After an early start to the next day, we drove the rest of the Gulf coast to Homestead, stopping in at Fort Myers Beach and Naples along the way. The brief stop at naples was highlighted by some magnificent mansions that littered the beachfront around Naples Pier. We also got a taste for the Everglades with plains of water constantly alongside the highway we drove on. Late that afternoon, we finally arrived at our host, Nancy’s house on the outskirts of Homestead. Everglades National Park was a part of our trip in which we were eager to see. It definitely isn’t the prettiest national park you will ever see, but it also holds a charm about it as well. With the exception of being attacked by swarms of Mosquitos, which were as thick as either of ... read more

Key Largo is very close to the Everglades National Park, which is back on the Florida mainland, so we drove back there for a day. It was still very stormy and, whilst this was not a major issue directly, it did get all the mosquitoes worked-up, which was a very, very big issue. Of all the places that I have visited, I have never known the mosquitoes to be so bad. As soon as we left the car we were surrounded by swarms of the little gits and, despite covering ourselves in insect repellent, we got bitten to pieces. Talking of getting bitten, we walked along the Anhinga Trail, which is supposed to be one of the best for spotting alligators. We spotted loads and were hence a bit concerned that there didn’t seem to be ... read more

Apologies for taking soooooo long to publish this blog! I have another 6 pending blogs and I promise to finish them without any delay! On our third day of florida trip, we wanted to spend the whole day at Everglades National Park. Everglades, famous for crocodiles and alligators and other reptiles, is the largest subtropical wilderness in United States. Although, we knew it was the wrong season (wet season) to visit the park, we were determined to encounter some alligators! We started early from our hotel, however, on the way, experienced one of the heaviest rain of our lives. We were on the freeway when it started raining and visibility was down to zero. We had to take an exit and lookout for a shelter. We parked our car and went to Dunkin’ Donuts. Generally people ... read more

Early Friday morning, May 30th, we decided to head out from Naples Yacht Club and head toward the Shark River. The Shark River is on the lower west coast of the Everglades, so as you can imagine, there are a lot of mangroves. It is truly beautiful there. The journey would take just about all day, as it is about 60 miles south of Naples. No sooner did we leave the channel in Naples and head into the gulf, but we saw a set of large dolphins swimming literraly 2 feet along side our boat. We tried desperately to capture their picture. Not sure it went so well. Later that afternoon we saw a large thunderstorm off in the distance. We heard a little bit of thunder, but the storm never actually passed over us. We ... read more

This mornin we jumped in2 the car and hiballed it 2 florida city which is right next 2 the everglades national park. It was only a 40 min drive so we got there in good time, checked in2 the hostel and headed straight 2 the national everglades national park 4 a bit of steve irwin action. The everglades is really a really wide river, but real shallow which is full of all sorts of creatures that wouldn't think twice about bitin off a limb or injecting u full of venom. On this trip i half expected not see much actual wildlife but within a few minutes we had spotted a tonne of lizards and a couple of turtles just swimmin round. Then a few minutes later we saw a big alligator just sat layin on the ... read more

I have been working for the University of Florida since 2006. My work focuses on exotic species, however I am constantly working on a variety of additional projects such as the one I am about to share. This past week I found myself living out of a trailer with four of my co-workers in Flamingo, Florida. Flamingo is located in the southwestern-most region of mainland Florida, and is accessible by car via the main park road of Everglades National Park. We were in Flamingo with the sole purpose of catching, measuring, and releasing American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus). My boss Dr. Frank Mazzotti and his research team have been conducting studies on American Crocodiles, among many other projects, in South Florida for the past 30+ years. Everything mentioned in this blog was done legally and under ... read more

Here are some photographs from my trip into the Everglades national park in South Florida. I visited an Allegator park where they have dozens of gators lying in a pond. I took a Airboat ride in the nearby marshland. Did a trail in the park where you see the gators lying around in the swamp. I was there for less than a day. I wish I had more time to explore the park. More full size photos at ... read more

Was will man mehr? Ich wäre nie auf die Idee gekommen nach Naples ... read more

The Everglades: See You Later Alligator North America » United States » Florida » Everglades By _Gaby_May 19th 2007Gaby Efter ett par dagar i South Beach, hämtade Isabel (Jessicas rumskompis) upp oss och vi spenderade natten hos hennes familj i Miami.

We left Big Torch Key early enough to make the start of the Tamiami Trail (the highway that runs to the west coast through the Everglades) by about 11am. The new section of bridge we being built when we drove down to the keys didn't seem to have gotten any longer since then, indicating how much time the whole highway must have taken to build! I have always wanted to go on an airboat, so I was really excited to find that there was no lack of airboat operators along the highway. We picked one that was run by the local Seminole Tribe, as we figured they'd probably know their way around. It was awesome! Continuing past the airboat tours into the Big Cypress National Park, clearly the couple of alligators we saw on the airboat ... read more
