Day 14 Relaxed day today. Circle Island bus trip took all day. Nice Japanese seafood buffet finished off the night nicely. Island was partly interesting as we got across to the windward side (read rainy) where they have more rain and as a result, it is much greener. Fully fledged rainforest jungle over there and it was quite nice. Would have been good to do some hiking but that was not our situation. We are really getting into the swing of things now – and we leave tomorrow morning …….. Oh well. Highlight of the day was Chris helping a lady with directions to find the bus. Nice touch. She even got it right. For the surfers among us, we swung by Sunset Beach, Bonzai Pipeline and Waiamea Bay. Couldn’t stop there as traffic was jammed ... read more

Day 13 Holiday is rapidly coming to a close and we are just starting to get into holiday mode. Today saw a hot and sweaty trek up Diamond Head (really a crater formed 300,000 years ago (or so…..) but tough enough for two ageing Aussies (and a few others I suspect judging by expressions). Anyway, well worth the 360 deg views from the top. We got to the trail head by public bus – which was late and overcrowded as it comes to pass that this particular route only has an hourly service. Coming home we decided not to wait and walked the 4-5 kms back to the hotel. Lunch then Chris did a bit of snorkelling (I chickened out as I didn’t want to infect my forehead with Monday’s op coming up). Tonight we booked ... read more

Touristy day today. Caught the local bus into Honolulu and did the walk around of the historic buildings. Not a bad day out! Old church made out of rocks carved from coral stone was excellent. Included a wedding to boot. Monday must be a good day fro weddings as there was one in the protestant cathedral as well! The Catholics for their part just had their 12 o’clock mass. We stayed a bit but didn’t take photos as that might not have been cool! In all the civic centre of Honolulu is well preserved – with due respect to the various Kings and Queens that are still well thought of. We then ventured on to the Chinatown and wandered thru the markets and the restaurant district (trying to identify another place to eat tonight or later) ... read more

Seven nights on Waikiki beach was the ideal way to wind down our five week holiday. There is always plenty going on at Waikiki and we loved every minute of our time here. Our first day we decided to go check out a Luau. We went to Germaine's Luau, which is on the west coast of Oahu at an idyllic beach location. The weather, as it was every day we were in Oahu, was just perfect! It is about an hour drive out to the Luau, and our tour guide Matt was incredibly funny trying to get everyone in the mood to party. However, he wasn't having much luck because our bus seemed to be full of grumpy old Americans who for some reason were all a bit miserable. One guy even put his fingers in ... read more

Apologies for not blogging yesteday, but we were exhausted after a long day. To start we headed up island towards the NorthShore. We drove the H3 highway which took us through the middle of the island. This highway is surrounded by a rainforest, tall trees and a one kilometer tunnel through a mountain. I felt as if I was on the site of Jurrasic Park, which they filmed on the Big Island. This was a beautiful drive that I would recommend to anyone, it is slow, 45 mph and up and down hills, but well worth the time. Once we got back on the 63 we went to Teds Bakery which is in Sunset Beach. The pineapple upside down macademia nut cake was enough to make me forget where we were going. Brian had a a ... read more

Day 2 of the Freedom Tour as we are now calling it. This is a vacation where you can forget all of the problems you have at home for a short while, in essence have freedom from them. Hawaii is a place you can let yourself go, enjoy the sun, sand, mountains, fresh air and relax. Today we were up early, still working on Ontario time, which by the way is six hours difference from Hawaii. We rented a car and headed up island. Our first stop was Diamond Head, but the parking lot was full, we did manage to get some photos but decided to head out and see what we could find. We stopped at a light house to take some photos and watch the surfers. It is amazing to me that someone could ... read more

We arrived in Honolulu at 8:10 and it took us an hour to get through airport security, collect our luggage and out. Off we went in search of a taxi - most people seemed to be taking the shuttle so there wasn't a huge queue at the taxi rank. Our taxi was a black stretch limo so we got to ride to Waikiki in celebrity comfort - same price as normal taxi too. Luckily we we able to check into our hotel early so we got cleaned up and changed and then headed to the shopping centre next door to catch one of the numerous trolley buses that drive around Oahu. We opted for an all day hop on hop off pass and went to see Waikiki CBD and the famous Waikiki Beach. It was just ... read more
