(Writing this hung over listening to Bec’s dirty mid-90s Christmas music mix). Lets go back to our time in Hawaii; sorry it hasn’t been sooner getting this first blog out. Hawaii: we arrived on the morning of the 19th; Vanessa and Claire having not slept a wink while spending the 9 hour flight watching Bec blissfully sleep lying down across two seats. We hated her on that flight. Due to the fact that we got in so early, we had a whole day at our disposal. After dropping off our bags at our luxury Hawaiian hotel (who needs the Outrigger and Sheraton when you have the Castle Hokele Suites with its tastefully stained mattresses and great views into a local apartment?), we headed to Victoria’s Secret for new swimmers and then hit the beach. After sunbaking ... read more

As we were only 500 metres from the zoo it seemed a shame to miss it out. The animals appeared content and they were in pairs with large enclosures. As it was 28C outside, the African animals probably felt quite cool by comarison. The zoo is located in a large park with many plants and huge banyan trees.... read more

Whilst out exploring (read as shopping) we had just stopped for a coffee break and were perfectly placed to see a brass band setting up. Not knowing what was ocurring we decided to wait around. After half and hour the band master opened the performance and we were priveledged with a 1 hour performance by the Royal Hawaii Band who apparently are the only state sponsored band in the US. The performance included local music and of course a montage of carols and the musicians and singers were fabulous. Right place, right time.... read more

We became younger today as we crossed the international date line on route to Hawaii. Whilst we may have gained a day, we lost an evenings sleep, since with a 01.00hrs departure from Fiji it was impossible to sleep on the plane. People coughing, sneezing incessantly and babies wailing would have posssible to cope with ordinarily but my noise reducing headphones had packed up (grumpy old man!). A small confession for family back home. We said this year that because of the trip, Christmas was cancelled for us. Well actually we landed on Christmas Island on route to Hawaii so I supose Christmas happened early for us. In fairness we were turfed off the plane with our hand luggage to wait on the tarmac for 1 hour at 06.30 whilst the aircraft was refuelled. Seen from ... read more

Aloha! Monday 8th October – Waikiki I was back on my own again! But I was going to be arriving home on Friday!!! Only a few people knew (sooooooo sorry for lying J) so it’d be a surprise! I enjoyed my free breakfast muffins and packed up my stuff as was moving room; I should have been moving to a different hostel because it was cheaper, but I had a big Uni exam the Monday after I got back and needed to focus. I headed to the beach for the day, it was so hot I had to take the odd break in the shade (hard to believe when I’m writing this at 7.30am in England and it’s – something in November!). I read Bridget Jones, had never read it before, think the film is better ... read more

Aloha! Thursday 4th October – Northshore, Oahu to Waikiki We drove back into Waikiki after our trip around the island… I think we came off the Freeway a bit early as it was touch and go for a minute if we’d find our way! But we appeared on Jonny’s Waikiki map and he directed us towards Diamond Head… a crater just outside of Waikiki. I was quite impressed with myself… driving along the main avenue alongside Waikiki beach. I have to note something about the Hawaiian flag (usually found alongside the USA flag)… it has the Union Jack on it. I asked someone why and it was because Hawaii used to be under British rule… I never knew that so it was interesting and also interesting that they’ve kept the Union Jack on the flag… Canada ... read more

Aloha! Tuesday 25th September (my second of 2012!) – Honolulu and Waikiki We had a bumpy landing at Honolulu but at least we’d made it from Fiji! The USA immigration line up was REALLY slow but once at the counter I went through really quickly and didn’t need to do all the usual finger prints jazz, I wonder if it’s because they have recent information for me, they only asked a few nice questions. Our bags were already off the carousel by the time we got to baggage claim. I headed outside and found the Roberts Hawaii shuttle I’d booked and we had a nice ride into Waikiki (saw a mixer truck as soon as we left the airport…already have a USA mixer photo though). The driver pointed out interesting places and told us a little ... read more

26th – 30th June ’12 Leaving The Big Island and back to Oahu and Waikiki Beach, our last few days in Hawaii. Another 48 seater plane back to Honolulu Airport and then another interminable bus journey back to Waikiki! This time we are staying at The Royal Grove, one of the original 1950’s hotels, which hasn’t had anything done to it since then I reckon! It’s a great location, only one block from the beach and close to all the shops and restaurants and for Waikiki are bargin price – which is why we are staying there rather than the lovely Aloha Surf! I sometimes think it’s almost better never to have a taste of luxury, as that way you don’t know what you’re missing. Anyway our little pink hotel is surrounded by huge modern skyscrapers ... read more

The day before our vacation, we did many things, such as: taking money out, cleaning the house, taking Mason to my parents’ house. I had to go back and forth my parents’ house a countless amount of times. Then later on that night, Golda said that our flight was at 6pm and not 7am as she previously stated; I was relieved since I was very tired that night. When we arrived in Hawaii, I felt pretty warm as expected. But the heat did not compare to the heat of Japan, Taiwan or Philippines in the summer months. When we got to the Budget rental lot, the clerk upgraded our car for us because it was our honeymoon. He gave us a Jeep Wrangler (I always wanted to test drive one of those). This machine is an ... read more
