The others were going horse riding for a couple of hours, so I decided that I would brave the drive and go to The Valley for the day. Whilst 35 doesn’t sound too far, the bendy roads, not to mention some long stretches of road-works, meant that it still took well over an hour to get there. When I got there, boy was it busy. I had to park on the approach to the valley and then walk the rest of the way, but given that walking / hiking is the main occupation in Yosemite, that was not a problem. I went to the Lower Yosemite Fall, which was a very easy walk. Too easy in fact as it was absolutely covered in people - the chances of getting an unobscured view were nonexistent. I decided ... read more

Bishop was quite a quaint little town, but we left in the morning without spending any time to check out what the immediate area had to offer. Bishop didn’t actually seem that far from Yosemite, but the problem was that it was on the opposite side of the park to the town where our hotel was located. For one thing, Yosemite is absolutely huge and for another thing, the roads are narrow, windy and constantly going up-and-down. It took two hours of driving to get from where we went into the park to where we wanted to be. We broke that drive by stopping off a small lake called Tenaya Lake. After being 190 feet below sea-level the day before, this lake was at 9,000 feet above sea-level and our ears had been popping for most ... read more

Drove over to the Yosemite National Park today. WOW!! We started in the Mariposa Grove of the Giant Sequoias. Then we were trying to get to Yosemite Valley so we could look around the museum before checking out the other awesome sights!! There was a LOT of road construction, and of course, it's a 2 lane road, so we were stopped or driving 10 mph quite a bit of the way. During one of the lengthy stops, Glenn got out of the car, and so did the driver in front of us...he told us to be sure to check out Glacier Point, as the view from there was fabulous. We were at the turn for it at the time, but were running short on time, so we headed for the Valley instead. We arrived and went ... read more

So we got up this morning and buttoned up everything again for the trek from San Francisco to Yosemite. Left about noon and ended up here around 5pm. Stopped along the way to adjust mirrors and refuel before heading to the "wilderness". We're in the Chukchansi Indian Casino parking lot tonight. It was a bit frustrating trying to get parked...they didn't have any signs, the place is literally out in the middle of nowhere at the top of a small mountain, so it took us a couple of "trys" to find the rv parking. We drove through Modesto and Merced to get here, so saw lots of almond trees along the way :) As soon as we left the Bay area, it warmed up considerably!! I didn't see the temp when we arrived, but bet it ... read more

I arrived in San Fransisco only two hours after leaving Vancouver. On the same plane was one of my colleagues, and I didn't know she had booked a flight on the same plane. She sat many rows behind me, and we didn't get a chance to chat. The flight was simple but moving onto Sacramento was not. I took the BART train to the other side of the bay to Oakland, where I transfered to another BART train heading north. I got off at Richmond, a town north of Berkeley, then got onto an Amtrak train heading north east to Sacramento. I rolled into Sacramento 9 hours after I left the airport hotel in Vancouver, quite a long day considering how short a trip compared to other trips I've taken. And the change in temperature was ... read more

Geo: 37.7163, -119.665 Today we packed up camp. David and Anna were both in a hurry to get home- I think one had work and the other wasn't feeling well. Galen and I were both still energized and spontaneously decided to stay behind an extra day and then just drive home that night. Since we brought two cars it was totally workable. After seeing the Mist Trail from Glacier Point the day before, he was deadset on hiking it, potato-chip blisters and all. With moleskin on, too. So we headed down to the Valley and the Mist Trail trailhead. Because of this hike, Galen was inspired to do Half Dome with us the following month. =D We even saw the brand-spankin new "Do You Have Your Permit?" for Half Dome signs. They weren't in effect yet ... read more

Geo: 37.7163, -119.665We had planned to ride bikes in the Valley today but it turned out one of them had a flat (we didn't discover that until we got there ofcourse). But first, we woke up, ate breakfast and took an accounting of our injuries. Galen had blisters on both feet the size of potato chips. Anna was covered in mosquito bites. And we were all pretty damn sore. I guess it was just as well the bikes had flats.Instead, we drove up to Glacier Point. It was one of those places I had never been (at least not to memory- probably my parents took me when I was very young) since it was so far removed from the main Valley. But we wanted to do something different, so we took the drive up out of ... read more

Geo: 37.7163, -119.665Our second day, we got out of bed once we forced Galen to get out first and make us coffee. Then we headed down to Yosemite Valley to the Upper Yosemite Falls trailhead. I had hiked it once before with Chris. My siblings all wanted to go up since they'd never done it before, though. I probably should have made sure they were in better shape first but we did all make it up and down without dying of heatstroke! The trail is 7.2miles roundtrip, which doesn't seem too bad until you consider it's pretty much a straight shot up the cliff via switchbacks. With the exception of one flatter portion that lasts all of ten to fifteen minutes, it's all uphill with an elevation gain of 2700ft. It's a 6-8hr roundtrip hike.We started the ... read more

After many days of no Wi-Fi and then my laptop crashing (which to my dismay we had to replace) I am finally back on with news of our travels. I will have to catch you up little by little as we are on the move again tomorrow. After San Francisco we went to Lake Tahoe and I absolutely fell in love with this place. Me, who hates cold weather and snow decided I could endure even that, to be close to this lake. They had a beautiful April up here but it turned cold and snowed several times while we were there. After the snows the sun would come out and all was beautiful again. This lake is the bluest water on the face of the earth. We cruised for 2 hours one day and I've ... read more

Mariposa Thurs 3 June well it looked just like cheek abrasions yesterday - and the solid crash of camera on rock sounded like a lens smashing (but all continued to function to record the gasp-inducing Glacier Point thankfully. However this morning's mirror tells me it is a domestic violence case! and the somewhat blood-weeping grazed pinkie left some blood on the sheet (Warfarin good for nothing but anti-coagulation and bleedin')... read more
