Lazy Morning this morning a relaxing breakfast overlooking Waikiki Beach - hard to handle but someone has to do it. Wandered around and did some window shopping before heading to the Hard Rock Café to see the kids perform again. The just keep getting better. Restaurant not packed but those that were there really enjoyed the performance. Then it was off to the Ala Moana Shopping Centre for their final performance. This was the longest they played and probably the best they played. They generally start with the two anthems and this time we had someone near us singing our anthem. The crowd were quite interactive this time which was good. Then we wandered around the shopping centre - well part of it. It was huge and a strange setup. Some of the shops faced inside ... read more

Well today another big day but what a day. Went out to Pearl Harbor early this morning and caught the first bus across to Ford Island where the Battleship Missouri (Big Mo) is docked. As we boarded to look around we were asked did we know who sang on this ship? Answer Cher. We were advised that we were more than welcome to re-enact her song, sadly we declined saying we forgot our costume!! Wandered about the ship looking out for the kids to arrive. Finally saw them and watched them set up for their first concert. How proud were we standing watching them play the US National Anthem and seeing US citizens stand proud while the kids played. How awesome was it standing on the Deck of the USS Missouri watching them play. Felt very ... read more

This morning was spent walking about Kailua-Kona before catching our flight to Honolulu. Interesting fact the Hawaiian Ironman triathlon is run on the Big Island - in fact it starts and finishes just outside our hotel. We actually covered a lot of the bike/run course yesterday on our bus tour. Must say it would be hard going. It is due to be run in October this year and already you could see what looked like people training for the swim and bike legs. A cruise shipped came into dock this morning so we watched them bring boat after boat of people ashore either for day tours or a quite wander around the place. A very relaxed place reminded us of Key West or an older Port Douglas. We enjoyed a casual stroll around town before flying ... read more

Well about 3 days ago I got a phone call while I was on my way to a wedding..."Hi Tyler it's _____ from the RMS (Staff deployment at work) how would you like an all expense paid trip to Hawaii?" Gee thanks...Hawaii in a hurricane, well I landed late Sunday evening, stopped at the store picked up some canned goods and went to my hotel before hooking up with some local friends for dinner. (sorry no food pics I was tired) I had Chicken Katsu and BBQ Beef Plate Lunch (Is it still a plate lunch if its dinner time?) From there my brain was like I can't handle it anymore, It was 2100 Hawaiian time and Midnight Pacific time. So I went into the hotel room, left the door unlocked and sat on the balcony ... read more

The morning began well with some packing, breakfast and completion of packing before I ‘threw-a-spanner-in-the-works’ by having a severe headache which caused me to not care if the world ended. As a result, my final few hours with our most wonderful friends and hosts, Lori and Wayne, who couldn’t do enough for us, was spoilt by me. Jane held the fort. All that I had hoped to say and do did not eventuate, even at the drop-off at the airport. The headache worsened which resulted in much vomiting. Seated on the plane, which was due for take-off at 6.15pm, I took for the first time in my life a sleeping pill that Lori had given me and must have fallen asleep quickly because unbeknown to me, the plane sat on the tarmac for another one and ... read more

Blog 34 Honolulu, Hawai’i, April 28 ,2018 – Weather forecast: partly cloudy skies; humidity 85%, temperature 24°C, wind 8kts (3 Beaufort) – evening temperature 20°C, light clouds, moderate winds After five days at sea we docked in Honolulu Harbour right beside the historic landmark of the Aloha Tower. At this port of call we underwent a full inspection by the US Customs and Border Protection agents who came on board to see all the passengers and crew before we were allowed ashore. Five hundred guest have opted to leave the ship and fly home from here and five hundred are joining the ship to visit two other Hawai’ian islands before sailing on to Vancouver. So, this morning’s adventure with the inspection was a critical exercise. According to the instructions provided by the ship we had to ... read more

Hawaii is an interesting place. I’ve been to Hawaii so many times, I consider myself half local. Actually a better description might be a half tourist..... I started paying attention to odds and ends here on the island. First, the locals. There are implants who moved to Hawaii and there are true locals who grew up here. The implants are grateful about the beauty and the friendly weather year round, and takes full advantage of what Hawaii has to offer. The true locals, are “soulful”.... odd description I understand but that’s how they are. There is a deep connection with their culture, with the land and sea, and the all mighty spirit that provides them all of that. They are genuinely soulful. As a scientist I cannot fully comprehend how and who they look up to, ... read more

Undoubtably, she will ask me today, “So, how does it feel to have a 19 yr old daughter?” My response will be - “Beautiful, it feels beautiful”. She came into this world 19 yrs ago today with so much fire and spice, it seemed to set the tone for her path. I often look at Rio and have said on countless occasions, “how did I ever give birth to you!” It’s become a joke at times but the truth of the matter is - Rio has always been the person I wished I could have been growing up. Our relationship has been shaped by life circumstances and I have always been conscious of Rio’s presence. It’s hard to miss it, she’s got this forceful nature that barges right into your heart ❤️ As I think back ... read more

Today was a day that goes down in our history books. Hector and Christie picked us up at 7:30 am to go snorkeling. In our minds snorkeling is in a calm bay with bright sparkling tropical fish but boy were in for a whole other adventure! We headed out into the sea in Hector’s boat named La Carmen, after his sister. It gave me a sense of pride seeing our Captain in his element. Hector is the perfect example of someone following their dreams. We have known one another for close to 37 years so it’s really nice for me to see him here living the life. As we headed out into the ocean we passed people rowing, chartered fishing and dive boats, catamarans and even a boat named RIO in the harbor. I don’t think ... read more

The one and only time I came to Hawaii was when I was 18 yrs old. It’s kind of funny because the only picture I’ve ever framed of just myself was taken on that trip. There was something about the way the North Shore made me feel. It was beautiful, I felt a world away from my reality and everything felt, smelled and looked like paradise. As I return to the enchanted island of Oahu I am reminded of the cycle of life and how incredibly beautiful it is that we weave ourselves in and out of beauty while we are here on this earth. We grow, we evolve, we have our children and then we are given an opportunity to look into the mirror through their eyes. I fully embrace this trip with no expectations ... read more
