After some issues in what was my current job I had to visit the "Silicon Valley" to attend some business, so this was the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the states...San franciso. San francisco known for the architecture, for being an artist refuge, chinese inmigrants, and a jewel of the "Gold fever" is an oportunity of have a good time in. For me my first contact was going from fremont (the other side of the bay south oakland) by car, trying to find and cross bay bridge (a impressive structure that cross the bay) and see this curious city, with their beautifull houses, the embematic golden gate bridge, the fog in the bay, the hills is a city that is a must if you're visiting the states, if you're a Jazz ... read more

San Francisco - a city I've always wanted to visit (from watching every episode of Full House when I was younger?!!)... and it did not disappoint! A beautiful city, very pretty and green, with a beautiful harbour - I guess it reminded me of Wellington, with it's arty culture and steep hills! The beggars on the streets are something that fade away and it is 'all things bright and beautiful' that remain a lovely memory. ... read more

My parents really want me to travel with someone from the program (and I totally agree with them). So, I'm traveling with a girl named Janet (I haven't met her yet, but she's a pre-med 3rd year student from Yale). I'm sure she's a great girl. So together we're going to NYC then to Amsterdam then to Nairobi. I worked it out so I get a whole 24 hours in NYC on the way back home!! YIPEE!! More shopping time for me! Let me know if you guys want anything from the big apple. :)... read more

I have been re-evaluating the wisdom of my itinerary for a couple weeks now (since I've been trying to explain it to the inquirers at WorMar and elsewhere). After flying into Dublin on the 7th and mucking about for a day or two, I'm going to daintily skip to Cologne (Koeln) via a low-cost, intra-European air carrier. Depending on the day, I'll go out and be generally agog and try to sniff out some good dance clubs, as I still be acting a fool for Koeln-based electronic music label Kompakt's releases. After that, it's time to biggity-bust out my Eurail pass and chug along to Berlin just in time for a Stereo Total concert in their hometown. The last time I saw Stereo Total I got too excited, and through a series of poor deci... read more

Although I expected to find him ensconced in some bizarre Gothic manor at some forgotten dead-end high in the Berkeley Hills, Sir Molnar actually resides in a comfortable, well-lit and perfectly sane and modern home just up the street from me. We drank dark Belgian beer and shivered in his backyard as the sun set and he told me of his time in Budapest. He arrove just after the fall of the wall, and there was redonkulous opportunity for a young, energetic native speaker with experience in the capitalist world. Each time Peter alluded to some grand scheme or other, I grew more googly-eyed and unfocused. A wine social in the caves beneath the Buda Hills? Doing it up right in massive, ugly government buildings that had fallen into disuse. The mythical Bloc Party?? Peter was ... read more

Woke up feeling ruph after partying till the wee hours with Chang. Resolved to possibly nap and talk to Pop about the itinerary. He beat me to the punch. Grandpa David is apparently about to depart this world, and I am feeling that familiar disorienting mix of guilt, numbness and distraction that have accompanied the passing of my other two gramps. Your-grandfather-is-dying conversations are uniformly awkward and unpleasant, particularly when you hate telephonic communication as much as I do. The upside is that my tickets are booked and the railpass is on its way. I shudder to think of the jagged cavity left in my modest bank account after those charges book. I am really being diligent about reassuring myself about this leap. It seems to have some calming effect, but I am pacing a lot ... read more

We’ve quit our jobs, packed our bags, and we’re going for a little bike ride ...across the US We're just getting our gear together, but we'll be hitting the road on Tuesday (May 10th). The plan is to pedal from Southern California to Virginia… or Canada if we don’t feel that 3,200 miles is enough. Barring accidents, failed joints, or break-ups… we’ll get to dip our tires in more than one ocean. We hope to succeed or fail before August, when at least one of us is due for grad school in North Carolina. Our friends are already lending us a hand. Before we leave, they’ve made sure that we DON’T GET BIG HEADS, by sharing some predictions about the events that ahead of us… Smallest Town We'll Ride Through...(pop.) Look at him - He's a beaut! After 10 weeks of playing phone tag with Peter Molnar, I finally have a date and time to talk to him about the Old Country. Although I barely know the man, I consider him my best contact in B-P, because his family is networked in to the HU wine industry on several levels. While I don't have any intention of becoming a wine buyer in Eger, it's good to know people who love classy tipple as much as I do. Peter M has a expansive reach, as he has his hands in pies from Buda to Berkeley, from Lake Balaton to Lake County. I may be exaggerating his interests, but in talking to him, I recognized the notes of overcommitment and nuances of frazzle in his voice. His story ... read more
