This little AirBnB in W. Tucson is lovely. The bed comfortable, the area so quiet and full of birds. We had our scrambled eggs on toast outside on the patio and listened to the funny little Gambel’s quail, who run around in the underbrush and hop up onto walls or cactuses with ease. They can’t sing without bobbing their little topknots. As they don’t adopt savings time in Arizona, it gets light very early. We had about a 15 min drive to Saguaro National Park West, and stopped at the Gates Pass viewpoint – you can see all the way to the wide open Sonoran Desert from there. We arrived before the Park opened at 9 and had a lovely walk outside the Visitor’s Center. Early really is the best time for the birds. Then we ... read more

We had a great final day in Mexico, ending it with one of the best meals I've ever had. We had dinner at the fishing port at Los MTZ, a family owned place with roots in Oaxaca...We had spotted sea bass, cooked on the grill, along with garlic shrimp and other delights... This morning, Bill and I went to the beach where I ran and swam in the tide pools. Walter fixed a greek omelet for us and we were on our way north again....I hated to leave Mexico, but we'll be back soon, hopefully. Puerto Penasco is known as "Arizona's beach" and the town fills up with Americans and some Mexicans every weekend. As we drove back towards the border, there was a steady stream of cars, RVs, trucks pulling dune buggies, and an occasional ... read more

We didn't sleep well after seeing a message from Microsoft just before turning out the lights. It was a notification that a hacker from Moscow had logged into his account. He reported it, but wasn't sure what else to do... Once we were up, we saw a note reminding us that the car had to be moved to the opposite side of the street for cleaning before 9:00am. Char and Jose had already for their teaching jobs. Bill went to look for a parking place but had no luck, so we decided to load up the car and I would go for a run on the beach, instead of in the neighborhood. We drove to beach where the predicted storm had already hit and the sand was blowing hard, so no run and no swim...The temperature ... read more

The Painted Desert is located in Concho Arizona known for its diverse colors such as shades of blueish purple and the usual badlands red rock. I enjoyed my drive and hikes into the colored hills. The Petrified Forest dates back about 225 million years ago of fallen fossilized trees in the Triassic period. The once wooden trees are now made of mostly solid quartz with layers of colors. ... read more

In early January 2022, Anne and I journeyed to southern Arizona for some long delayed hiking in an area we had been to twice before and enjoyed visiting very much. This time we took it fairly easy with no terribly difficult hikes and may have actually learned a thing or two about the history of the area. We flew into Tucson early on a Saturday afternoon and drove to Wilcox where we checked into our motel. With the pandemic still raging, the Delta variant in full force, and the Omicron variant just getting started, we ate breakfast and most evening meals in our room, either getting microwave stuff from a grocery or take out from a restaurant. Lunch was usually a sandwich or snacky stuff on the trail. On Sunday, we drove to Cochise Stronghold in ... read more

Early start to the day, up and having first cup of coffee at 5:30. Kitty is fed and seems well rested and ready for the adventure to begin. I am very much out of practice of the blog post. With Covid our trips have been short and frankly often when recovering from an eye surgery. This is our first real vacation in 2 years. Hopefully, it is a trip back to normal travel again. We already have 3 trips planned for 2022. Since I am a bit rusty on my blogging routine and I was very tired last night, there are some things I failed to mention. First, this trip has been in the making for 3 years. It was first scheduled for Christmas 2018, but 3 weeks before that trip I broke my ankle and ... read more

The travel day is always the worst day of a vacation. This is even truer when you are traveling with your beloved cat. We were up at 4:30 to catch our 9:45 flight and all started well, Tarragon didn’t even fight to much getting in his carrier. One of the many great things about living in Providence is that the airport takes about 10 minutes to check in and get through security (even if we didn’t have TSA pre-check). Typically, when flying with Tarragon it takes a bit longer because he has to go into a special room so they can take him out of the carrier and run it through the x-ray machine. In providence that only takes about 10 extra minutes, unlike the 30 to 40 in Newark. The flight was pretty good, a ... read more
