We eventually arrived in Hawaii, rather tired but ready for our big adventure to start. We were greeted at the airport by our transfer. Everyone kept saying ‘Aloha’ to us since we weren’t accustom to it all we kept saying was ‘Mmmmm.’ ... read more

For our first day in Hawaii we walked up and down the main street in Waikiki. We had lunch at a typical American restaurant, hamburgers. They even asked ‘how you would like your hamburger cooked.’ It wasn’t long before we found our selves in a shooting gallery. We got to shoot some automatic weapons, which was pretty cool considering anybody could walk off the street and fire these guns and I (George) got to fire my all time favourite gun the Russian made AK-47 and that made my day. The glasses that we had to wear were just an added bonus. ... read more

Tourists among tourists North America » United States » Hawaii » Oahu » Waikiki By luckytravelgirlFebruary 17th 2007Kristin B.Today we went to the Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo. That took just about all day, since we had to deal with Waikiki traffic. So many cars, so little island. But it was beautiful, even when it rained!... read more

What a day! Let me just say that there is only so much island, and all of us are trying to drive it. The traffic here is horrific. So if we move here, it will definitely be many miles from Waikiki. Anyhow, we left this morning and headed for the Punchbowl, which is the National Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific. It contains the graves of thousands in the crater of an old volcano. Absolutely humbling, and I have to say the views were breathtaking. Then on to drive up Tantalus. I now know something the guide book did not tell me: Tantalus is a one person trip. Because inevitably the person who is not driving will end up nauseated clinging to the door. Quite a road. Next time, I drive. We stopped at a roadside ... read more

Hello! I know I haven't written in a very long time, but it's hard work sunbating, surfing, snorkling, shopping, party and dance, it takes up a lot of energy so you have to excuse me! You know someone has to do it, he he. Our stay in Hawaii is nearly over, but wow what a great time we have had here! Maui was beautiful, post card pretty beaches, less touristy, more relaxed and layed back( they call it the hippie Island) and much more quiet than Oahu and Waikiki. As there were no hostels in the south of Maui we had to stay in a pretty nice hotel in Kihei right on the beach for 5 days. More expensive of course, but sooo good with a bit of luxury for a change! The only way to ... read more

Finally here! The next big stop on my journey around the world. I am absolutely exhausted after some fairly heavy travelling... I had a short stay at the Waikiki Parc Hotel, the sister hotel of The Halekulani which is one of the most exclusive hotels in Waikiki. A lot of the service and comfort but at half the price... Did nothing but enjoyed the beach and the lovely warm (but not too warm) weather.

About 10 years ago, I remember reading an article mentioning that the meaning for the Town of “Waipahu” meant Water Drum and that water was sometime pour into drums to give it a desired pitch. This journal is basically about this town of about 35,000, which is not really a tourist destination. It is sometimes call “Sugar Town” as it basically was in the midst of sugar cane fields and also was the site of a fairly large sugar mill. The population is mainly inhabited by Filipinos, the latest of various immigrant groups brought into Hawaii to work the Sugar and Pineapple fields which for almost 100 years were the King industries for Hawaii. About 30 years ago, with the competion of cheaper labor in the Philippines and Central America, the sugar and pineapple industries here ... read more

After logging out of the internet in Sydney, i boarded my plane. Shock horror i had my lovely 42below vodka confinscated. "... sorry you can not take that liquid on the plane" You have to be kidding! I was quite dark and felt like hijaking the plane on that basis. But refrained... as that was about as negative as it got. I was fortunate enough to be picked up by my knowledgable, amazing, as Wendy would say "all american girl" tour guide, Sarah. Sarah and I met in Maui and she visited me in NZ and so i knew she was going to make every effort to accomodate me. I was staying in her beautiful flat, with 4 her 4 flatmates. Sarah had set up a bed in the living room (no couch, a REAL bed) ... read more

Day nine of bears in paradise, we bid adieu to one of our party who made his way home to San Francisco and the rest of us set out around the south end of the island of Oahu. We searched for the Toilet Bowl, one of the top ten things to see, but we were unsuccessful. Then off to the Blow Hole, and on around the south end. It was a very nice drive with little rain. Our final stop was a visit with King Kamehameha where we paid our respects. Then back to the hotel for a brief rest and then off shopping one final time. I take these guys to the best places. We had a very quiet evening being ignored at the World Famous Hula’s Bar and Lei stand, but it was fun ... read more
