Universal Studios is hands down the best theme park I have ever been to. Not only are the rides actually fun, but it’s in HOLLYWOOD so we got to see sound stages and sets!! The absolute first thing we did was head to Hogsmeade, the Harry Potter section of the park. I think it’s an exact replica of the village they used in the movie (or is it actually where it was filmed? Can’t seem to find that information anywhere) and it’s so cool!! We saw people lining up for something that didn’t have an obvious purpose, so of course we joined the line. It ended up being for Ollivander’s, the wand shop, where you go in small groups at a time and an actor (ahem, witch) will pick two little kids and get them to ... read more

And so it draws to a close...the long-anticipated 7 weeks of holiday has sadly ended and here we are at LAX waiting to board our flight home...waaahhhh, I don’t wanna! Today was always about Harry Potter (for some of us) and filling the time before our late night departure (for others). Out to Universal Studios this morning and straight to Hogsmead...well, unless you’re seven and you’ve heard your big sister rave on and on and ON about HP for over a year, and absolutely REFUSE to enter...in which case, you go to Minions instead. I’m told it was everything she could have hoped for - the Forbidden Journey was great and the wand selection process even more exciting as she got picked out to demonstrate how a wand selects its owner...but she went against the magic ... read more

There’s nothing quite like Disney for the quality and fun it delivers, and the last few days have not disappointed. We even managed a side trip to Knott’s Berry Farm but finished off the Disney days with the light show Fantasmic - a fitting end to a great time! Highlights have included: - The Cars ride - Disney quality and class at its best - a combination of interactive animation and the thrill of a car chase - the Incredicoaster - fun, fast and upside down - Soarin’ Around the World - for a virtual trip over some of the world’s great landmarks - Big Thunder - voted family favourite ride for everyone’s pure enjoyment. Our day at Knott’s was a welcome break from the queues of Disney, with us all enjoying the pony ride and ... read more

The thrills, the spills, the near-death experiences, the brown pants and the shut eyes...yes, we’ve survived the LA freeways!! After that, the rides of Disney seemed quite tame, definitely less chance of dying! We decided to treat the girls to one last lesson in the marvels of science and stop by Hoover Dam in our way out of Vegas. Geoff remembered a small snippet of one of the few lectures he attended...something about cooling techniques for the curing of the concrete in the dam (I was clearly at the pub for that one)...they were suitably wishing we would shut up. Then we hit the road. Longest and scariest drive so far, and quite a lot of holiday traffic...so glad it happened at the end rather than beginning of the trip! But we made is safely, dropped ... read more

This is a quick (at least my original intention was to make it quick) addendum to the previous post. Because I'm now Car-Less, and because my flight departs from LAX, I and my three ridiculously heavy bags (plus my backpack and hiking boots) had to be transported from my San Diego son's house to my other son's house in Long Beach, which is closer to LAX. Therefore, we coordinated a rendezvous last Sunday for brunch at a convenient midway point--San Clemente. On Sunday morning, because I have very helpful sons, my San Diego son happily shlepped all of my bags into the back of his car for the trip up to said rendezvous in San Clemente. We (San Diego son, my daughter-in-law, my granddaughter, and I) had a lovely drive up the coast. We arrived early, ... read more

Mom: Day 1 was spent flying, handling the "great car rental debacle of '19", then the harrowing ride to our Airbnb. We were both exhausted and konked out early, although we did enjoy some quiet time on the deck taking in the beautiful view! We were torn between 2 places for our L.A. stay--a modern apartment in a high rise in downtown L.A. and the "Handlebar Treehouse." We chose the latter and clearly made the right choice. Sam and Jason have been fabulous hosts (gave Justin his first Twinkie!) and even shared their dog Mac with us! I had a good bit of work to do today, but barely feels like work with this view and a dog by my side. We ventured out to "see all the stars as we walk down Hollywood Blvd." I ... read more

Day 21: Universal Studios We started the morning bright and early to get ready for the day at Universal Studios. We caught an Uber there then brought the tickets. Dad got us the express tickets which means that we get to skip the normal line and go in the express lane but you can only use these tickets once at every ride, after that you have to go in the normal lane. Once we got in the theme park we split up Bella and mum went together because they like the calm rides and not the scary one. And dad and I went to together to go on a few scary ones. The first ride dad and I went one was a simulator Transformers ride. At one point we jumped off a skyscraper which was quite ... read more

Day 23: Farewell LA hello Hawaii On our last morning in LA I headed out early for breakfast at one of Delia’s suggestions The Butcher Daughter and was not disappointed. It was probably my favourite cafe so far with its scrumptious vegan food and seriously nice decor and vibe. It was on Abbot Kinney Blvd and there was a fabulous market being set up. Knowing how much my family like all things vegetables 😆I told them to come and meet me. That gave me the chance to try a juice sampler much to the amusement of everyone. It was hard to choose only 4 juices from the incredible selection!! We then had a wander along the market before heading back to the bungalow to pack. I really wasn’t ready to leave and would love more time ... read more

Day 20 - Disney day We left our apartment bright and early so that we could get through the gates of Disneyland Park at a reasonable time. We were through and ready for our first ride by 9am. First up we visited Tomorrowland and tackled: the Buzz Lightyear ride; Star Tours; the Finding Nemo submarine; and Autopia. Autopia allowed Zoe and Bella to show us their driving skills for the first time - not bad either! Then to Fantasyland where Bella was in her element: Pinocchio’s Daring journey; Snow White’s scary adventure; Sleeping Beauty’s castle; Dumbo the flying elephant; Mr Toad’s wild ride; the Storybook Land canal Boat ride; “its a small world” boat ride (and no I cant get that tune out of my head); and Bella’s absolute favourite, the Casey Jr Circus train. We started the morning at 5:30 to get ready to hop on the train. The Uber picked us up at 6 and we got on the train at 6:30. The train ride was about 3 and a half hours. When we got to New York we got an Uber to the airport. At the airport we waited in a lounge and then got on the plane. When the plane landed we got an Uber to the house. When we arrived at the house in Venice Beach and we looked around and then went for a walk on the beach. The beach was really nice and had los of palm trees and lots of shops. On the beach we got ice cream, I got the chocolate ice cream with a vanilla swirl and chocolate chip cookie dough. ... read more
