On Veteran's Day we drove through Virginia and arrived in the nation's capital, Washington DC by early evening. Our hotel was centrally located downtown, just a stone's throw away from 'dubya's' place (but no, this time we didn't try to measure by throwing stones!). After dinner, Fitz took us on a night tour of the National monuments and memorials which included the Capitol building, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial (FYI Lincoln's statue is saying his initials in American Sign language!), both the Korean and Vietnam War Memorial's (which were quite harrowing) and finally we walked to the back of the White House - they were all pretty impressive as were the numerous other grand city buildings. The next morning, we all went off separately to see different things. Washington has many things to see and do - ... read more

Dear All, Well, we finally set off from Heathrow on the 1st November and landed the same day at Dulles. The flight was pretty painless and the officials at Dulles, a little less grim than when Joanna and I went over (the Dec after Sept 11). Jeff picked us up from the airport and we were whisked away to their beautiful home on a golf course in Rockville, just north of DC. The boys have really grown and Clare is looking as amazing as ever. We took the evening to relax and catch up, ready for touring the next day. The next morning Jeff kindly dropped us off at the Metro and we were off! Washington is quite literally the President's back garden and so everything is really well laid out, clean and organised. We decided ... read more

Recently returned from a 3 day getaway to DC and finally getting around to writing up a recap of the trip. I lived in DC from 92-97 and returned in 99 for a few days while participating in the USMC Marathon and like many folks did an internship in DC while in college (went the business route rather than the congressional route) but feel as though Ive only seen ¼ of what the city has to offer. A return trip to one of my favorite cities was prompted when searching the web for cheap airfares from CHS (which basically is an oxymoron). After broadening my search to departures from MYR, I found a $98 RT fare from MYR to DCA on Spirit Airlines. This deal was well worth the 1½ drive from CHS to MYR so ... read more

Washington was really good, there are heaps and heaps of museums all of which are free - ideal for the budget conscious backpacker!!!! We took advantage of this and did a tour of the Capitol Building, wandered through the air and space museum, where Warwick would have happily spent all day! It was an interesting museum with lots of original pieces that have broken records - the 1st balloon to float around the world was there, as well as the 1st plane to fly around the world without stopping to refuel. The American history museum had so much stuff inside that we ran out of time and didn't get to see that much of it...... We did get to see the flag that inspired the American national anthem. In the war against the british - the ... read more

I met Teresia and John in Alexandria, VA for a quick holiday tour in and around DC. What a great time we had. We drove through the Shenandoah Valley to Civil war battle sites including Gettysburg. Tried to purchase a memory stick from an incompetent group of staff at Radio Shack, I very nearly had to do their job just to make the sale. Saw Jefferson’s Monticello and then back up to Alexandria. I must say if you are in the DC area make a visit to historic Alexandria, a perfect community if I’ve ever seen one. Did the obligatory sites in DC. Best eat: The Old Ebbitt Grill just a block away from the White House ... read more

Oh shit! I'm getting wet, the f#*@in sprinklers just turned on! My first night in DC finds me layin under a bush @ 3am trying to sleep! Due to flooding @ my present accommodation I moved into a nearby 24hr dunkin donuts to wait it out till 7 in the morn to catch a train to downtown. This all came about because when I got to DC @ about 10:30pm a metro dude (not a guy who likes tight pink shirts) at the train station told me the address i was goin to, there was no hostels and it was dodgy (I'd get a cap popped in my ass). So he tried to help me out and find me another one but no luck, then a hotel, expensive as hell! but he told me a suburb ... read more
