I am clearly rubbish as this travel blog lark. I have been having way too much fun and for the most part am never even near a computer which really doesn't help much. I am currently refusing to use internet cafes here as they cost five million squiddles an hour but I said I'd do it (Neil, I think this may be your fault) so I will but be warned, it will be when I grab a moment here or there and will mostly be a bish, bash, bosh rush job. Miss you all millions. Make sure you get your arses out here at the first opportunity. Peace. (hep, hep). ... read more

Hello, Everyone -- Well, the weather was much warmer today, so canvassing was the name of the game. I finished up yesterday's route, and surprise-surprise -- I had a meaningful discussion with a McCain supporter who did not run me off his porch. He stepped out and we chatted, so much in fact, that I went back to headquarters to get some Obama on Veterans literature and dropped it off later. I also talked to an Iraqi soldier who is headed back next week. He told me he's not planning to vote at all. He was so polite and friendly, really a great guy. The afternoon took me to an area that is predominantly Obama supporters. Like my other experiences in canvassing, people smile and want to talk about why they are voting for Obama. Overall, ... read more

Hello, Everyone -- Today was the Joe Biden rally. We woke up to four inches of snow, and 30 mph howling winds, and the wind didn't stop until early evening. The severe weather was not a welcome sight to the long line of people that formed a line outside the high school gym where the rally was held. My job was simple, go up and down the line and inform people about the high security measures and what they needed to do to efficiently make it through the metal detector. I also pulled some people out of line to go to the front -- a woman who had just had chemo, several couples with babies, and others with various ailments that make them incompatible with the weather. Everyone else had to stick it out, including me. ... read more

Hello, Everyone -- Today was full of action ... this morning my host, Jenny, kidnapped me for a Starbucks run and workout (24 Hr Fitness has not seen this much of me in one week since I joined). We then stopped at a furniture consignment store, and took a drive in the canyon (gorgeous!). By the time I got home and cleaned up, it was well after Noon when I got to campaign headquarters. I apologetically walked in, but was put to work right away. I had my first shot at canvassing, which turned out to be fun, way more fun than phone calls. I am finding that Obama supporters have a sort of kinship, a bond of all of us who still have hope that this election result will bode well for our upcoming four ... read more

What a day! We started off dropping the girls at school, and hitting Starbucks, then the gym. I got to the Obama headquarters just in time for them to pack me off to the southern Colorado Springs town of Fountain -- where the Latino vote is. The weather was hateful today, so it was an indoor day. I did some data entry -- results of canvassing and phone calls, then made some phone calls myself to voters who had asked for mail-in ballots. Part of my job is to ask them for whom the voter intends to cast his/her vote. I discovered I am uncomfortable with this, but I asked it anyway. If they are pro-Obama, I ask if they will come down to volunteer a few hours making calls or knocking on doors. I didn't ... read more

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have hit the jackpot! After waiting two hours for my host to show up at her house, the organizers moved me to a different home. Now, this new host-woman woke up this morning not knowing anyone was going to be staying with her family tonight. In fact, she didn't know until 45 minutes before I showed up. She just had given a garage sale yesterday so you can imagine how her place looks. It is heaven to me. I was immediately welcomed by the two daughters -- ages 10 and 14. I've corrected one's homework, and gotten a complete tour and dog update from the other. They have a designer dog -- Snickers. Very cute. Jenny, the host, is going to try to get me a ticket to a big Obama dinner ... read more

Hello, Everyone -- I am safe and sound in Colorado Springs. As happened the last time I blogged (you'll remember if you were reading it two years ago), my host is not home. I drove MILES to find a Starbucks, and am contentedly using the WiFi until my phone rings and I hear she's home. I have found her home, but can't wait to see the inside! The drive today was gorgeous. Flat in Texas, a little hilly with desert (brown landscape with green blobs) and beautiful bright yellow trees lined up like soldiers every few miles. In Colorado we added steep mountains, curvy roads, and an occasional scarlet red tree. Man! All of it uphill too. I was glad I wasn't running any part of it! The town is a little on the dreary side ... read more

I can't believe how easy it was to get to the airport! After our very confused trip out of Boston 2 weeks ago, this was a breeze. We dumped off the car, caught the shuttle, caught the plane, caught another plane and landed on time in Colorado Springs. AND, the Blazer didn't have a flat tire like it did when we got back from Alaska. Sweet. We picked up the dogs from Steph's, got home about 6:00 pm where the cats were very happy to see us and..... that's all folks. It was the best trip ever. ... read more

We hired a two-man canoe and after a minimal briefing from Dave (the driver - who enjoys a good fig) we paddled off on the 31 mile canoe trip through Escalante and Dominguez Canyons. Part of the enjoyment of adventure is not knowing who or where your decisions will lead. This is what I was thinking when Dave waved us off without any safety briefing, and just the vague arrangement of picking us up from the side of the river bank in two days time. The next 3 days we spent paddling down stream and parking up where we fancied, taking breaks by tying the canoe up to a rock and listening to the lapping of the current whilst lying back and watching the clouds above. There was the usual; "Your side! Paddle your side"; "mind ... read more

Hi- am actually writing this in San Francisco- it's been so long since we've had access to free internet!(sept 8th). Anyway - to continue on sat 23rd of Aug we did a 2 hour walk in GOG in the morning and escorted some seniors who didn't know where they wre going for some of the way- they were originally dutch and had come over about 50 years ago- you could still hear a slight accent and they could speak dutch! When we got back to the motel there was a thunderstom brewing so we waited until it passed over until we went in the pool - the motel owner told us it was dangerous to go in as lighting could hit the pool even though the storm was quite a few miles away in the mountains. ... read more
