Blog 03-05-17 Moving Day I didn't have to be out of the park until 1 pm so I had no intention of moving fast. Watson and I took a walk around the whole campground then had a nice breakfast. I talked on the phone to catch up then decided to get a new folding chair since there was a Walmart just down the road and I didn't know if I could find one around Naples. There was just enough time to shop then come home and pack up and head south. I drove out of the park with 10 min to spare and decided to get gas down the road a ways. 75 was the interstate of choice and we were on and rolling down the road in no time. Then I started seeing signs about ... read more

After yesterday's trolley bus tour, now we know where things are, we took time this morning to take a closer look at a few of the features around Naples. Like all cities in the USA, Naples adopts the street/avenue grid system with the streets running parallel north to south and the avenues running west to east. Gulf Shore Boulevard runs parallel with the coast so is also 1stStreet. We drove the two and a bit miles from our hotel down this exclusive and quiet road that would definitely give the leafy suburbs of Belgravia in London a run for their money. Originally built in 1888 as a freight and passenger dock, Naples Pier stands as a city landmark. A narrow gauge train transported freight and baggage the entire length of the pier in the early 1900s. ... read more

Despite departure times of guests being staggered depending on individual circumstances, everyone has to vacate their stateroom by 7am regardless of whether your departure slot is 07:30 or 1030. For this reason disembarkation day can be chaos with all passengers, hand luggage in tow, crowding the breakfast buffet, lounge seats are at a premium and the customer service staff working overtime as those passengers have last minutes queries on their final account. Our allocated time was one of the early independent traveller slots at 07:15. We had breakfast as usual at the International café. The numbers dotted around the central piazza weren't any more than normal. Times are only approximations so we have to wait until immigration clear the ship. For this reason we were told to wait in the Concerto restaurant until out colour and ... read more

Some of you may be wondering where we got the name "Cat-Herders". Over the years, we have traveled with a large number of friends, mostly cruises. For some reason, we ended up the couple that made all the plans, arranged the excursions, and tried to ensure that everyone was where they should be at the right time. On one of the cruises, one of our friends said that watching us try to accomplish this was like watching someone try to herd cats. The name stuck. Just try to visualize someone herding cats. That's just what it's like. So, stay tuned. This could be interesting, as none of us have ever taken an RV adventure. In fact, I don't think any of us have ever driven one!... read more

Though we are still in Florida for the Winter, research has been ongoing for our upcoming RV trip. We have settled on our final routes, scoped out campgrounds, and most importantly located our wine resupply stops. The group will be getting together in a couple of weeks to go over our final preparations. I hope they are all as excited about this trip as we are. My husband is going to show me how to cast a fly rod as we plan to do some fishing along the way. ... read more

So you want to travel everywhere but your wallet says the furthest you will be traveling is the next town over. I can totally relate. I was blessed to be born into a family that loved to travel. Granted my dad's idea of travel had to be within driving distance and sleeping in the car instead of a hotel but every summer I looked forward to all of us cramming into the un airconditioned van and making new family memories. We were on a tight budget but we always had a family vacation. A few times we actually flew out of the country but in staying with family tradition there would be no hotel but rather a very distant cousin or aunts home. When I grew up, I told myself my child would experience a "REAL" ... read more

It was a sad morning. My cocktail friends were leaving the park today. Leslie and Mark from Minnesota decided they were heading north. Mark wanted to go to the Keys for a short while and Leslie was missing her grandkids back home so it appears going home won out. Mike was from New Brunswick, Canada and he was heading to his sister’s house in Tampa to leave his camper and car and head out for an Elder Hostel trip to Costa Rica. Mike had a trailer that was called an A liner and when assembled it was like an A frame house.Picture. It had lots of windows, in the form of sky lights, and seemed very open and roomy for being a little trailer. When folded up it was the same height as his car. Really ... read more

It was another lovely slow start to the day. Shower first thing then a very leisurely cup of coffee and caught up on the local and at home weather on the computer. Can’t believe there’s snow again. I really hate to tell you that it’s 67 at night and 85 during the day with beautiful sunshine most of the day. After Oscar’s walk and some conversation with my neighbor, I decided today was the air boat ride day. I called and made a reservation for 1 pm which was only an hour from now. Made a sandwich, put on the a c for Oscar and collected my stuff for the outing. The ride was an hour of riding through the grass swamps and mangrove forests and chasing birds from their food finding duties. We saw one ... read more

It was a leisurely get up this morning with a nice cup of coffee, a great shower and sitting outside to enjoy the fresh air. Then my neighbor Mike came over and asked if I’d like to join him on a short hike. Of course I said yes so off we went to a place just down the road called Thousand Islands Trail. It was a trail straight out into the mangroves on a road built for the hiking path. There was a 2 story tower to overlook the swamp with lots of area to see what birds were about. Not too much doing so we continued on the trail and saw a black snake, about a 5 ft alligator and some wading birds. We walked for quite a ways and it was getting hotter the ... read more
