Week 3 In week 3 I started off with a karaoke night with a group of people, it was a lot of fun and I even stood on stage and did a song. No matter how bad you were, you got a standing ovation and everybody sang along. The mother in the family is a French teacher in a school in Los Angeles and she’s asked me to help her out by grading papers and logging them into the data system of the school. This is very useful because I get a taste of what will be my job later on. We went out for dinner in a restaurant a little down the road and it was really nice to have a family dinner. It’s so different from the ranch and I really enjoy it here. ... read more

Alright Friends, We are at less than a month away from the trip so it is time to start writing about this crazy journey. I figured it was time to start this posting of the journey that Jennifer and I are taking. As you can see on the map with this entry we are taking the train up to the Pacific Northwest where we will be spending time in Vancouver and Seattle before returning to Los Angeles on the train. We will be gone about 10 days and have exciting things like an ATV tour in Whisler, we will be visiting of course Starbucks and the space needle and the Markets of Seattle. So lets get started...shall we... The Equipment We will be traveling in an Amtrak Roomette (See pictures) sleeper. This allows us to have ... read more

Getting back in the saddle: It’s that time of life again. I’ve decided to take another multi-country trip. Though I don’t plan to physically circumnavigate the globe again, I do plan on hitting a good number of countries over the next 3+ months. I’m hoping to take some of the lessons from my last trip. This time I got a friend to rent my place for a few months. I also have credit cards that don’t have international fees. Most importantly I switched to T-Mobileand get free text messages, unlimited 2G data, and $0.20 phone calls if I’m not on wifi. On wifi it’s as if I’m in the US. This is a huge difference over the last time, as I was constantly jumping into coffee shops or McDonalds’ to check my email or Facebook. Back ... read more

The end of the holiday has arrived and it is time to fly home today. The flight was in the afternoon again, which is late enough not to be in a hurry but too early to do anything particular with the day. Hence it is the first day that we have been able to get out of bed late and take it reasonably slowly. We have had another email back from the San Francisco Transit people in response to our complaint, so hopefully that means that we can sort-out mugged-off #2 following that very short but expensive ride on the cable car. We put the TV on for the local LA breakfast show. It was the usual nondescript, low key nonsense, but there was a report live from Hermosa Beach on the national lifeguard championships. That ... read more

We woke-up this morning still absolutely certain that we could not face the freeways again for another day, so today we planned to get to the Downtown area by the Metro Rail. Why not? We've done the Tube in London and the Subway in New York so we know how these things work. As we eventually managed to work out in New York, we first needed to buy a 'Tap Card' and then charge it with credit. No problem there. To get to Downtown, we had to take the Green Line to Willowbrook / Rosa Parks and then change to the Blue Line. Also, no problem there. The Green Line was actually quite nice. Then we got on the Blue Line. After Redondo Beach, Hollywood and La Crescenta, the Blue Line was a great way to ... read more

Today we were to do the inevitable family thing and visit the Universal Studios. Given that that meant driving all the way back up to Hollywood again, we were beginning to question the logic of staying at Redondo Beach. Whilst it is a nice, safe place to stay, it is not exactly convenient for most of the places we wished to visit. When we met our friend and his family yesterday they had advised to get to Universal early and cover the Harry Potter ride and the Studio Tour before the crowds build up and the queues start to get out of hand. We hence got down to breakfast as soon as it opened and hit the freeways as early as we could. I know that we have only been in Los Angeles for three days, ... read more

To our dismay we looked out of the window in the morning and it appeared that the cloud has been following us from San Francisco. The sky was drab and grey and not what we were expecting from August in the city that brought the world Bay Watch. Not that it could make the early morning view from our hotel any more depressing. We watched a bit of the Olympics coverage whist we were getting ready for the day. Needless to say it was focused around the American athletes (but then I suppose any Americans on holiday in the UK will be making a similar complaint) although the plucky Brits did get a mention or two. For our first full day in LA we planned on going to Hollywood, starting with the sign. My daughter had ... read more

Before leaving Carmel, we thought we would have a look at the Carmel Mission, which was clearly the most historic building in the area. Unfortunately there was a funeral taking place, so it would have been completely inappropriate to do the tourist thing and stroll round taking selfies and the like. Finally it was time for that long drive south to Los Angeles. We decided to take the "California Route 1" coast road as that would definitely be more enjoyable than some nondescript freeway. That was definitely a good idea, although the winding roads started to make us all feel a bit green after a while. There were lots of "Vista Points" along the way to stop for views, although a lot of those views were of cloud and mist. The weather is definitely not on ... read more
