Booked a trip through Travelocity. Man, their last minute deals were pretty good. Was set to spend the holiday weekend in Dallas until I found this. Flights to San Fran were $300...this was flight and hotel for $400/ Of course...no knowing what the state of the hotel will be....... Got to S. F. airport with no drama and as taxis are not cheap took the Bart down town. Very easy to use now they link directly to the airport. ($5 whereas taxi woulda been $40) Wasn't too sure where to get off as we didn't know where hotel was so just headed to Market street and walked. Good job we only had a small backpack as hotel was quieter a walk....all down Market, Along Embarcardo, into fishermans wharf. Quick stop at the seals ...arhhhhhhhh. HOTEL. Sweet, ... read more

I went to the hostel that we where staying at 2nd St 1 block from the beach and I saw this hippy lookin bloke with dreads and a beard. Then I realized it was Kev, we sat in our room and caught up for a while then went down to the beach and hired a double bike and rode along the beach to Venice beach. Really nice, lots of shops and the gym on the beach. That night we drank a few bundy rums (that I bought in Sydney duty free) with our 2 German room mates. Kev loved it, he hadn't had bundy for time. The next morning we got up early and got a bus into L.A and then a bus to Vegas!... read more

I left Sydney at 3pm on the 23rd and after a 13 hr flight a few movies, Jim beam blacks ( you would have loved it Walsh) and a top sunset and sunrise (B, the sun sets behind you and you case it round the world and it rises when you get close to the Calli coast) I arrived in L.A.X at 11am the same day, 4 hrs before I left. I was met by the camp people and went to the crown plaza hotel for a night. We had a couple of hours to kill so me and a few other people doing camp went for a walk around d L.A for a look. I brought a new phone and guy told me it was a Tri-band phone I can use it anywhere. The number ... read more

This whole thing was written in the terminal of SFO waiting for the flight to Seoul / Incheon. It isn't all that interesting, but it is certainly representative of the kind of things that run through my mind when I'm under a lot of stress. I was listening to the Breeders' album, "Last Splash," which is an album I'd recommend to any one. Right now (June 9, 12:39 PM, Korea Time) I'm listening to the Distillers, "Sing Sing Death House," I think, sitting at a computer on a glass-topped counter in a PC-room in my hotel, smoking cigarettes and getting ready to run late for work. I haven't got any photos yet, because my phone is in Korean. I'll figure it out sooner or later. The following is, again, something you might not want to ... read more

Quiet. The sun beats down on the bleachers. They are hot. People carry umbrellas, wear baseball hats, shimmer with shiny oil over their skin: anything to keep the sun off. Tiny birds flit around the tennis courts. They launch themselves from their corner mud and grass nests, inched between cement arches that shadow the walkway from the gym to the exercise center. They tumble about the air, like children with wings, fluttering over the swimming pool, across the dry grasses which sweep across small hillocks; they overlook the sparkling bay, a hint of the sun caught in their eyes as they flash through evergreens. A battle is taking place on the court below. A slash, and then a flurry of green. The people on the bleachers erupt like an explosion of energy. He (the winner) holds ... read more

It felt good to get back to the structured lifestyle of the USA after recharging our batteries in Belize. Although we didn't get out of the airport until gone midnight, we had our hire car ready and waiting for us there and we managed to find our hostel without too much trouble. My first worrying San Fran incident came very early in our stay. After checking in I had to park the car about half a mile from the hostel and walk through a dark, quiet residential estate to get back. On the walk back a large cat that looked pregnant walked out into the path about fifteen feet in front of me. I tried to get its attention ("here pussy pussy") only for it to stop dead and slowly turn towards me. It was then ... read more

Here are some select photos from my going away parties. Grade A props to everyone who came out and celebrated with me. I had a great time. Special thanks to the puppy hat and to the kind ladies who posed for pictures with me despite my absymal personal hygiene, inferior rapping and dancing skills and deplorable attempts at pickup lines. Your charity, pity and merciful kindness will not be forgotten when I am RICH!!! RICH I TELL YOU! P.S. For those of you who knew about my pre-party medical purple alert, I am happy to report that everything is still working, in optimal condition vibration-free! Look out world.... read more

"We won't know how good we were as parents until our grandchildren are raised." --John Bradshaw After a futile attempt to sleep in the van, we found a place that was serving breakfast, and had an early, early breakfast. Our next stop was an RV park for a shower and a cleanup session. Then we were off to Death Valley. When we were young, we can remember watching Death Valley Days and the good old 20-mule-team Boraxo wagon train. Those are great stories. We stopped at the National Park Service Visitor Center and we chatted with some of the rangers. One of them said it was one of the nicest days of the year that he could remember. We left Death Valley and continued to the town of Pahrump and settled in at a motel. ... read more
