It’s Issy’s birthday, again, as it was yesterday, or was that the day before, when it was today. This is very confusing. I woke up in a cold sweat a few night ago thinking that I’d booked our accommodation here for the wrong nights. I then remembered the thing about the dateline, which meant that we got here before we left home …. I think. My head then spun for a long time before I managed to get back to sleep again. Perhaps unsurprisingly we sleep in after a completely sleepless night on the plane the night before. I wonder why they don’t put bunk beds on planes. Monday: Haleakala!! Well, after much mulling and checking of weather forecasts, we decided to go ahead and make this the day we drive up to the 10,000’ dormant volcano. We headed out around 9 am, and stopped at our usual whale spotting place where we did see some, and Megan and Andrew got to hike a bit. We stopped at Makawao’s famous bakery just into the foothills – it’s where the Haleakala bikers pass through from their starting point at 6500’ up the mountain (no longer allowed to leave from the Park). We counted over 100 bikers descending. A really cute bohemian town with lovely shops – but no time! Amazing sunset Mauii is one of the most beautiful places I have visited so far. We stayed at the Banana Bungalow Hostel for 5 days. One of the perks staying here was that they offered free tours with different activities. One of the days we joined a tour that was supposed to take us up the Haleakala, one of the biggest crater volcanos, that is now dormant. The plan was to hike through the crater, which would have been an 8h hike. Unfortunately due to the weather conditions that day it was not possible to do the hike. What else can go wrong? I accidenally published this blog entry withut the photo captions. Sigh. The rest of the tet is the same. The saga continues… I was in considerable pain from the left hip down to my ankle. Barb and Dianne drove me to the ER at Maui Memorial Hospital where I got to hurry up and wait for someone to talk to. The triage nurse was hilarious. After asking all the important questions he turned with a serious look on his face and asked if I had considered that it might just be "old man's disease". I'm pretty sure he knew his audience and wouldn't have said that to just anyone. Well, we are actually back in Canada after two weeks on Maui. Where was the blog you say? In the excitement described herein, I managed to lose my computer charge cord and my iPad Mini isn't up to the job of blogging. So back to the beginning... In 1994, Dianne and I went to Hawaii. We had such a great time that we said we should come back "next year". Well, next year finally arrived, albeit 26 years later. Friends go to Maui every year in the January time frame so we decided to bite the bullet and join them for a couple of weeks.
