Gearin' upGearin' upGearin' up

Just got the training wheels off!

We’ve quit our jobs, packed our bags, and we’re going for a little bike ride ...across the US

We're just getting our gear together, but we'll be hitting the road on Tuesday (May 10th). The plan is to pedal from Southern California to Virginia… or Canada if we don’t feel that 3,200 miles is enough. Barring accidents, failed joints, or break-ups… we’ll get to dip our tires in more than one ocean. We hope to succeed or fail before August, when at least one of us is due for grad school in North Carolina.

Our friends are already lending us a hand.
Before we leave, they’ve made sure that we DON’T GET BIG HEADS, by sharing some predictions about the events that ahead of us…

Dumbest Questions Asked...
Ethan: "You guys are riding bikes, eh?"
Brian: "Are you tired?
Nicole and Charles: "Are you guys from around here?"

Our friends also gave us a few requests of things to take photos of along the way: Amish people, car art, buffalo, someone taller than Forest, cactus, The Alamo, Anne biking on a cell phone, Tumbleweed bigger than Forest, Children under 10 operating a tractor, "The Breaking Point" ("you'll know when you come to it").

We are still taking bets for number of collective pounds lost, most affordable gas sited and cheapest motel room procured (yes, we plan to take a couple of night off from camping).

Tuesday (May 10th) is our first day on the road. The only training we've done so far is eating... a lot. So, for now, we're hoping just to get out of site of the Pacific. We’ll be updating this travelblog as we go, so stay tuned for more photos, maps, and lies.

We’d appreciate comments that you’d like to add to the journal, but we should warn you that all comments that are not funny or flattering enough may be edited. To add comments, just click the view and add comments link below. If you’d prefer to email us directly, use the contact link (below) or email us at forestbaker@hotmail.com or anniekallus@yahoo.com. Cell phone usage will be extremely limited.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Sounds like a blast to me. Road trips are always fun and your planning sounds just like me, at least the lots of eating! Be sure to watch for dogs in the back of pickups!

California Cruisin'
What an amazing - and a little wacky - idea! Have a wonderful time, make sure Forest practices his Spanish, and be sure to stop and smell the roses - or California poppies/ Texas bluebonnets / Georgia peaches. I'm in South Africa right now, but if I cross your path at any time, how about a pint? Niki C - Niki

brave!
Sound like a brave effort to me. Take it slow at first until your thigh mussles really understand what you've decided to do to them. Be safe. Too bad you're not heading up north too, because you really should add more miliage, don't you thik? BTW. Have you read the book, "UltraMarathon Man?" I think it would inspire you. Especially the stuff about being able to sleep while running and having pizza delivered to him on the road. Good tips. Most of all, have fun. - Geoff

idiots
bring sun screen. do you have sun screen? and bug repelant. You will need some bug repelant. Did you bring water? You should have some water in case you get thirsty. Biking can be thristy work. I hope you took the time to learn the appropriate hand signals for turning. Or do you plan to go straight the entire time? When you die, can I have your stereos? I am a huge fan of anonymous posting.

Holy crap, Annebelle! Have an awesome time and good luck to both of you. Keep me updated on your adventures, since all of mine now involve diapers, spit-up and baby babbling. -katie
