PETE AND POLLY A Chinese girl named Lalu Nathoy was born to a struggling farmer up near the Mongolian border in 1853. Raising a crop was hard enough in that country even without being frequently raided by Mongolian bandits whose crops had also failed. 1870 was a particularly hard year and Lalu’s dad could not feed all of his children so he traded Lalu to some raiders for enough seed to try another crop. The raiders sold her in to a life of slavery and prostitution. The Six Companies was an outfit that provided Chinese workers to the Central Pacific Railroad and to the mines in the American West. She went first to San Francisco, and then was traded by the Six Companies on to Portland, and finally in her late teens to the small mining ... read more

August 4, 2017 Weather: 105 and sunny Hours Driving: 6 hours 39 minutes States Drive Thru: Oregon and Idaho Miles: 431 Restaurants: Boise Fry Co. Movies: Games: Books: Dog On It (Biddy), Dunkirk (Matt), Tuesdays At Morries (audio-everyone) Hotel: Springfield Marriott Today, we ate breakfast, found a post office to send postcards to themselves, and set off for Boise Idaho. Uneventful drive. It took us almost 7 hours. We listened to Tuesdays at Morries. Everyone seems to like it. We arrived a Springfield Inn Marriott to 105 degrees and it felt like it. Boise is a really nice, clean, updated city. We really like it. Lots of restaurants and nice places to be outside. We are impressed. The kids swam a bit, then we headed out to dinner to a place recommended by my sister-in- law ... read more

Heart of the Monster A flesh eating monster once lived along the Salmon River in Idaho. The monster devoured all of the animals and people until only Coyote and Fox were left to be eaten. Coyote had been trying to bring Salmon into the river for the people to eat, but decided to quit when there were no more hungry people around. Coyote made up a pack of things to start a fire and some knives and tricked Monster into eating him. He then located Monster’s heart and built a fire and begun to cut out the heart. Soon Monster began to weaken and feel sick. Those animals and people who had been devoured, but who had not yet died were able to follow the smoke and find egress through Monster’s mouth, nose eyes, ears and ... read more

CANFIELD Underway at 0645 am. The impoverished little town of Caliente has a restaurant called the Branding Iron but it only can afford to open three days a week and Tuesday is not one of them. I missed my breakfast, got no coffee and left town a bit surly. There is another little eating place called the Silver Café up in Pioche. It is open six days a week, but Tuesday is not one of them. The reason for choosing this route up Hwy 93 was to visit the little community of Eagle Valley. My other great-great grampa, Henry K. Chamberlain, was a pioneer settler there and I was hoping to find a friendly Mormon to show me around the old fort, and maybe see where Henry raised his family. They were all peacefully slumbering though, ... read more

Mileage – 214.5 We started the day with a cooked to order breakfast then we headed out. Our first stop was the overlook we missed last night. In the process of getting there, we missed seeing that there was another “sister” overlook on the other side of the highway and we drove right by. We didn’t realize it until we walked under the bridge and saw that we could go up the other side. Oh well. We did get some pretty pictures from the area under the bridge of the gorge and the waterfalls. Well, the waterfall we first saw yesterday was the one we could see from the bridge… We then climbed up the stairs and walked halfway across the bridge to take pictures. The bridge vibrated each time a big truck came over. There ... read more

Mileage 301.2 We got up and ate our breakfast then came back to the room to book hotels for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and finish up the blog. Then we were off. We had googled to try to find a welcome center for Idaho since we were just over the border and needed maps (can’t use google maps if you don’t have internet and you don’t have your destination in before you lose internet). Google last night didn’t find anything. Of course we left the hotel, drove maybe 2-3 miles and there it was. Oh, well, we bought maps last night. The speed limit on I 84 is 80 mph. Cool. We passed a truck pulling a triple trailer. That was a first for me. Further down the road we decided to take a detour and ... read more

Today was one of the longest drives we will have on the trip. Over 500 miles and almost 8 hours is enough to wear on anybody's nerves, but add a 4 and 5 year old into the mix and well..... things escalate. We have been limiting their exposure recently to ipads and TV which overall has been a very positive experience, but four hours into our eight hour odyssey and I caved. Out came the laptop, Bluetooth audio to the car speakers, fade them to rear, add a couple of towels on the back windows and boom! We were in movie theatre mode. Although Antonio initially resisted the plan, he quickly agreed that listening to the soundtrack of Angry Birds was a small price to pay for the relative peace that ensued. It seems that you ... read more

Monday, July 3, 2017 found me heading north to White Bird ID to ride the jet boat through Hells Canyon in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. My journey began northbound on ID 55, the Payette River Scenic Byway – a road I had traversed in a southerly direction from Banks ID on Wednesday of the previous week and had intentionally omitted from my list of scenic drive options during my week in Boise ID. After the short drive to Banks, everything was “sight unseen.” For almost the entire drive on ID 55, I was accompanied by some variation of the (adjective) Salmon River, adjectives being Big, Little, Middle, South, etc. There were two long sloping up grades as well as the requisite accompanying down grades. The first three-quarters of the drive was saturated with both ... read more

The road west on US 20 from Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco ID to Mountain Home ID is an excellent highway over mostly flat terrain interspersed with some rolling hills. From Mountain Home, I took I-84 west to Boise Riverside RV Park in the Boise ID suburb of Garden City ID. The RV park has small spaces and narrow roads, but an assistant accompanied me to the site and helped me position my rig in the back-in site. I’m pretty happy with the new diesel – the on-board computer showed 12.0 miles per gallon from Arco to Garden City as I was PULLING the Bighorn. That’s about 50 percent better than my old truck while pulling the Pilgrim. Pretty much as soon as I had gotten the rig settled in, my neighbor, Eric, ... read more

In my final blog of last year – New Places, New Friends, New Truck, New Home – I outlined the whys and wherefores of my delayed departure for the first leg of Chapter 2017 of The Great Adventure. During the final 2-3 weeks I spent in Apache Junction AZ, the temperatures were in the 100s and 110s every day, frequently teasing the 120-degree mark. The forecast for the first couple of days following my departure predicted the temperatures would break the all-time Phoenix record of 122. Before I set out for Las Vegas NV, well after my planned departure date, my cell phone had what I thought was a terminal melt down. A little cooling time in the cabin of my new (to me) tow vehicle cured the phone’s issues. The trip to Roadrunner RV Park ... read more
