The alarm woke me from a really deep sleep and a great dream. It took me about 15 min to realize I had to get out of bed, canoe trip today. What would we do without coffee. A quick shower, a walk for Oscar, breakfast and get stuff in my little bag for the trip. The group was assembling at the designated spot, we got our instructions and a history of the park and work the Army corp of engineers did to open the canal and make a little pond area to launch boats and fish from. The canoes were the most comfortable and stable I have ever been in. Mike and I were teamed up for our canoe, there was another couple from Wisconsin and 2 guides, a husband and wife team from Ontario who ... read more

I have to say, I was not happy with this campground. I woke this morning thinking what am I going to do here for a week with no tv and no wildlife to photograph. I was a little bummed. So I spent part of the morning on the internet (yes, I get 2 bars sometimes !!) finding things to do around here. I loaded Oscar in the car with lots of water (it’s hot) and went exploring. Top down and windows open we first went to the boat ramp to see about going on a guided canoe ride. Luckily the staff was there cleaning the canoes so they told me all about it. Yes, I could go any day and if I didn’t have someone with me they would provide another “engine”. Not a strenuous paddle ... read more

What a day it was. The sun was shinning, it was ground hog day, super bowl Sunday, and moving day. It was time to leave Myakka River and I wasn’t ready to go. I loved my campsite, loved the park and the weather was improving but …………. So I packed up most of my stuff early then took Oscar for a ride/walk to all our favorite haunts to see how different they looked in the sunshine. First we hit the lake, realized I didn’t get a picture of that, and there was a flock of white pelicans flying all around just begging me to snap their picture. Well I did, only one problem, my lens was all fogged up. I had put on the air conditioner in the camper and the camera was there, then I ... read more

Goodbye to Naples Time to leave Naples after. relaxing few days of shopping, beaching, exploring and adventure. Our favourite breakfast place closed Sundays so, in need of caffeine headed to the on-site coffee shop, found it packed with a 25 minute wait for a table so got tea and coffee to go and headed back to the room for a last sit on the balcony overlooking the boats. Checked out and hit the road for the trip back across to Miami. Had booked a hotel in Miami near the airport as we had to drop the car back tomorrow before the cruise, couldn't check in until 3pm so took a leisurely drive back on the 41 through the Everglades with a picnic lunch. Still eager to spot and photograph as many alligators and other wildlife as ... read more

Had planned another beach day but it was pretty cloudy. Breakfast at the usual place, said good ye to them as they close Sundays, one of the lady owners asked me to choose a pair of handmade earrings which we makes, gave them our website for next time they are in Spain. We had seen a flea market advertised near Fort Myers, some 30 miles away, now Alex is crazy over antiques and nick nacks (or as I call it, general rubbish!) so this seemed right up his street, I agreed to go as it was the same direction as the mall!! Arrived to find it wasn't a flea market as we know it, ie Rastro, it was more like Garrucha Market on speed, full of stalls selling a fair amount of tat and no antiques ... read more

Lovely sunny day blue skies etc. Time to head to the beach. Went to the usual breakfast place The Neighborhood cafe. Usual bowl of oatmeal and a coffee, Alex went overboard again with a bagel followed by a huge stack of pancakes! Got talking to some locals, Frank Jr the local fire fighter and his dad Frank Sr. plus Frank Sr's lady friend Jo Jo, lovely people and again fascinated by us living in Spain. Frank Sr aged 91 builds and renovates light aircraft and goes back and forth to Indiana, he wants to ship some of his aircraft to Spain! Now we had decided to extend our stay in Naples by 2 days but had to change rooms as ours was booked for a long stay. New room on the lower floor by the pool, ... read more

Amazing nights sleep, woke up early and dragged a reluctant Alex out for a run/power walk. Headed off in the direction of the beach and were not disappointed, powdery white sand, blue sea and hundreds of Pelicans diving for an early fish breakfast. It is no coincidence why endangered sea turtles return to nest and hatch here every summer, if I were a sea turtle I could think ofworse places to be. Took a walk along the pier and were delighted to see two dolphins bobbing in and out of the water, the many fishermen along the board walk didn't give them a second glance, I guess it is such a regular occurrence, they are run of the mill, unlike us Europeans who get excited at anything bigger than a goldfish. Found a super place for ... read more

The longest driving day of the trip started with four people packing up and detaching the umbilical support in the pouring rain...why is it always me that is holding live power in the rain and lightning? After a quick brekkie of whatever was in the cupboards (cookies) we made a quick detour back into Key West to pick up Justin's hire car which had been abandoned at Benihannas on the previous night. After a quick transfer of luggage and an 8 point turn for the RV in a brief respite from the rain, we all said our goodbyes and headed North back up the Keys. Thankfully the rain kept off and in about 2.5 hours we were clear of the Keys and making our first decision of the day...follow sat nav and 'the fast route' out ... read more

Jungle Jen and I are spending 5 days in Florida, visiting family and naturalizing, before heading to Ecuador. We spent the day at Corkscrew Swamp in Collier County and enjoyed large numbers of passerines including seven species of warbler (Prairie, Myrtle, Palm, Black and White, Pine, Common Yellowthroat and Northern Parula. We also saw a Painted Bunting, Great Crested Flycatchers and Baltimore Orioles). The highlight was watching a Musk Turtle eating a dead praying mantis! Five days until we fly to the Galapagos Islands!!... read more
