The directions are not very elaborate. “Follow Highway 90 west. You’ll see a Shell station on your left. We’ll meet you there”. The annoyingly ancient basic GPS system in our rental car looks more like colorful digital spaghetti than a map on which you would actually find your location, but with its (and an old-school map. and a bit of common sense) help we find the Tamiami trail and head towards our meeting point. It’s hard to believe that on both sides of this highway there are (nearly) endless swamps. The highway cuts through the Glades straight as an arrow to the other side of the peninsula, without giving away much of the spectacular nature and scenery only meters away. Captain Bill looks the part of a swamp man. Authoritative, casual, seasoned, tanned. It’s obvious that ... read more

Another excellent nights sleep, another early start. Breakfast in the Neighbourhood cafe, delicious bowl of oatmeal and Alex excelled himself with a toasted bagel with peanut butter, jelly and cream cheese followed by a large helping of french toast with maple syrup! An exciting day ahead of us, cameras at the ready, we headed into the Everglades to take an airboat tour into the swamps to see the wildlife. Captain Andy took us aboard a small 6 seater airboat along with a nice family from New Jersey, within seconds of departing the dock, 4 pelicans had hitched a ride and sat inches from me and the young New Jersey lad with the slightly amusing name of Griffin...seriously! Next animal up was a friendly racoon who came right up to the boat on a tree branch, very ... read more

So the long road home began. Our Virgin Atlantic flight wasn't due to leave Miami International Airport until 21:10 tonight so still plenty of time for things to do, places to see! We departed the Ocean Pointe apartments at 10:30. I had already keyed our next destination in to the satnav; Everglades Safari Park. The Everglades is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We can't come all this way and pass so close to the natural habitat of crocs and alligators without taking a little detour and perhaps a ride on an airboat. Besides it's on our way back to the airport! Before we did anything we needed to fill up with petrol. Gas stations were plentiful on the way down so it was no surprise within 1 mile of leaving Tavernier we were pulling up along ... read more

Everglades 26.-27.12.2012 We spent two superb days exploring the Everglades national park area. Our hostel, Everglades International Hostel, provides free breakfast in form of ingredients to make your own pancakes on an outdoors stove, so that's how we started our mornings: Leo making the best pancakes of the hostel (a comment he received from a co-resident, and I cannot disagree either ;-). On day one we drove our car to Shark Valley visitor center planning to rent bikes to take the 24 kilometer bike ride around the wetlands. We arrived at the entrance to find out that firstly, the parking lot was full, and second, there was a waiting list to rent bikes. Neither issue proved too serious, though, we managed to park the car a bit outside of the park, and landed bikes after some ... read more

May 3, 2012 After spending the night in Homestead, we woke up early and hit the road for the Everglades. After stopping at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center, we saw our first alligators at Royal Palm, Anhinga Trail. We also saw a turtle and lots of birds, including an anhinga of course. On Gumbo Limbo Trail we saw lots of lizards. Next stop was the Pa-hay-okee Overlook. This boardwalk allows for great views of the "River of Grass", and we heard from a guide later that the Overlook is a perfect place to watch the sunset. Right under the overlook we saw a barred owl at very close range. He sat there silently while we took lots of pictures of him and watched him in awe. He was so beautiful and we were so lucky ... read more

"I loved when we saw the spoonbills. They were awesome. The smores where amazing. I went with my friend Luna. We played on an ipad. It was very nice. I hold an alligator but I dropped it. And I held a snake. It was very very nice. We went on a airboat. It was sooo cool. It was noisy. We slept in tents. And my brother came with us."- Sofia ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After living in Miami for over 6 years and never going to the everglades, daddy thought now was the time. So with my brother, Vitor, and good friend Luna and her crazy dad Sean, we went to camp for a night. Less than an hour away, we first stopped at Rober Is Here to have awesome milkshakes as we checked out the animals at the ... read more

Fantastic Flamingo I have just spent 10 wonderful days on a personal writing retreat in sub-tropical paradise. I really hit pay dirt on my destination this time, Flamingo campground on the tip of the Florida peninsula (a world heritage site). Flamingo is one of 2 campgrounds in Everglades National Park. I thought it might be a real refuge (away from the madding crowds), and sure enough it was perfectly peaceful. From the van where I slept I had a fantastic view of the Florida Bay, hardly anyone is in the tent camping loop. The other 2 loops are much busier with RVs. The Bay is very shallow with lots of red mangroves all around. The water from Lake Okeechobee flows all the way through the lower part of the state, through limestone and mud, and a ... read more

With the bed of my truck packed Matt and I were off to pick up Rana, Jackie, and Krista on our way to Everglades City. By the time we had everyone’s stuff in the back of my truck it was so full I wasn’t sure how we would keep things from blowing out as we drove down interstate 75. It was an easy drive that only required one gas stop and a dinner break. While having dinner an Applebee’s one member of our group (to remain anonymous) commandeered additional silverware that was forgotten to be packed and added it to her purse while the waitress wasn’t looking. For a moment I was afraid that she was actually going to add all of our place settings to her oversized bag but just a few forks, spoons, and ... read more

Stasa mentioned a fun but touristy activity for us to do while in Miami--an airboat tour. I really had no idea what it was about. She'd mentioned it was through "the everglades," but I honestly didn't even know what the Everglades were. We made the short drive in and chose an airboat tour location at random. The one we picked was called Gator Park, and it had an Indian Outpost souvenir shop. We forked over $24 each (wowza! Grab some brochures that have coupons from your hotel if you go), and then hopped in a boat with a dozen other tourists. Our tour guide steared the boat from a seat on a perch above us. He was filled with information and easily pointed out turtles, birds and alligators to us. We learned a bit about the ... read more
