On the Big Island we hired a car and explored with heaps of driving. The island was so different to Oa’hu. It was cool, grassy with heaps of cattle ranchers. We went through small towns and eventually came to a lookout over Waipio Valley which came complete with eucalyptus trees. ... read more

Dahna: Ok, I'm going to have to condense this last leg of our Hawaii trip because we have now been in rainy Vancouver for nearly two weeks and the memory of Hawaii is fading as quickly as my tan. Sooo, here goes my attempt at something between an essay and a synopsis: With only a few days to go in Hawaii, we realised it was time to get realistic. We were not going to be able to kayak along the Kona coast, mountain bike around the whole island, hike up to Mauna Lowa and Mauna Kea summits, watch big wave surfers and/or an international surfing contest, learn how to use an outrigger canoe... etc. Everywhere you go someone has a suggestion of where else you should go or what else you should do. But with only ... read more

Dahna: A point the taxi driver failed to mention, when he was suggesting that we really needed a rental car to get about in, was that the public buses that go from most major towns/areas to most other major towns/areas are free. So, on the 27th we found ourselves sitting at the Hilo bus stop waiting to be taken up to the Volcano National park village. The bus terminal felt pretty seedy. There were quite a few anti drug and anti alcohol signs up around the place, and fairly blatant drug deals going on near the pagoda, just behind the bus shelter. I was (probably totally unnecessarily) acutely aware of our laptop, digital video camera and fat juicy wallets as I sat purposely in front of the security video camera while projecting a very relaxed expression ... read more

Dahna: Wow. We rode our bikes out to the headland near Hilo today, and walked around the wetlands and rocks. We found one amazing tide pool after another. In a little pool no bigger than five meters squared we saw more fish and coral and sea creatures than we did in the entire cove that we paid money to be shuttled to with a bunch of other suckers. ooops. Sorry, but 'tis true. Sea cucumbers, slugs, crabs, hermit crabs, anenomes, coral... all the better because there was no photo-shopped version that led us there. No film of sunscrean floating on the water... no fake fingernails. Just a couple of big waves breaking over and disturbing the calm occasionally :-)... read more

Dahna: We decided to hire bikes for a couple of days (US$20 a day) and just stay based at the hostel for a few nights. We rode five miles up a pretty steep (well steep enough) hill to Kaumana caves. Not a very long ride, especially considering Jono's brother (ode to you Martin) is currently riding around eastern Turkey to Syria and Lebanon to Iran, Central Asia and onwards to Russia. BUT it was enough to make my legs feel it after having not done much exercise since leaving home. The caves were only marked by a small road side sign and had a pretty run-down car park and toilet block. The locals obviously don't consider it a tourist attraction. The "caves" are actually massive old lava tubes formed by an 1881 lava flow from Mauna ... read more

Dahna: As we flew into Hilo and did not see any high rise buildings, we both breathed a sigh of relief. Less tourists, and lower key. We had to catch a taxi from the airport though which was a little unexpected drain on the wallet, as there were no public buses and we had a bit too much gear on us to walk comfortably. It cost nearly US$20, and it was only a 4-5km drive to the hostel we were staying at. The friendly taxi driver was about the tenth person to tell us we'd need to rent a car in order to get about on the island. He even called his "friend" while we were in the car to get a "local, not tourist" quote for a car, but even that was $25 before tax ... read more

Today we ported at Kona, which is the other side of the island we were on yesterday. It was actually the warmest day of the islands we have been to yet. Got up normal time and had our usual buffet lunch. Got off the ship and finally had a look at the shops here. Went to Wal Mart which is like a big Kmart and Coles combined. Then went to Hilo Hattie which is like where you buy all the authentic Hawaiian wear. So you wouldn’t go to Hawaii and not buy a Hawaiian shirt. So we bought one each! Then headed back to the pier which had a beach next to it, so just chilled on the beach for a bit. At 12.30 we had a raft and snorkel cruise booked. So we got on ... read more

Got off the ship at Hilo and got on our tour bus to go and see the volcano’s. Jumping on the bus felt like we were getting on the senior cits bus for the day. People needed help getting on and off. Neway we were on our way went thru downtown Hilo and to the Volcano National Park. Visited a few volcanoes which were craters. It was amazing. No lava in site but each crater was just steaming. You saw some dry lava, it was like we were on another planet. The tour guide said NASA had trained there astronauts on this surface as it resembles the moon. It was very usual. Apparently the Killawa Volcano is the 2nd most active in the world. It has been active since 1983 and when the ship leaves port ... read more

I arrived to Kona and hooked up with Ǻsa (a former colleuge from the Firm) and her boyfriend James. I tried some Kava (a local intoxicant drink) and local Hawaiian food. Also the size of the vehicles on the Big Island are beyound belief. Saavuin Konaan ja tapapasin vanhan työkaverin Ǻsan ja hänen poikaystävän Jamesin. Kokelin Kaavaa (paikallinen lievästi huumaavaa juoma) ja paikallista Hawaiilaista ruokaa. Paikallisten autojen koko oli aivan uskomatonta (se pikku vihreä auto on Ǻsan).... read more
