So we made it to Boise (pronounced BOY-see by the locals) and had a really good time. Truly, this was one of the best American cities I’ve ever visited. They are apparently known for being the “most livable” city in America. If there was an impetus for this entire trip, then I suppose it would be the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl that we attended on Friday. My alma mater, Western Michigan, was playing against BYU in this game. When I first saw that this was our bowl destination, I was not particularly thrilled. Living in Georgia, I have really no easy/inexpensive way to get to Boise, Idaho. But when I decided to make it a bigger trip than just a bowl game, and to invite someone along for the ride, then attending the game became much ... read more

We woke up for our last day in Moscow and wanted to make the most of it. The last time we visited was 4 years ago when Nathan was only 6 months old, and we didn't know the next time we would be able to travel there again. Thankfully, Chet, Kat, and Owen still travel often to their house in Somis or meet up at Steve's parent's house and we get to hang out at those places. We had breakfast and Owen went to school. Cheston gave us a great idea to go see the Grizzly Bears at Washinton State University in Pullman, so while he worked Steve, Tory, Kat, Rosie and Nathan drove there. It was quite spectacular to see 4 bears out of their cages in the grassy area where 2 of them were ... read more

Today started really early with the kids up not long after 6. We suspect it was from their anticipation of going to the Palouse Ice Rink to try some ice skating and then watch Uncle Cheston's adult league hockey game. We first had some donuts for breakfast and headed to church at Christ Church lead by Pastor Douglas Wilson. The service went as well as can be expected for two kids who aren't used to having to stay in the service with us. We enjoyed the liturgy of a more formal church. We stopped by the Walmart again and got some Starbucks to bring back to the house as a treat. We all had lunch and hung around the house for a bit before Rosie went down for a nap. Tory took time to rest too ... read more

A fun day and night all around Moscow! It started with a trip down the street to the park to watch Owen's rugby game. It was funny to see people in tank tops in what we feel like is cold morning weather. There was a parade downtown for the Idaho University homecoming that we went to next. It was really fun to see all the local teams, bands, and several farm equipment right in front of us marching by. The parade also threw out candy that the kids loved, and Nathan and Rosie enjoyed the views up on Steve and Cheston's shoulders for a while, and right in the front of the parade. It ended with 5 firetrucks and a street sweeper, much to the kids delight. We walked around after and stopped at a pizza ... read more

We woke up to a nice morning with coffee and breakfast while the kids enjoyed time together. Nathan went into read books with Owen in bed early in the morning and the rumor is they talked early in the mornings before everyone was awake most of the days. Kat, Tory, Steve, and the kids walked down to East City Park while Cheston worked. The park had great playground equipment and Steve and Owen played football on the grass punting the ball around to each other. The fall foliage was incredible, like nothing we ever see in California and gave us some gorgeous photos. Back at the house, Nathan and Owen played with hot wheels tracks and hockey in the basement whenever there was downtime. Rosie and Steve napped while the Kat and Tory went out for ... read more

After a so-so breakfast at the Salmon Lodge this morning, we got an early start on our ride. Which brings up a bit of confusion on our part, and some trivia as well. Three days ago we crossed into the Pacific Time Zone, but now we seem to be in the Mountain Time Zone again. For some reason that I cannot comprehend, the Northern part of Idaho is Pacific Time Zone and the Southern Part is Mountain. We have been riding mostly south so we crossed back into Mountain Time. However, I personally am staying in Pacific Time. Tomorrow’s ride into Oregon will put us back in PST anyway. Back to today. We started climbing again right away and continued uphill for 25 straight miles. That made for a very slow MPH average and it set ... read more

Bruce and I were on our bikes about seven this morning after a quick hotel breakfast. We started climbing right away. After only 10 minutes out of Grangeville, we turned off of Highway 95 onto Old White Bird Hill Road. It was a narrow road that switchbacked through the tall pines for about eleven miles. A beautiful quiet road. At one point, we startled a cow that had somehow gotten through the fence onto our road. Our bikes must have really scared her, because she frantically ran up the hill ahead of us trying desperately to get back on the other side of the fence. Finally, after about a quarter of a mile, she charged through the barbed wire breaking the fence! We cheered her success. Soon we saw her back with her friends. Upon reaching ... read more

This has been a spectacularly beautiful three days, and I really wanted to share it! However, we were in a big valley along the Lochsa River and there was no cell coverage or WiFi. I will try to hit the three day high points in this blog. On Aug 1, Bruce and I left Missoula early and headed south toward Lolo. The first 10 miles was retracing my earlier route into Missoula. We used the same bike path to Lolo, and then turned west on Hwy 14 toward Lolo Pass. About 25 miles into the ride, and eight miles before the top of the pass, we stopped at Lolo Hot Springs for a dip in the 104 degree water and a quick bite to eat. It was a little tough to get back on the bikes ... read more

Day 18 Today's route is self plotted in order to get us to Preston for a night, with the plan to cross the Rockies the next morning to join up with the Utah BDR in Garden City at Bear Lake. Reaching our turnoff for our first plotted tracks, we noticed a few no trespass signs. Unsure whether the signs applied to the land either side of the tracks or included the tracks, we opted for discretion and stayed on the road. As all the flat scrubby land from Arco southwards seems to be owned by the Atomic Energy Commission we figured the penalty for trespass could be vaporization.! Turning off onto wide flat gravel roads we passed through Atomic City which was 3 or 4 dilapidated buildings - (perhaps this had been a test site!) we ... read more
