Fiji was my dream location; the paradise I used to imagine being in when I needed extra motivation to get me through a rough day at the office.. And so I was quite excited as we boarded the Fiji Airways flight at Brisbane.. Senan was also very excited, as we were going 'in a BROWN plane Mammy' (just goes to show that somewhere along the line adulthood increases our threshold for what gets us excited!) The flight from Brisbane to Fiji was uneventful. Three and a half hours feels a bit like a hop, skip and a jump in comparison to some other routes we've done. Senan is so enamoured with flying now that he is the model passenger. He has the routine down pat: 'passports and suitcase to the man, passports to the lady, other ... read more

Hurricane preparation announcements have been broadcast on the radio ads frequently reminding all on the Hawaiian Islands that hurricane season is looming. Here on Oahu the weather has been hot, humid and stormy this week. Plenty of rain, flash floods, thunder and lightning. Today I was in Manoa buying some fresh fruit and vegetables from the Thursday farmers market held in front of the post office. I also ducked in to the post office to mail out a birthday gift to my daughter in Alaska. Next stop was Safeway for a few essentials. The talk of the town was humidity. This evening as I am checking my weather app I see that as of 8:25 pm it is currently 86 degrees with 85% humidity. That is a pretty high number for many to continue to work ... read more

Aloha from Oahu Hawaii. Our ship arrived in Honolulu about 7:00 this morning. David was up earlier than that to prepare for his excursion this morning. So he was dressed and fed by the time we arrived in port. Unfortunately it still was not light enough to get a good view of Waikiki or Diamondhead while we were sailing into port. But David was down in the Atrium when they approved everyone to depart the ship. His excursion was supposed to meet at 7:20 inside the cruise terminal and he got on the first bus to leave. Today’s excursion was to the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. The most well know item is the Arizona Memorial, but it includes a lot more. We only went to two places but spend half a ... read more

You’d think I’d be used to queuing up through Immigration by now. But there’s queues, and then there’s QUEUES and Hawaii wins the medal for having the longest. I guess being on a plane that was several hours late arriving and coinciding with the arrival of three other planes stuffed to the gills with passengers seeking entry to a small island archipelago didn’t help. Add to that arriving in the middle of a government shut-down with many security staff effectively working unpaid and you had a perfect recipe for chaos. Which is what we got ... The Immigration Hall could barely contain the volume of passengers. The barriers snaked up and down and left to right, filtering us through to a central area with automated fingerprint scanners and cameras. Slowly, slowly we crept along and, just ... read more

We used the HOHO trolleys to get us out and about in Hawaii. So many Japanese visitors came to the island that they were provided with dedicated trolleys in their own language so we had to ensure we got the right one! The Japanese may not have won the island during the war but they seem to have occupied it by stealth now, as there were very many of them on the island. Again, our online voucher had to be exchanged for proper tickets but it was a very pleasant and relatively short walk to T-Galleria, an upmarket shopping mall, where we were able to do this. One counter assistant was trying very hard to help a gentleman with limited English and a rather loud Hawaiian shirt who was clearly entering into the holiday spirit. Several ... read more

Dateline: Monday, October 30, 2018, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Diamond Head, Honolulu Aloha… Leisurely day today as we wait for everyone to get off on their tours before heading off the ship. It’s overcast and 78 degrees but the skies show promise of sun. We have decided to take a walk to the closest Hop On Hop Off stop which is about a mile away from the ship. Each time we have come to Oahu we have headed anywhere but Honolulu …today we are staying in the city and taking in the sights. Best way to get around to all the places we want to see is the ever-popular Hop On Hop Off bus. We walk out of the dock area and turn left along busy Ala Moana Blvd. After a few blocks we turn right on ... read more

Nous visitons ensuite le site qui est beaucoup plus petit qu'on se l'imaginait. Nous rentrons à Honolulu l'après-midi et retournons au Market Place le soir.... read more
