Motoring through Kansas and into Colorado, we again saw how each individual state appears to have it's own distinctive physical landscape. Within an hour of crossing the state line into Colorado, the barren plains were replaced by the fragmented foothills and uncountable mountain peak silouettes contributing to the Rocky Mountain range which stretches over 3000 miles to form the physical spine of America. If you think of the furthest distance possible between two points in the UK (i.e. Lands End to John O'Groats) you end up with 874 miles so the Rockies is some expanse of wilderness in comparison. For the last week or so, we've abstained from Youth Hostels (through necessity rather than choice), so when we found from the Internet that Denver had two hostels, we penned down the details and went on a ... read more

We drove into Boulder, Colorado tired from the heat, traveling, rafting trip, and long drives. In Boulder, we stayed with my Uncle Pat, Aunt Nora, and cousins Connor, and Maggie. They live in a nice house in pleasant neighborhood. Overall, Boulder is a city with a small-town feel to it, laidback and friendly. After a delicious dinner of barbeque chicken, we decided to skip fireworks the night (no big deal for me) for and get to bed early. The next day, we slept in, relaxed, and planned our day (with the help of Connor and Maggie). For lunch, we went to the Walnut Brewery, a micro-brewery and restaurant that makes six of its own beers. We sampled four of the beers before we ate, and had a good meal with the tasty local beer. We ... read more

Sorry for the lack of entries, Dillon's been keeping me exhausted! I'll just give a quick run-down of what I've been up to since I left Heather's and I'll fill in the details and add pictures later. Monday: Spent the morning in the Estes Park Library playing on the computer and getting my electronic life sorted out. Dillon came and picked me up after class and we went to the creek to watch people playing in the water. We went for dinner at BJ's and stole some beer tasting glasses. Then we came back to Dillon's place and proceeded to exchange marching band music and discuss marching band for a few hours. Dillon's roommate Jake really wanted to see Transformers so we hit up the 11:30 show and didn't get back until 2am...good movie though! ... read more

Distance: 7.6 miles Rating: easy-moderate One of these days, I’m just going to have to get over the high cost of living and just move up to the Boulder area. There are so many nice hiking options up there! Boulder County is one of the Front Range counties that have set aside a nice amount of land for open space parks. There are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of miles of hiking trails within the county’s borders. I guess they figured out that people like to enjoy the outdoors! Heil Valley Ranch is not what I would consider the most extraordinary destination in the Boulder area foothills, but it is definitely a pretty place. If your idea of a nice hike involves wondering through a dense pine forest, then this is the place to go. My ... read more

Distance: 4 miles Rating: strenuous Nice spring weather continued into the end of March and early April along the front range, so I seized the opportunity to get in another hike. With this time of year, you never really know what kind of weather is going to be thrown your way, so its best to take advantage every possible sunny day. I was just getting over a particularly nasty cold, so I figured it would be a good idea to take it relatively easy on this hike. Well, this hike may be fairly short, but relatively easy it certainly isn't. For anyone planning on doing this, be prepared for a bit of leg burner. I would compare this trail to Hanging Lake (see my entry): it may be only one mile up, but it is a ... read more

Distance: 3.5 miles Rating: Via Sanitas Valley trail - difficult After making it through a long, cold, and miserable winter, we Coloradans were rewarded with early summer-like weather in March. For those who aren't from around here, March tends to be our snowiest month, so when the temperatures hit the lower 70's, I started to get pretty excited! So, I dusted off the hiking boots and headed up to the Boulder area for my first warm-up hike (think of it almost like my pre-season...). The Mt. Sanitas loop is a part of Boulder's extensive foothills trail system and provides some great views of the Flatirons to the south and the Indian Peaks to the west. Despite being only about three and a half miles in length, this trail can be quite challenging regardless of the route ... read more
