Hawaii is gorgeous. The landscape reminds me of some place Indiana Jones would travel to. The beaches here are gorgeous, it is so clean and the water is a beautiful blue that does not exist on the east coast. The flight was long--9 hours from Chicago's airport. It was nice though, I got to see some bad movies that I would never see in the theater. That was nice. This is my blog everyone! I will update it every so often with stories and pictures of my journey. For those who do not know where I am going, I am in Hawaii and I go to Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, and then Italy. This is the best way to keep in touch with me. For anyone who wants to e-mail me directly, send them to ... read more

well, its now my final day in hawaii and really dont want to leave, L.A doesnt seem too appealing after being here but all good things must come to an end (or so they say) ive had such a great time here, havent really got much done but i guess thats what hawaii's all about. its been great just chilling out and meeting some fantastic people. since my last entry (which i know was quite a while ago, so much for keeping this updated!) ive climbed up a big hill and been to hanamau bay a couple more times which was sweet, swam about with some turtles some more, took some underwater pictures which really didnt do it justice.also took some surf lessons off waikiki beach (just call me brian wilson) which is soooo much ... read more

cant bloody believe it, first full day here and i fall asleep on the beach with my sun bins on and now have stupid panda eyes, not a great start. anyway arrived in honolulu yesterday absolutely shattered following early morning flight from calgary to denver (things to do in denver when you're dead=nothing, things to do in denver when you're alive=nothing! although i did buy a watch which was the only point of interest) and then here. you cant help loving hawaii as soon as you get off the plane, tropical air, awesome sunshiiiine, and even the bus journey through the shittier part of honolulu was alright. im staying at the waikiki beachside hostel and although its actually a block (yes a whole block!) from the beach its a pretty sweet setup, not just as im ... read more

After living out of suitcases since since 3 January, we've finally reached the last day of our holiday. I know it's not the longest 'career break' ever, but any longer and CJ is going to start thinking this is the way life is meant to be. A couple of weeks ago, he started talking a lot about having his own bedroom with all his toys in a toybox, bless him. He was very good in San Francisco when we had to throw away a lot of the cheap toys we'd accumulated on our journey, or maybe he didn't pay attention and he'll start asking about them soon. Anyhoo, we flew to Waikiki with very heavy bags necessitating an excess baggage charge. Great. Can't complain though, because we were upgraded to better seats, probably due to ... read more

If you’ve been following my journal for the past 6 months, you’d probably agree that the island of Oahu has earned the title of the above. From the American Indian Pow-Wow in the Autumn, the multiple Christmas shows, the nightly Hula and Polynesian performances nightly in Waikiki, the Chinese New Year’s 3 week celebration, the Mardi Gras and just this past weekend, a 2 day Honolulu 13th Annual Festival culminating with a 3 hour Parade through Waikiki. This Festival is sponsored by the Honolulu Festival Foundation of Japan, “with the purpose of promoting friendship between Japan and Hawaii, and it has now grown into a cultural exchange program among all the various regions of the Pacific Basin”. Some of the highlights this year were numerous Hula Groups from Japan, local entertainers and cultural groups, traditional Japanese ... read more

Las Vegas to Hawaii, our third stop on this RtheW trip of a lifetime and the first location not previously visited. From now on for us it is all ‘new ground’… Yet another early call for a flight takeoff at 9:30 am on a bright spring day with a distinct chill in the air. Again no hotel breakfast but muffins and black ‘cawfee’ in the departure lounge. Good ‘sideways’ view of the Strip from the tarmac but no opportunity to attempt a ‘panoramic’ shot. On board settle down for the eight hour flight to Honolulu. As a toddler, I have listened to ‘Hawaiian style’ music played on the steel guitar by my dad so we have many mental images of Waikiki and the Hawaiian scene… On arrival, a traditional greeting for everyone, a lei, beautiful ... read more

Aloha! Greetings from Waikiki. Four days of tropical island lifestyle with the unexpected twist of very cold abrupt rainshowers! Showing our true british bones, we outstayed nearly everyone on the North shore beaches who must have been allergic to rain as they all dashed immediately back into their trucks! Being budget conscious and again british, we walked almost everywhere and made the best of the $2 public bus fares instead of taking hostel shuttles or $100 taxis. Stayed on the North Shore for two nights, where Alex made the most of the surf (and walked miles barefoot to hire a board). He surfed the beach at Pipeline, I stuck to the calmer waves of Waikiki in the south today. We snorkelled with the fish in a flooded volcanic crater at Hanauma Bay, went to Pearl Harbour, ... read more

We checked out the beach at Waikiki. One of the locals informed us that the beach was so dirty because the sewerage was pumped straight out into it. The beach was alright, no waves, a bit of rubbish but absolutely littered with people. There were Japanese doing there exercisers before entering the water, there were plastic American prancing around in their miniature bathers with their leather like skin, there were the larger American who struggled to fit into their bathers and offcourse there was heaps of people attempting to surf, learning to surf or surfing on the pathetic waves. As seen by the picture there really wasn’t much surf in Waikiki. ... read more

Day two in Hawaii we went on a tour. We were only on the bus a few minutes when our tour guide informed us that her favourite topic was food, not Hawaii! She held true and talked continuously about food. She pointed out all the places to eat and great places to buy food supplies while she toured through the streets of Waikiki and Honolulu. Our first and actually only stop was the Pearl Harbour Arizona memorial. The place was packed with American tourists. We watched a short movie before going on a boat ride to the memorial boat. The boat was bombed during Japan’s attack during WWII. Unlike most of the boats this ship remains under the water and still entombs its many once sailors. The boat now has a memorial on top for ... read more
