Woke up feeling ruph after partying till the wee hours with Chang. Resolved to possibly nap and talk to Pop about the itinerary. He beat me to the punch. Grandpa David is apparently about to depart this world, and I am feeling that familiar disorienting mix of guilt, numbness and distraction that have accompanied the passing of my other two gramps. Your-grandfather-is-dying conversations are uniformly awkward and unpleasant, particularly when you hate telephonic communication as much as I do. The upside is that my tickets are booked and the railpass is on its way. I shudder to think of the jagged cavity left in my modest bank account after those charges book. I am really being diligent about reassuring myself about this leap. It seems to have some calming effect, but I am pacing a lot ... read more

We’ve quit our jobs, packed our bags, and we’re going for a little bike ride ...across the US We're just getting our gear together, but we'll be hitting the road on Tuesday (May 10th). The plan is to pedal from Southern California to Virginia… or Canada if we don’t feel that 3,200 miles is enough. Barring accidents, failed joints, or break-ups… we’ll get to dip our tires in more than one ocean. We hope to succeed or fail before August, when at least one of us is due for grad school in North Carolina. Our friends are already lending us a hand. Before we leave, they’ve made sure that we DON’T GET BIG HEADS, by sharing some predictions about the events that ahead of us… Smallest Town We'll Ride Through...(pop.) Look at him - He's a beaut! After 10 weeks of playing phone tag with Peter Molnar, I finally have a date and time to talk to him about the Old Country. Although I barely know the man, I consider him my best contact in B-P, because his family is networked in to the HU wine industry on several levels. While I don't have any intention of becoming a wine buyer in Eger, it's good to know people who love classy tipple as much as I do. Peter M has a expansive reach, as he has his hands in pies from Buda to Berkeley, from Lake Balaton to Lake County. I may be exaggerating his interests, but in talking to him, I recognized the notes of overcommitment and nuances of frazzle in his voice. His story ... read more

First task completed: acquire travel blog services. I'm itchy to make real progress; procrastination won't do me any good on this continent. I want to edit my user icon. This guy looks like a real cheery bro.... read more

So I am home. After what some may consider a long trip, and others a short one. I counted 30 passes through immigration in 12 countries on 4 continents. I had a fantastic time, but I am a bit tired of traveling (for now). I sort of got to the point where everything started blending together. I found that my incremental enjoyment for each new place was becoming quite low, and that I really wanted to have a bit more stability in my life. Once I came to this realization, I booked a ticket back to the states. Oddly enough - I am actually looking forward to going back to work. I know this makes me sound like a freak in the backpacking community. But the truth is after almost 6 months of living basically in ... read more

The last couple of days we have seen a whole heap of LA. We went on a tour on Thursday of LA and visited Beverly Hills, Farmers Market, Hollywood (with the stars on the path and the footprints e.t.c) we have even been to Venice Beach - where it rained for the half hour that we were there! On Thursday night we went to a Medieval Times Dinner which was awesome!! We cheered on our knight as he fought the others in sword fights and jousting and the best part was we got to eat our dinner with our fingers - as they had no cutlery back then! Yesterday we hired a car and tried our luck on the LA freeways...Very scary....But worth it to get to the Alan Jackson and Sara Evans Concert. HA HA. ... read more

This is the first time in my life that I am going for the sake of adventure and journey. In the past it's always been an issue of finding something better, or wanting where the grass is greener..... its not the case with this next trip... could it mean I'm finally grown up and understand the contentness of life while pursuing my dream? I think so! Yeah for grown ups lke me! ;) I am sad that I'll be leaving someone that I didn't expect to get so attached to. David-if your reading this blog, thank you for being such a Godly example and still willing to be goofy and silly with me..... We really had such great times... HAD Rules! By the way, I have 5 more days till I leave L.A and drive ... read more

This was actually my second visit to the bustling Californian city of San Francisco, but from my prior visit as a naive 14 year old boy all I remembered about San Francisco was the scary trip to Alcatraz Island, the crazy maximum security prison that stopped being used in 1963 and is now a museum. However once we were hanging off cable cars going up and down the incredibly steep streets (including the winding Lombard Street) of San Francisco the previous memories came back to me. We stayed a block from Union Square, which is an incredibly busy and bustling places full of buskers and scammers looking to get a few bucks out of some naive tourists. The Fisherman's Bay area is nice for a wander and we also went to the Pink Ladies, which are ... read more

I usually go to Las Vegas at least once a year. Mainly to attend conferences or trade shows such as NAB (National Association of Broadcasters). And everytime, I've driven from LA to Vegas, on the 15 freeway, I would see signs for Peggy Sue's 50's Diner. I assumed the I followed the freeway signs and ate at Peggy Sue's Diner but after paying the bill, I noticed the receipt said "Penny's Diner". Darn, next time I'll make sure it's Peggy Sue's! In any case, the food was reasonably priced "comfort" food. Meaning it'll make you FAT if you eat there every day.... read more
