The Northshore on Oahu may very well be the most laid-back place in the Western world. Even though it is probably possible to do some shopping or catch a brutal party there, the reasons for going there are usually not the mentioned. The place is apparently one of the hottest places for surfing on the planet. Hence, it attracts the surfing crowd. Non-surfers go there to chill. A perfect spot to spend a day off from school once the city life and killer (oh, well...) nightlife of Honolulu gets on your nerves. A friendly game of boule, a case of beer, followed by grilling hot dogs over the open fire, joined by a Canadian escapee. All this in the setting of sunset over the fabulous Sunset Beach; way up there of beautiful beaches of the world. ... read more

It's not any bus. It's The Bus. The name of the public transport system on Oahu. The monthly bus pass takes you anywhere on the island. Problem is, it takes everyone else the same places. In the promised land of the automobile, Hawaii, or more specifically Oahu, is one of the few places where public transport is more favorable than driving your own car. From students to families, from lawyers to homeless; all take The Bus. The man sitting next to me probably belongs to the latter category. He looks at me with skepticism. "You have mean eyes" he tells me. What would be an appropriate answer to a wino commenting on your eyes? A "well, ok, sorry" have to do. If my mean eyes deter people from giving me hassle, that's something I can live ... read more

It's like sticking your head into an aquarium, and watch the act. Hanauma Bay has the perfect features for tourists. Rather small bay, shallow, with a reef separating the ocean from the lagoon. Hundreds of snorkeling tourists every day. The underwater creatures almost seem to have rehearsed their moves in order to please the humans. Colorful fishies, random sea critters, the occasional turtle, even a reef shark every now and then. The bay is closed on Tuesdays though. Wonder why...Underwater block party? ... read more

We had planned to celebrate our 25th anniversary in Hawaii, and coincidentally I had a business trip there in August. So we decided to combine the trips. 21 August 1997 Thursday. We departed Dulles Airport on an early flight and after changing planes in St Louis and San Francisco arrived in Honolulu at 3:30 pm. We rented a car and drove to our suite hotel off of Waikiki Beach. That evening we walked to the beach and along Kalakaua Ave to the International Marketplace where we ate supper. We also checked out the hotels and malls along Kalakaua Ave. 22 August 1997 Friday. Early in the morning we drove the Likiliki Highway to Kailua Beach Park on the east side of the island, arriving in time for sunrise. We spent the morning swimming there and the ... read more

The 5 February 1990 was a very strange and unique day for us. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to live it twice. We left Auckland on the evening of Monday 5 February and we arrived in Honolulu in the morning of Monday 5 February. The international date line meant that we jumped back to the beginning of the previous day and all those hours we lost each time we travelled east had been given back to us in one go. Confused, well so were we. We were not exactly welcomed to America with open arms. There were an horrendous number of questions, including "Are you a member of any subversive or communist organisations?" We were tempted to say "Nyet Comrade", but customs officials don't like smart-arses and would probably have bought us down ... read more
