Geo: 37.7792, -122.42Once we docked at the Auckland pier, we had to wait for clearance from the authority to disembark. It was fun sitting out on the balcony and watching us slowly move into the Auckland Harbor. I could see sailboats to the side. There were 2 other ships that arrived just a head of us - probably our late arrival because of the 2 other luxury cruise lines. We were texting Dad at the same time as we were pulling it. I believe it was 2pm in the afternoon on Friday, and it was 9am on Saturday morning in Auckland. As we filed out of the ship, collected our luggage and started to walk the line for the Taxi ride, a gentleman for the city of Auckland suggested that we take the SkyBus - Bus system with ... read more

San Francisco has been experiencing a lot of rain the past month and today was no exception. We woke up to a steady rain and say that the weather would be rainy and a little windy all day. We woke up kind of early and headed to Denny's for breakfast and then back to the room to get some last minute work done before we leave the country. We decided to walk to Pier 39 and have lunch somewhere there. Since it is raining and San Francisco's winter season, most of the tourist destinations have been really empty and today was no exception at the Pier. There were not many people walking around and it was really nice. We walked to the end of the pier and watched the sea lions for a bit and then ... read more

Drury and I woke up early today for our flight to San Francisco. We found out a resident in our building has started his own car service company so we had one of his drivers pick us up at the building and take us to the airport. We arrived at the airport in plenty of time for our flight and as soon as we sat down at our gate, we both got a notification that our flight was delayed an hour because of traffic in San Francisco. Apparently with the bad weather there they only had two runways working so we had to wait for our flight to get a landing time. We boarded the plane and Drury and I both had Seat 1A and 2A which was very nice as they are window and aisle ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42In 1953, my mom took a teaching job in Hawaii, before it was even a state. On her way to Hawaii, she stayed in San Francisco and recalls having a drink at the "Top of the Mark". The Top of the Mark is a penthouse restaurant at the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel. Located at the highest point of downtown San Francisco, on fog-free days, it has spectacular views of the financial district, Chinatown, North Beach, San Francisco Bay, and especially of Grace Cathedral and Huntington Park. It is has been a popular local destination since its opening in 1939, and has hosted World War II servicemen, along with numerous celebrities and dignitaries, including Doris McCalla. Well, 64 years later, we went by to check it out.(Epilogue: my dad called my mom while ... read more

Geo: 37.7792, -122.42We left Richmond at 7:20 am (Eastern) flew through Houston (yep, the day before the SuperBowl), and landed in San Francisco around 2:00 pm (Pacific). We checked into the hotel and headed to Pier 39; a few blocks from our hotel. Meeting Sean's former roommate, Chase and his fiancée, Ashley, for dinner tonight.(The Houston airport was not crazy. We had no problems meeting our connecting flight, and crowds did not seem large....today.)... read more

San Francisco, USA 25th January Sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay has got to be on everybody's bucket list. We passed under the bridge at midday on a warmish, sunlit Californian day, and docked at a new Pier (27) which was a few hundred yards further out than we had been before. With the iconic Alcatraz island on our port side and the steep streets of the city on the other, it made for a special trip to the berth. San Francisco sits on a hilly peninsula bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Bay,with the waters meeting at the Golden Strait beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. These swirling waters in and around Alcatraz Island shows why there were no recognised escapes from the prison. From our previous walkabout here, long trousers ... read more

Growing up in Indonesia in the early 1990s, my exciting introduction to the United States was mostly defined by American pop culture. I had heard of a place called San Francisco for the first time from Bob Saget’s cheeky Full House - opening with those pretty colorful houses on a hilly landscape by the ocean. Seemed to be a perfect city for me. That was followed by MTV's boy band craze. My fascination with this city was reshaped by 98 Degrees’ ‘Because of You’ video. The boys were definitely pretty, but my interest was definitely the incredible red bridge in the video. At that point, I set my sights on visiting San Francisco. Someday. Fast forward to almost twenty years later: I have visited hundreds of cities on six continents. Now, I have the perfect opportunity ... read more

Arrived in San Francisco Friday around 1pm after a great drive up the coast from Paso Robles. Checked into our hotel, we are staying near the Airport as the accommodation in CBD is so expensive it is unbelievable! Homewood Suites by Hilton is a great place to stay, two bedroom two bathroom for around $330 AUD night, really good value when a hotel room in CBD around $500 a night, they have a great happy hour from 5-7pm Mon-Thurs including food, wine and beer thrown into the price of your room, as Aussies we love this! Definitely need a car here though, unless you have plenty of time they do have a shuttle to the airport then you can get the BART (train) to CBD but very easy to navigate around SFO with car unless the ... read more

Yes. Packed and ready to go. After a full month of nerves around this trip, I'm set. My head is in this. No more fucking around. Hell, I even sprayed my clothes with Premetherin in a perhaps futile attempt to ward off Dengue Fever. No matter; this is the blog where I can hopefully feel free to follow my every bout with flight delays, dysentery, challenges in third world countries, and me developing a hopefully strong and new relationship with an engineering team in Bangladesh. I look forward to a new found joy in encountering people from a so completely different world from me, it breaks me down and brings me back again. Because that's, let's face it, what travel should do. Next post...the departure from San Francisco to Dubai...and then 8 hours later to Dhaka, ... read more
