved to Seattle. We finally nabbed flights into Jackson, MS with the plan that we would pick up a moving truck from there and drive into New Orleans. But of course, it couldn’t ... read more
