THE BASICS We dawdled along through Wyoming, from Flaming Gorge to Rock Springs to Lander to Dubois to Grand Teton NP. There were so many smoke warnings and it was so hot that we were trying to delay our ventures farther west until some things stabilized. En route to Lander, we drove on some dusty washboard roads to South Pass City Historical District, which is a well-developed ghost town visit. Originally, it was mined for gold, then for other minerals. In Lander we had delicious hamburgers formed from local open range beef, and the next day drove to Sinks Park and National Forest to climb to the falls on the Popo Agie River. In Dubois we camped next to a river. Then on to the Tetons, which are as splendid as ever. We "dry camped" for ... read more

blog 09-06-17 Two days together I am trying to catch up so you all know where we are and that we are safe from all the fires. The decision had been made several days ago not to go to Glacier because of the fires and the very bad air quality. How can you enjoy yourself in all that smoke and that is what this trip is about, enjoying ourselves. I am sorry Ginnie has to miss Glacier this trip but it gives her a reason to come back. We spent an extra day in Gardner and caught up on laundry and we even cleaned the camper. There was so much dirt and dust inside we didn't recognize the place when we finished. The next day we went to Deer Lodge, MT and stayed at a KOA ... read more

Today was another travel day. We continued north into Idaho. We passed through Salt Lake City and we did see the Great Salt Lake as we went by. I didn't get any pictures, I was quite occupied by the heavy traffic and didn't think of it. I was also a bit hesitant to get off the expressway and try to drive a motorhome towing a car through city streets. Provo blended into Salt Lake City which blended into Ogden, making for a long stretch of busy traffic. Clearly most of Utah lives in that corridor, as the rest of the state was relatively deserted. So we didn't see the big Mormon temple. Every town of any size that we passed through had a Mormon church, but I never saw a single Methodist church or even a ... read more

Alles rood in de ... read more

CAMAS MEADOW The people thought they were safe from pursuit when they reached Montana and they could live peacefully among the Crow. Generals Sherman and Sheridan thought differently though. Indians who could defeat the army and make the army look foolish needed to be hunted down and destroyed. On August 9 the people were attacked at Big Hole by new soldiers led by John Gibbon. He was driven back to hide in some trees and put under siege until the people could break camp and escape. Still it was a costly fight for them. Many were killed or wounded. The retreat took them through Bannock where they hoped to trade for medical supplies, but the terrified miners would not come out to trade. Gibbon slunk back to Fort Shaw with his bushy tail between his legs. ... read more

We left the hotel this morning at 8:22 and 70 degrees and headed out on another scenic ride. And what a ride it was. I begin by apologizing that my camera just does not do justice to what we saw today. We, as people, see everything in a 180 degree landscape and the camera only catches a small portion of that. In addition, there was a lot of smoke in the air again today. But I will say, that the first 4-5 hours of this drive are what I would characterize as eye-popping scenery. In fact, my “driver” was reduced to a one-word vocabulary all morning…”WOW”. I heard that over and over again. Later in the day, he expanded his vocabulary to “look at this”. And I heard that one again and again. So, I hope ... read more

Today we planned for a day of sightseeing and we were not disappointed. We left the hotel at 8:22 AM and a sunny 59 degrees. The weather was perfect and made the day very enjoyable. A few notes about our hotel. It was a large, brand new La Quinta located in the Shashone Indian Reservation. And half of the people in the hotel, which was sold out, were America Indians. The reason they were here was for the Shashone-Banneck Indian Festival Pow Wow. It is a yearly event where Indians from all over the country come to have a good time and compete in games and native dancing. We were lucky to get a room last night. In addition, there were about 30 firefighters. I guess this gives credence to the fact that the smoky air ... read more

Today was another moving day. We left Winter Park at 6:55 AM and 39 chilling degrees and headed for Idaho. We wore shorts today, believe it or not, because the temperature in Pocatello, ID was going to be 81 degrees. Thanks to my seat warmer, I was kept toasty warm all morning. The first leg of our trip took us west and then north and after half an hour, we were in the Arapaho National Forest and then the Routt National Forest. This was really what you might think of, when you think forest. The road took us through narrow alleys lined with Aspen, all standing tall, side-by-side, perfectly straight, with their picturesque white bark and delicate leaves fluttering in the breeze. For 120 miles, we saw fewer than a dozen cars and it occurred to ... read more

ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS It didn’t take long for One Arm Howard to spring into the saddle and gallop off in pursuit of the hostile bands after the genuine ass-whuppin his soldiers got at White Bird and Cottonwood. The bands still hoped to work things out with One Arm so that they could live peacefully on the reservation. Toohoolhoolzoot still had some horses and cattle running loose across the Salmon River that he wanted to recover before the white men could steal them. Most of the men crossed the river with him to help with the round up. The women, children and old folks went into a camp at the mouth of Cottonwood Creek on the South Fork of the Clearwater River just south of where Stites would eventually pop up. That camp was inside the reservation ... read more

HALALAHOTSOOS AND THE SPACE ALIENS When Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery stumbled out of the wilderness in the fall of 1805 they were on mighty wobbly pins. The fellow who found them was a Nez Perce Chief named Twisted Hair. He brought those starving creatures to his camp on the Clearwater River in Idaho, and fed them up. As they rested from their privations they began to tell through sign language the story of their journey. Twisted Hair had a young son named Halalahotsoos who sat in wonderment as the story unfolded. He knew those strange creatures were not from anywhere around his country and they must have strong medicine to have made it this far. No Nez Perce had ever seen white men before. Surely they must have dropped into their midst ... read more
