Geo: 37.7792, -122.42Today was mainly spent walking! We caught the Cable Car with the intention of getting off at the top of the windy part of Lombard Street and walking down. Unfortunately for us, we got on the wrong car which dropped us at the bottom of Lombard Street. It is a very long, very steep walk back up to the top! Once we finally reached the top, we then proceeded to walk back down, stopping for photos along the way. Then we continued to walk, and walk, and walk until we reached Coit Tower. We had spent so much time walking there that unfortunately we didn't have time or go up as S & J and the boys had bookings for the night tour of Alcatraz later in the day and we had other things ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42Today was the day for our private tour with Dylan's Tours. First was a wonderful full breakfast in Luques, the Chancellor's restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. Our room rate included a $25 per room per day credit, that just about covered the bill.We were picked up smack on time by Andreas from Dylan's in a large comfortable van that sat all eight of us easily.Andreas was terrific, he had a great knowledge and obvious love of the city which he was happy to share. First he took us to the Mission District where we got out and spent half an hour or so wandering the streets taking photos of all the amazing street art. Luckily we had a beautiful sunny day, even though it was the middle of winter. We then drove through ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42Once we had arrived at Tullamarine Airport we found that check in was surprisingly quick, as we had been unable to check in online for some reason. We had a celebratory glass of bubbles in the Vue de Monde café before boarding the Qantas A380 bound for LAX. The flight went relatively quickly. We had preordered our meals, although the cabin crew seemed unaware of this system, we all ended up with what we wanted. We all got a little bit of sleep before arriving in LAX. Immigration and rechecking our luggage went smoothly and we walked to the terminal for our domestic flight to San Francisco. We had prebooked a private Lori's Shuttle and they were waiting for us. We quickly arrived at our hotel, the Chancellor on Union Square, where we had ... read more

If your daughter lives in London and you live in New Zealand you have to fly to the other side of the world to see her. Of course this is totally worth it, especially with the added bonus of needing to stop off somewhere half way to avoid deep vein thrombosis and the agony of up to 24 hours cooped up in cattle class with a child repeatedly kicking the back of your seat. Our choice of stopover this time was San Francisco because 1. we've never been there, 2. it's a city with so much resonance for baby boomers like us as the home of hippies, free love and nostalgia-laden music and 3. there was a good deal on the flight. I would have liked longer, but when Rhys found out that San Francisco is ... read more

C: It was a relatively short drive down to SF from Bodega Bay and our first stop was the pretty town of Sausilito, just north of the bay on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. From here you can see straight across the bay to the city and after a little meander along the waterside we found lunch with a view, sitting outside in the sunshine eating pizza with SF and the Golden Gate in the background. Particularly nice in December! There was also a guy on the beach doing amazing balancing art with different sized stones and pieces of wood. We then got to drive across the GG bridge and visited the park on the other side. It's a huge park, similar to Central Park in size and shape but the main thing ... read more

Saturday, November 21 Saturday was a busy day, too. I was excited about visiting Alcatraz. To be honest, I really didn’t know much at ALL about Alcatraz—I just knew it used to be a prison, it was on an island, and I knew that people had tried to escape from it. Lol. I woke up probably about 7:30 on Saturday, but Mom was still asleep. I knew she needed it, so I made sure to be extra quiet and just let her sleep however long. It’s not very often that she can sleep later like that…or even get a good night’s sleep in general. I got ready for the day so that by the time she woke up, we’d have a head start. I think she slept til about 9:30, which was great! We didn’t need ... read more

Sunday, November 22 So Sunday morning started REALLY early for us, a little too early. While it may seem like we had visited a lot of places up to this point (and in fact, we had), there were still lots of things to see before we made our way to the airport for our 2:35 flight and 1:30 car drop off. So I had to wake Mom up at a little after 6, and we needed to gather up our belongings and check out of the motel ASAP. Poor thing—when I woke her up, Mom’s first words were “Oh no!” Could it really be true that it was time to get up? She had not gotten enough sleep and was still exhausted from the day before. I had stayed up kind of late on Saturday night, ... read more

The next morning I checked out of the hostel, said goodbye to my Kiwi room mate and took my bike into the outskirts of the city to get repaired by a company contracted to Fuji who I thought may be able to do a free warranty fix on it. My front bearings were becoming an issue again, as well as my chain which was stretched, my rear axel was coming loose and the bike itself just needed some professional help. I couldn't explain why at the time but I just felt good that morning, excited at something that I couldn't perceive. It was like something good was happening at that moment but I wasn't consciously aware of it. As I rode into the town I saw the true face of San Francisco, all the disaffected people ... read more

Thursday, November 19 So my mom and I took a trip out to San Francisco this weekend! I hadn’t been to California since my first-ever trip there in 2004. I had gone to L.A. with the honor society at my community college, and we stayed on the UCLA campus. That was shortly after I had jaw surgery, so I couldn’t even eat solid food while I was there! In fact, I had carefully packed a glass blender in my suitcase for the trip! Haha. But I enjoyed it a lot, and one of these days, I will just drive on over there again, since it’s only like 5 or 6 hours away from where we live now! Mom had never been to California before, believe it or not. We had airline credit that we found out ... read more

Friday, November 20 Friday was a busy day, and I knew it would be because there were so many things on my list to see. We had tickets for a tour of Alcatraz the next day, which would take at least a few hours and probably a lot of Mom’s energy. So I knew that Friday would have to be the day on which we got most of our sightseeing done. Our first stop on Friday morning was to get some breakfast. I had googled the best (but yet fairly inexpensive) places to eat in San Francisco, and Dottie’s True Blue Café popped up. People said that it was the best breakfast in town, so of course I wanted to try it out! We stayed in a motel about 10 miles south of the heart of ... read more
