On the 15th, we rolled into Boulder. Both of us were super impressed that the Subaru had held up so well (had to replace the muffler, as part of it fell off in Minnesota...just made for a noisy ride) and we were certainly grateful for that. Reflecting on the trip, we realized how awesome it was and how excited we were to see all that stuff. But nothing compares to being able to stay in one place for more than one night in a row and shower and go the fridge and get some food. The past week has been spent getting our apartment arranged and buying all the little things that you forget that you need. We love Boulder, and have been doing some hiking. When the weather permits, we plan to do some camping ... read more

Hello Dear readers, Don't get too excited, I'm not actually coming back into the world of the blog. Instead, I'm just wanting to touch base with a number of family and friends before departing on my next adventure! Starting May 1, I'm going to be leading wilderness expeditions with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). My first course is instructor training in the Wind River Wilderness area of Wyoming from May 1 - June 4. After that, who knows? Here in the USA the school leads trips in Wyoming, Washington and Alaska, and the rest of my summer and fall will be determined after my first expedition. So for now I'm signing off. Unlike my time in India and East Africa, there will be no phone access, no email access, no facebook scrabulous and no electricity. ... read more

Distance: 6.5 miles Difficulty: Easy Ah, the unpredictability of the Colorado Spring! After some warm but extremely windy days at the end of March, I had to wait until the middle of April for my next hiking opportunity. Thanks to the weather pattern that sat over the entire state for most of the spring, wind was an ever-present pest on most of my hikes. With the temperatures finally starting to warm up for good, my dad and I headed to Rabbit Mountain on the border between Boulder and Larimer County. As I’ve mentioned before, Boulder County is one of the best places for open space parks within about an hour of Denver. In fact, Jefferson County is really the only other county that competes with Boulder for open space park acreage. Rabbit Mountain, which occupies the ... read more

Distance ~ 5 miles Difficulty: moderate As I’ve mentioned before, March weather in Colorado is inconsistent at best. Nice days without rain or snow tend to be few and far between. After an unusually warm first day of the month, winter took over again, and the hiking would have to wait. Warmer weather finally returned at the end of the month, so my dad and I decided to play hooky and head up to the Boulder for my second (his first) hike of the year. We were greeted by beautiful clear skies and a light wind that kept this moderate hike very comfortable. The South Mesa Trailhead is a very popular area at the southern end of the city of Boulder’s open space territory, just east of Eldorado Canyon State Park. The trailhead represents the southern ... read more

A long delayed update... I won't try and catch up on all our travels since I originally signed up for this blog site. The stories from our wandering across the US by VW van, the two months in New Zealand, the trips to SW Utah and Iceland, and the cruising by sailboat in Maine and the Bahamas will have to be related in person - or you can at least get the visual story from the photo page at my website, http://web.mac.com/steve_hoge . Now Kate and I are embarking on a somewhat more ambitious, long term trip with our bicycles, beginning in Spain and onto Morocco and beyond. In the usual frenzied final weeks before leaving Boulder, we rebuilt our bikes, put our finances on computerized autopilot, got all of our shots (THREE weekly injections for ... read more

The next few days after my trip with Becca were spent slothing around her apartment & doing emails at the Boulder Public Library. On the 26th, we volunteered again for 5430 Sports, this time for a 3km run through the centre of town. We now had moved up to microchip detachers after the runners crossed the finish line (woo hoo- promotion!). We met a lovely couple who were retirees who live in Staten Island, NY most of the year, but head out to Boulder for their summers. They LOVE sports, and until recently have been avid competitors, but now spend all of their time volunteering for sporting events & enjoying Boulder! They take a class at the University to get student accomodation, and have a ball living there. Well, I was asking them if anyone ever ... read more

Becca dragged me awake at 4.45 (WHY did I agree to this??????) so we could head to the Boulder Reservoir and volunteer for a triathlon hosted by 5430 Sports. I am not exactly an early morning person, and definitely not when the reason is to wake up to watch sports, but I thought I'd try to do a good thing & help out. I was rewarded by a beautiful sunrise over the reservoir as we parked the car, which was laden with kayaks & sports kit. Tyson & I headed to the volunteer area & got some spiffy green t-shirts, and were given the task of being split timers for the transition from bike to run. We watched the competitors, and I have to say I am so impressed that anyone can do such a tough ... read more

We woke up late after a late night drinking session, and had a big brekkie at Becca's place. Becca & Tyson then decided to take me on a hike in the area, which I was sort of nervous about, since they are athletes & have a slightly different take on a "little hike" than I do. Becca's friend recommended a hike nearby, so we drove through the beautiful mountains past Nederland (called Ned by the locals) to the Hesse wilderness area. We parked the car & I got all of my new kit on (new hiking boots, water bottles, binoculars, camera, etc). The hike to the Lost Lake started at 9000 feet & ended at 9800 feet, over 3 miles. It was really beautiful, passing mountain streams & through the forest. Becca & Tyson were great ... read more

(Again, apologies for this blog- I lost it in the crash, so here's the re-creation.) Last night I said goodbye to Madeline & my mom & flew to Boulder to begin the next part of my journey. It was great to see Becca at the airport- I was happy she could come & get me so I didn't have to lug my bags on the bus. We went home & chilled out- she has an awesome condo in Boulder, with views of the Flatirons, so pretty! And so different from city life in Philly. You instantly sense that everyone is far more chilled out & relaxed & happy than people on the east coast (of course there are exceptions!). We went to a great sushi dinner with a friend of hers from work, and then got ... read more
