Los Angeles, USA 24th January LA is one of the worlds largest metropolitan areas in the World. The area extends to over 452 sq miles, and the neighbouring communities are linked by six and eight lane highways. You cannot do justice to a city like this in a day and the trips offered on board reflected this. The map issued showed the vast distances you would have to cover to see some of the sights and shopping areas on offer. For instance, Disneyland was 28 miles from the ship, Santa Monica 17 miles and central. LA is about 21 miles. Everything is done on huge scale, we sailed to our berth in San Pedro. The container port is huge as is the cruise terminal. It an take quite a number of cruise ships in any one time and ... read more

Geo: 34.0533, -118.245I never realised Los Angeles was so huge. The county itself is massive with lots of different areas which are small cities in themselves and all merge into the main city. It is not a city you can walk around in a day and you certainly need a car if you are going to see anything at all. We were very fortunate to stay with friends in West Hills, one of the suburbs in the North west of the county. Our wonderful hosts kindly drove us all around the place. Poor things had to wait ages at the airport as it took about 3 hours from when the plane landed to getting out of the airport. Be warned. The queues for passport control were the longest we had seen anywhere in the world. On ... read more

We left our lovely Skagit Bay this morning, with a full moon setting behind Hope Island and a temperature of 20 degrees.... The Cascade and the Olympic Mountains were snow-covered, and Mt Rainier was magnificent from the plane. We flew from Seattle to Los Angeles, and checked into our hotel in the early evening. Getting to the hotel was not easy. We called the hotel and asked for a pickup. We were told to look for a white van marked "Comfort Inn" Shortly, a white van marked "Comfort Inn" pulled up. We got in, and headed out into rush hour traffic. As we finally neared the hotel, the other passengers were wondering if the hotel was actually open, since they had gotten an email informing them that it had become a Quality Inn. We had received ... read more

There are any number of people who have a vision of southern California being warm all year around. In part, we have Hollywood movie producers to thank for that as they always show women in scantily clad clothing no matter the time of year. California locals laugh at tourists when they show up during the LA winter expecting to wear t-shirts and flip-flops. While an LA winter is no reason to pack the snow boots, you need to be prepared and dress appropriately. Layering is the key. Fortunately, we’ve lived in CA enough years to know this so once we bought our Rose Bowl tickets we made plans to bring a proper coat and gloves back from Florida when we were there for the Christmas Holiday. Driving before the break of dawn toward Pasadena, we focus ... read more

Geo: 34.0533, -118.245Tuesday, January 3rd 2017Holy crow! We slept until 10:30. I think not only were we very tired when we went to bed, but we are starting to relax. First things first, coffee. Unlike many of my friends, I don't mind hotel room coffee...caffeine is caffeine.Once we're a bit more awake and ready to go, Jeff and I head out to find food. With no destination in mind we walk several blocks up the hill from our hotel, then over a block and down the next street. We find the "San Pedro Cafe." which turns out to be a gem! We can tell it is a local place because people greet the waitress by name and it has a neighborhood feel about it.Jeff ordered the vegie scramble with sliced tomatoes and I had the same ... read more

Geo: 34.1183, -118.3Peter was working so we three drove 45 min to the Griffith Observatory lookout, up in the Hollywood hills. A beautiful day and half of LA had the same idea, so the traffic and parking was diabolical. Still, we had a good visit that included a show in the planetarium.... read more

After a very very bumpy ride all the way from NZ to LA we arrived at our hotel opposite Disneyland and after Jeremy and the girls had a swim we went and spent the afternoon and evening at Downtown Disney looking at all the themed shops and having a meal. We are here, and the excitement of Holly and Ella is very contagious so we are all excited, looking forward to the next 2 days exploring Disneyland. I have been blown away by this fantasy world that Walt Disney created. Amazing. Many rides, screams and yells later, the nice day turned to rain in the evening and we have been taken a bit by surprise by how cold it has been once the sun disappears. One of the plus's when coming here pre Christmas is that ... read more

We celebrated Thanksgiving early here in Banos. My Brit friend, Karl, asked me way back in October if Shana & I were planning to do a turkey dinner this year, so that planted the seed. Since I'd be in the states for Thanksgiving Thursday, we gave thanks together the Sunday before. Shana hosted at her house and I did the coordinating. Early in the week we took a drive up to Ambato (about an hour) to buy the bird (they're so expensive here...I paid over $40 for a 15 pounder). In addition to bringing a side dish, everybody kicked in a few bucks so with 18 guests we covered poultry costs! It was such an interesting and diverse group of people -- 4 Ecuadorians, an American married to a Thai gal, another married to a mexicana, ... read more
