We finally had a day to sleep in and to wake up when our bodies told us that it was time to rise and shine. Outside our balcony view of the Pacific waters between Maui and Molokai the Pacific is a scant two hundred feet deep, a depth that is favorable to the humpback whale during their mating season. The waters are warm and here they have no predators. The orcas favor deeper waters, so when it is time for them to migrate back to Alaskan waters for feeding; then, they will face perils. That is one of the reasons the “escorts” who accompany a mother and calf are important. We were told that the escort is seldom the father. This morning we both were able to spot humpbacks breaching in the distance, making wide unmistakable ... read more

It seemed like a really good idea to take a bus-van tour to Hana and back several months back when we were planning our trip; but, that was before getting up extra early to NOT see the sunrise atop Haleakala. Two mornings in a row now we’ve been awakened to an alarm clock, and that’s only one of the things we don’t miss about working. Our van picked us up promptly at 6:40AM and already it was nearly full. The driver asked us how we were doing, and Sharon replied as she often does, “We’re Good… we have to be good.” Then explaining to everyone, “That’s our name!” We had to sit in the back row of this nearly full 12 passenger van, and the cheerful driver who grew up in New Zealand suggested that we ... read more

When we competed our reservation for Tuesday Evening, for dinner and a show, we don’t recall the concierge having offered any other Haleakala tours other than the bus ride up and biking down the mountain. Not quite our cup of tea. We told him that our plans including driving up Haleakala, although we might not have said that we planned to do it to see the sunrise. A new policy is now in effect for this National Park: Anybody wishing to park in the parking lot between 3AM and 7AM MUST have a reservation! Lucky us, this policy went into effect just last month. The concierge might have been distracted by my hat: Yes, Erin, the Red Hat! He kept glancing at it and I guess I didn’t quite look like someone on the Summit Team ... read more

We awoke this morning with some trepidation; because, we’d been “invited” to a “free breakfast” for guest on their first morning at the Royal Kahuna. We know what it means to be invited to a “free breakfast” at a Wyndham resort, something we do our best to avoid, if we can. They referred to this as a “free breakfast and orientation” which could mean anything. Before going down to the lobby, we spent some time on the balcony. As on cruises, in fact as we do each day, Sharon and I enjoy our Daily Sudoku Challenge. On cruise ships, they used to be pretty good about putting out two daily puzzles, and Easy and a Hard one. We use the Enjoy Sudoku app to do the daily challenge. The app is free; although, there is a ... read more

Our plan for a trouble-free shuttle to the airport paid off. We boarded three minutes early and we were on our way to the airport with one other lady bound for Canada. So many things could have gone wrong with Economy Rentals. After getting our boarding pass and luggage tags from a machine that had us weigh our own bags, we put the tags on the luggage, and then simply gave them to a guy who put them on a conveyer. There was a lady was making sure that only those with the TSA-preCheck went into that line. We got to our gate. I went and got a croissant egg sandwich at a Burger King airport vendor; and, then waited in an interminable line to get Sharon a chocolate chip muffin. When I got close enough ... read more

Actually, this was my second golf day. I shipped my clubs here via Shipsticks which may have been a mistake. I think I may have saved a few bucks by just dropping them off at UPS or FedEx to be shipped. For around $165 for the 5 day shipping option, which turns out to be a full 7 day week because 5 days are business days. Anyway, they arrived a day late. It didn't really matter, but it kind of made me mad for the money it cost. I played the Kapalua Plantation Course on Saturday. This is a PGA Tour course on which Jordan Spieth won in January. I was paired up with two guys from Kansas City. I misread the score card and thought we were playing it at about 6,100 yds. After about ... read more

I still love luaus. I know it's kind of corny and very touristy, but I always want to go to one. A few days ago, Jan and Jackie wanted to check out a couple of the local luaus. After checking out the Hyatt's location, they booked us into the Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Kaanapali Resort for Tuesday night. We had a wonderful time. The drinks and food were very good. The entertainment was outstanding. I couldn't talk Jan and Jackie into going up for the hula lesson, though. They had about five hunky Hawaiian kanes and six lovely wahines. They did traditional dances from Tahiti, Tonga, Samoa and Raratonga, telling stories of how those people came to Hawaii. It was a great show. ... read more

Today we made the drive up to the top of Haleakala. It was a perfect day for it. There weren't even the normal clouds around the mountain. As a matter of fact, it was quite warm for this elevation...59 degrees. Normally it's in the 30's or 40's. From the floor of the ocean, the total height of Haleakala is over 29,000 ft, which would make it taller than Mt. Everest. Haleakala is the dormant volcano that comprises all of the largest section of the island of Maui. It is humongous, rising to just over 10,000 ft above sea level. It's a pretty long drive up to the summit from sea level at the base, something like 38 miles. Climbing 10,000 ft from sea level requires a lot of twists and turns, but this is much easier ... read more

We went whale watching today on the Hawaiian Ocean Project boat and were very lucky. We had two whales playing going back and forth under the boat. Jan and I have done several of these whale watching cruises and I guess we've always been lucky because we've always had whales close to the boats. Today was no exception. I'll let the pictures and video tell the story. ... read more

We left our resort on Kaanapali Beach around 9:00 AM. I warned Jackie that it would end up being a 12 hour day and I was pretty darn close. Our first stop was Charley's in Paia. Paia is the town that is at the beginning of the Hana Highway. Jan and I just stopped there on probably our second drive to Hana quite a few years ago. Way back then we learned that Charley's was a favorite hangout for Willie Nelson, who has a home near there. The story goes that he comes in and plays whenever he's around. There have been many other famous musicians that have played there, too. They serve a great breakfast there and also some great Bloody Marys. You have to be fortified for the long drive ahead. It's a mere ... read more
