11th June '12 Oahu, Hawaii After no sleep we arrived totally shattered at a virtually deserted Honolulu Airport. We got our bags, cleared customs and immigration with no problems and found the bus stop and were soon on our way to Waikiki Beach. Despite the tiredness we were both really excited!! We drove through the modern high rise city of Honolulu and into the modern high rise hotels which fill Waikiki but the sea was a beautiful blue! We had our noses pressed to the windows and our mouths gaping as we passed millions of restaurants selling all manner of tempting food!! We got off the bus and after a short walk in the wrong direction found our road – right where we got off!! Ah well we were knackered. Much to my astonishment our hotel ... read more

Hey everyone! This blog is going to be super short... I'm using Katie's laptop and internet here is ridiculously expensive! I'm having a brilliant time in Hawaii I'm definitely overusing the word 'awesome' to describe it, my mum can confirm this. So far I've had a surfing lesson, a ukulele lesson and been to the 'Wet n' Wild' waterpark... Katie and I have met some interesting people... she speaks fluent Japanese which is ideal in Hawaii as there's a ton of Japanese tourists here. We've been on a pub crawl and met some US Marines who are stationed here... one of them taught her to swing dance... but I'm already a pro after my lesson in Australia, obviously! The weather is perfect, loving every second of it! Oh and there's so much amazing food here, just ... read more

After travelling back in time (leaving at 1pm and arriving at 6am the same day) we landed in the land of opportunity at LAX...knackered! We arrived at our hostel at 7am only to be told we couldn't check in until 2 30pm...great! So off we went for a very long walk around LA. We stumbled across an amazing outdoor shopping complex where we had lunch and enjoyed the sunshine...this was the life! After an early night (which wasn't as early as we hoped due to a CSI marathon being on TV) we were up bright and early for the LA city tour...this took us to all the famous sites you associate with LA - the Hollywood sign, celebrity houses (beckhams, elvis presleys, Michael Jackson) even to a house Bernie Ecclestone bought for $85 million, containing 123 ... read more

Our last stop on the way home, three nights in Waikiki, Honolulu. Ron had suggested staying at the Moana Surfrider as it was a beautiful historic hotel located right on the beach at Waikiki. Established in 1901 the hotel is often referred to as the "First Lady of Waikiki". We were pleased we had booked the Ocean View rooms as not only could we see and hear the surf from our room we also had a fantastic view of Diamond Head. We enjoyed walking along the beach to have a drink or meal at one of the other hotels close by. We had cocktails at the Pink Royal Hawaiian and dinner at the Halekulani both famous for their sunset views but unfortunately at this time of year the sunset is just out of view. Luckily we ... read more

Today was a hike at Diamond Headwith Judy. Diamond Head is a unique State Park in that it was formed from an exploding volcano (the Ko'olau) many many years ago. It is very steep and uneven trail. The last part of the trail is cement. I will not even disclosed the actual distance to the top because of the steepness. I will encourage you to take your time, bring water, and wear shoes that are not flipflops or high heels. And yes, there were people that wore flipflops or high heels and I was not one of them. :-) I like how they describe the tunnel as small (it is) and lighted (it barely is). If you are claustrophobic, I probably would not recommend the tunnel part. Towards the top, the have introduced the use of ... read more

Today we went down to Hanauma Bay. Which is probably one of the best spots to snorkel. I have "snorkeled" before but the difference between the fresh waters of Minnesota and well the Pacific ocean in Hawaii is different by 180!! Unfortunately the underwater camera was not functioning properly. I did, however, see a lot of difference species of fish, sponges, and a sea turtle. Before entering the beach, you have to view a movie to protect the wild life. Considering how many people access this area for snorkeling, I am impressed that many people obey the rules of the water. According to the website for url=http://hbep.seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu/sites/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu/files/hbep/community_outreach/hbep_fish_id_card.pdfHanauma Bay , some of the fish I saw were...Threadfin Butterflyfish, Milletseed Butterflyfish, Forcepsfish, Yellowfin Surgeonfish, Stocky Hawkfish, Reef Tri... read more

Today was going to be our first day in Hawaii, we were looking forward to getting out of the hotel and exploring. We got up and I took a few pictures of the marina and ocean from our room. Breakfast We decided to have breakfast at our hotel today, it was a buffet breakfast. Now when I see buffet, I eat like there’s no tomorrow. They had an American section and a Japanese section; I stuck to mainly the American section as the Japanese section was mainly seafood. I must have got up seven times to get food. With drinks (included in buffet prices here, NOT like England), they had fresh guava juice which looked interesting so we tried it, it didn’t taste as sweet as the Rubicon juice we expected but it was nice. The ... read more

I woke up to an odd e-mail from Alaska Airlines, our flight was leaving 20 minutes EARLY due to high winds in the Pacific. A later message said it was indeed leaving on time at 10:20am, but would make a stop in Oakland for refueling. WHA????? Aparently a strong storm was brewing and we would have to go around it, but the plane didn't have enough fuel to make the longer trip and we would have to refuel. When we boarded the plane we were given a $100 coupon for a future trip due to the delay in arrival. I though that was a pretty great way to start a trip. Then after 9 hours in the airplane seat, and my butt was sore, I realized what the coupon was all about. Anyway, we had carried ... read more
