Motorhome News from North America 31 16th - 27th December 2006 Florida. Down the east coast to The Everglades and The Florida Keys. It takes a while to recover from the relentless joy of exploring Disneyworld day after day and long into the night. We’re still standing, still walking, though the pace has slowed, the hiking distances less challenging for a while. The south Florida heat is relentless too. It is not so much the heat - in the upper 70’s and 80’s most of the time - but the humidity: 98%, sticky and sweaty by midday. Our air-conditioning works fine, but we now also own a 12inch electric fan to keep the air on the move overnight. We were dreaming of a white Christmas as we headed down to the Florida Keys. Fat chance of ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 30 4th - 15th December 2006 Florida - Disney and a Space Shuttle launch. All in one week! A week or so in another world It was the 5th January 2007 before we discovered our mistake. There had been no complaints, no questions asked from either side of the pond (except for brother Michael - thanks Mike). Y’all had been rushing around like frustrated reindeer preparing for Christmas, totally and blissfully unaware that Newsletter 30 had never reached your computers - and we were equally unaware it had not been sent. Now and again, our wireless internet connection is inadequate, low signal or something, and our transmission fails under the exertion of adding photographs or finishing the job perhaps; failing to respond to the touch of the ‘publish’ button, unbeknown to ... read more

Over my luxurious stay at the Hotel Lorraine, I had decided that I would have to give the Everglades hostel another chance. Judging the hostel from the outside and retreating to Key West with my tail between my legs was niggling at me too much. So I was off, saying farewell to Miami Beach with a smile. The poverty was depressing, the crime was all too apparent and the people were too beautiful. But I liked it and I’m sure I’ll be back sometime. After the now normal battle on the interstate I headed to Florida City, and the Everglades hostel. Once actually inside the hostel things started to look a little more encouraging. I rang the necessary bell to attract the hostel owner who looked as if he had run away from the lead role ... read more

Hey everyone. It has been another eventful couple of weeks. It has really flown by. Thanks to everyone who has emailed us. We really appreciate it and apologize that we don't always get the time to reply to you all individually. We spent another couple of days around Williamsburg and Jamestown, Virginia and cycled to the site of the first (successful) British colony in the US. There is a great visitors centre with replicas of the original ships the settlers travelled over on. From there we travelled on to Savannah, Georgia. It was set up as a town, paid for by the British Government, for those who wanted to escape poverty, injustice, class divides etc. The whole idea didn't really last very long, but the thought was there. It is a totally planned town. If you ... read more

January 19, Wednesday All truly great thoughts are conceived while hiking------- Nietzsche Arriving at the Everglades we stopped at the Visitor’s Center for an overview of the park. Bob got his passport stamped. National Parks Passport Bob has a passport from the National Park Service, which can be purchased at any of the parks. Every time we go near a National Parks, Monument etc., he likes to get it stamped to show we have been there. The Park service also issues a set of picture stamps from different parks every year. This would make a great gift for someone who likes to collect memorbilia. From the park entrance it is 38 miles to the Flamingo Campground, our destination. Before moving ahead we went to Long Pine Nature Trail for a bike ride and returned on the ... read more

We left Orlando and reached my in-laws condo in Hollywood. Next day, we went to visit the Everglades national park. This was the place I was most eager to see in this trip. :-) The Southern part of Florida is almost tropical. There are 2 distinct seasons: dry and wet. In the winter, we were in the dry season. This is the best time to visit as animals are concentrated around waterholes. We saw countless birds, alligators, turtles, snakes, fish, etc.... WE entered the park by Homestead city, and went all along to Flamingo where is the end of the road. Different loop trails allows you to visit different ecosystems: pine forests, (in fact quite common in center of Florida), cypress swamps, saw grass marshes, mangrove forests, and hammocks, (broadleaf 'islands' in the middle of a ... read more
