The most active volcano on the planet! It was quite a sight. I did not see any active lava flows close up, altough I was able to see their glow at night though. However the sights I did see were humbling, and walking along the sides of the craters was inspiring. I stayed the night at the Volcano House and had dinner at the edge of the main crater. Maapallon aktiivisin tulivuori! Vietin yön Volcano Housissa (Tulivuoritalo) ja söin päivällisen suurimman kraatterin reunalla.... read more

Hi everyone, nothing new to report. Everyone is happy and healthy, we are having fun going to a different beach everyday. Today we were at the beach by the marina. The kids had a great time playing in the trees and beach combing they found four sea turtles sunning themselves and resting. We watched a big military plane do touch and go's at the airport from our ventage point so that was entertaining. This morning we went to the Keahou Farmers market and bought tangerines, keefer limes, strawberry papayas, organic apple bananas and salad blends. The strawberries and tomatoes are busting with flavour, the kids ate a whole basket of strawberries right away. I have been making Kona coffee everyday.....Rod hates it but I love it and sit on the lanai enjoying a cup watching the ... read more

Not alot to report, we've gone on a zodiak boat tour to see the caves in the lava and see some of the lava tubes. On the trip we saw about five humpback whales and ran into a pod of probably hundreds of spotted dolphins. That was really neat to see. The were hanging out near the dep sea Marlin boats. The visibility in the water is spectacular, depths to 100 feet down. We snorkeled at the Captain Cook Monument which we hadn't done before, the coral and fish we unsurpassed. The best I've ever seen. Today we took the kids to White Sand beach, they had a ton of fun boogie boarding, the waves were deceptive and could come on pretty strong so I wouldn't let Levi get to far from shore, he wasn't happy ... read more

Hi everyone!! Today we went on a journey to the black sand beaches and Kilaheua volcano. Kilaheua is very active will many steam vents and hot molten lava lowing into the ocean. Unfortunately, the lava is about a mile long walk in the heat on a jagged lava path so I wasn't going with the kids. On the way to the volcano we stopped at a true black sand beach, it was really neat. Our drive took us to Hilo and the banyan tree park, some of the banyans are huge and are planted by people like Emellia Erheart and Cecil B Demille. then we frove on through to Waimea and back to Kona took us most of the day. I can't say enough good things about the dvd player in the van, its a long ... read more

Hi all, well we arrived safe and sound after sitting on the runway for over an hour waiting for them to get the door shut. Seemed unable to lock not good for a trans pacific flight! So finally into Kona at about 11 pm home time and I take off with a sleepy Levi to get our mini van, which means I have left Rod and the remainder of the kids to get the luggage. Amazing it goes off without a hitch, Off we go to find our house on Alii Drive........unpack......kids are hopping excited.....midnight now.......we are missing a suitcase......off I go to the airport ......everyone is gone...except a sleepy security guard and he can't understand why I would leave a bag on the carousel....you know I was too tired to explain and just walked away. ... read more

Yes, I'm still alive and I am doing fine as usually. And of course I am busy as usual. So basically I have nothing new to tell. My life is boring. All I do is running, studying and working. Ok, enough. Everybody who knows me knows that this is not completely true. I do a little more than that. Well, last weekend I was on Big Island. To run of course. We had the conference down there. A week after the earthquake (by the way the eartquake wasn't bad at all. I had a great day without electricity) we couldn't see any signs of the earthquake. the race itself was awsome- I won!!! Our team got third and Todd won as well. So it was a succesful race. After the race we went to watch the ... read more

Day 1 - Friday, The arrival After an 18 hr flight from London with a two hour break at LAX we arrived at Kona airport on the Big Island. As we came in to land all I could really see was lengths of black lava stone, it was like landing on the moon! As we came off the plane onto the tarmac the thick air wrapped around us instantly… this is always a tale tale sign that it’s holiday time. Kona airport is like nothing I have ever clapped eyes on, it’s looks like a couple of huts with the luggage carousal all out in the open by the roadside. Our bags came out a little slowly but I think this was all to prepare us for the Hawaiian way of life, take things easy. Our ... read more
