I had a business trip in Atlanta, and I figured "why not come in a day early and see the Georgia Aquarium". Ok, I was curious about Whale Sharks, and really wanted to get up, close, and personal with one. I checked out their website and I was hooked. I quickly added this to my bucket list, and mulled over what activities I wanted to do while at the aquarium. Too, I was curious as to what a place with over 8 million gallons of water would be like! Getting to the aquarium was easy, I took the Marta from my hotel. I had to walk about 3 blocks from the Marta station to the aquarium. The Marta was crowded since Atlanta Falcon fans were going to their football game. Lucky me, I knew the aquarium ... read more

Ok It's not an exotic vacation but I am currently in Atlanta, GA in the Decatur area to be more exact. I came to ATL to stay a week at a friend's house because afterwards, we will be going to Costa Rica where a friend of mine is getting married. Though I love Costa Rica a lot, I do have to admit that it is a very male oriented society despite all of the laws that are pro-women. For example, the groom is having his bachelor party in Costa Rica and from what I hear, he had several choices of establishment as to where he could hold his party. Us girls on the other end, only had limited amount of places where we could have our own little bash which is quite annoying.... read more

I get ready to depart for a 10 hour flight to Frankfurt today. I will spend a night there to adjust to the time zone and see the city. My friend Tim will pick me up Sept 1st. I am taking one medium suitcase and my pack. I have my EuroRail pass for Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria, which allows me 5 days of travel over the month. I have one flight from Munich to Croatia since it will be easier to fly to the Southern Dalmatian coast than taking a train all the way down and back up again to Germany. The only part I hate about international traveling is the long initial flight. 10 hours on a plane is not my favorite activity (is it anybody's?), but I look at it as a ... read more

Well, today's flight was not to be. Delta overbooked and offered $600 to fly tomorrow which was too tempting. Since I really had a rest day in Frankfurt for the most part, I will just skip the night there and just spend the day on Thursday before being picked up. The only concern I had was where to keep my luggage but I found out the Frankfurt airport will store it for 7euros for up to 24 hours, so no problem.... read more

Atlanta, Georgia 8/16/11 to 8/19/11 Throughout the 257 mile drive from Savannah to Atlanta, I was super excited to be going to a city of my heroes. My first hero is Laura, a friend of mine from high school who allowed me to stay at her home in Atlanta. Laura is a free spirit who follows her convictions and intuitions. I admire and support that so much. She is a raw foods chef who is in the process of starting her own catering truck business. She believes in the healing power of raw food and the messages delivered through angel numbers. On a silly, personal level about my history with Laura, she is the first person I ever sang to. I was always very insecure about my singing voice, but loved to sing. I sat next ... read more

This morning we got up super early to go into work with Tom at Emory hospital. There was a seminar at 7am entitled 'space medicine' which got us both excited, although it turned out it was just one of the med students reading out her Google search findings so it wasn't actually that cutting edge or new. The clinic was much more interesting though. First we saw a kidney recipient who clearly didn't have a clue but his wife was so on the ball it was scary. Interestingly she mentioned that the drug which worked best for him wouldn't be paid for by their insurance company, so they'd had to switch to another. Where is NICE when you need it??? The second patient had received both a kidney and a pancreas to treat kidney failure as ... read more

Today we decided to Be Educational, so we did a tour of famous Georgia people. Fortunately there aren't very many... In the morning we visited the King Centre, an area of town managed by the National Parks Office (so all free) which covers things related to Martin Luther King's life. My knowledge of American history is shocking so this was a good chance to swot up. He grew up in the richest black neighbourhood in the USA and we toured his birth home which is Really Very Nice. The tour guide was hilarious: imagine the complete opposite of a National Trust crusty old lady and you have him. Instead of facts, as we went around he told us embellished anecdotes of how 'Daddy King' used to like his baths, or how MLK used to pretend he ... read more

Alice's birthday! Rob cooked us grits for breakfast (yaaaay - hear the sarcasm) and we lit a birthday dragon (had a candle coming out of it's mouth - quite a good idea except it dripped everywhere). Rowan also made Alice a v cute card, although the spelling was a little erratic. We then went on a hike to Rocky Shoals. These are in a very geologically ancient area where all the stone has worn down to the granite bedrock. It creates weird rocky clearings which are a haven for a bizarre ecosystem: juniper trees, rattlesnakes and rare lichens. It was sooooo hot and there wasn't much cover so we all sweated hideous amounts and had to leave quite quickly. We then went back home to try and contact our hosts in Atlanta, because we'd messed up ... read more

From the first moment I heard about this trip, I knew that I had to go. I just could not shake the idea... You see this is my first mission trip. I'm not sure that I could have ever imagined that I would do something like this but with days away from our departure I can say I have never been more filled with anticipation. I feel honored to serve with this amazing group. My team is now like family and I am forever amazed how this very different group of people got brought together in this life. We each have such different talents, experiences and backgrounds and yet there is a common heart beat. It's a beautiful thing! Vining's Lake Church had a service a month or two ago about "Hineni" and it just confirmed ... read more

We woke up around 5 AM, Bea arrived close to 6 we loaded up and were on our way to the airport. We booked ourselves on the 7:30 morning flight to Atlanta knowing that would be plenty of time and the flights were open and it would be easy to get on. We would be in Atlanta early but it’s always better to be ahead of the rush. As always, Kirsten and I have analyzed the flights trying to pick the correct time to leave to increase our chances to get first class seats using buddy passes going over to Germany. Going to Atlanta doesn’t really matter it’s a short flight, but when you’re going over the big pond First Class is nice. Well that work came to a screeching halt when we got to the ... read more
