I got out of the tent and started walking... barefoot... Now, it's Alaska and barefoot is not the usual mode. But it was June and the sun was out, just topping the mountains and filling the beach. The light was low and the shadows long. I walked the beach and spent a lot of time watching for pointy bits... but oh the tracks. Bear tracks, raven tracks, wolf tracks and gull tracks. Took a zillon photos and figured that if nothing else happened photographically that weekend I'd be happy... As we sat at the edge of the grass watching over the beach and bay... a lone wolf walked across the sand to the river mouth. Looking in our direction once in a while but not particularly concerned. Down to the water, looking. Then back towards us ... read more

Damp cool weather continues, with strong winds blowing off the water and low clouds hanging over the mountains. We left Homer and drove back through Soldotna and stopped at Fred Meyers for a repair kit for the tent. We have a small hole in the boot that goes around the hatch. The scenery today was mountains and clouds dampened with showers. We arrived in Seward, which we found to be a quaint port town. There was a cruise ship at the docks and lots of other boats including site-seeing boats that take you to see wildlife and glaciers. We had lunch in town and then spoke to a ranger at the National Parks Office about seeing Kenai National Park. We have been trying to determine if we want to take a boat out of Seward or ... read more

After walking through the town and driving down to the beach, we left Kenai and headed south for our next stop, Homer. We drove through Kenai Landing and down the shore on the Kalifronsky Beach Road. Once back on the Sterling Highway, we saw cars and trucks and campers on the beach below the bluff we were on. We turned around to check it out. At the entrance to the beach road was a tent city. It looks like these native people live here permanently. A little native village called Ninilchik (pronounced Ni-NILL-chick) is on the side road that leads to the beach. On the beach there were hundreds of people clamming at low tide. Some drive their ATVs onto the mud flats. With the debris that lay around some of the campers, it looks like ... read more

So after a 3hr flight from Seattle I finally arrive in Alaska. My taxi driver takes me to my hostel in Anchorage, along the way he cracks open what looks like a can of beer...after seeing the horified look on my face he explains in broken English, that it is actually an energy drink! Upon depositing me outside the hostel he proceeds to give me his mobile phone number. I'm not actually sure if he is trying to pick me up or wants more taxi work! The hostel is fine and full of Eastern European's. The guy at the reception recommends a place to eat in town called 'Humpe's' Un beknown to me this is the start of Alaska's sense of humour with names. I am sharing a room with Linda on my trip...she has already ... read more

Sorry about the interuption folks, had to go off and cook dinner for the clan! Where was I ? We travel up to the Artic Circle, following the pipeline which travels almost 1000 miles above ground traversing along the Dalton Highway - this leads up to the Artic Ocean....except you cannot go to the ocean without going on a tour of the oilfields as it is restricted. By now we have bush camped for 4 days without a shower.....I think my clothes are about to walk off by themselves. The tour of the oilfields turns out to be the worst tour I have been on, besides being a great tourist rip off by BP, the guide didn't know his left from his right. He had the most monotone voice, which combined with being in the cold ... read more

Anchorage is a bowl surrounded by mountains, except for the water of Cook Inlet. It is a beautiful city, the largest in Alaska. In the morning we were greeted in the campground by Arnold and Peggy, the couple from Saskatchewan who we haven’t seen since Whitehorse. When we left the campsite, we checked out some fishermen in Ship Creek, very near our campsite as we heard there were salmon running there. We also drove out to Earthquake Park which commemorates the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake which measured 9.2 on the Richter Scale. It devastated a large area of the coast from Anchorage all the way down the Kenai Peninsula. Alaska has approximately 30 earthquakes every day. Fortunately most are 3.0 or less. There is a website that shows a map of where the quakes were and ... read more

On the Parks Highway we drove south toward Anchorage. There were spots to see Denali along the highway, but with low hanging clouds there was no chance of seeing any mountain tops today. One very interesting spot along the way, was the Hurricane Gulch Bridge. The bridge is 550 feet long and stands 260 feet above the creek below. It was a long way down as we stood on the span and gazed at the small creek meandering it’s way through the gulch. We passed a tragic scene along this highway. A motorcycle lie off to the side of the road and a blanket covered the driver. How sad that some family will soon get that dreaded phone call. God bless them. We took a side trip to Talkeetna, an old-time small Alaska town that has ... read more

Our cruise itinerary was departure Vancouver 24 May 4.45pm through the Seymour Narrows, 25 May pilots disembarked and we continued on for 1 day at sea passing the Canadian boarder to the USA at 10.30pm. Arrived at Juneau Alaska on 26 May - we were in the Pacific Ocean that night, the Captain said when in the Ocean expect a bit of Motion which we did, 20 knot winds and fog. I didnt sleep but Barry did. Tuesday 27 May at Skagway - you will note that I have spelt Skaguay in two different ways but I think we are meant to write it with a 'w' but in the town it is written with a 'u'. In Skagway we took the White Pass Railway to the Summit which was another neat train ride - photos ... read more

Tuesday 27th May 2008 Up at 6.30 after breakfast back the airport with G & L. booked in and flew to Gustavus at 10am on very small plane( 4 + pilot) approx 20 min flight, stunning views. Felt like a bee on the breeze. Gustavus- flat- disheveled, but very peaceful. People wave and say hello. The Gustavus Inn were we are staying is an old house and we are on the third floor in the 'Swallows Nest'. Went for a walk to were the boats launch and then back for a big lunch. One guy at lunch has been coming here for years and he had gone out and picked mushrooms so we had those with our luch also. Its like staying in someones house. Off for a bike ride, went to the library to check ... read more

Monday 26th May 2008 Alarm went off at 3am (how did that happen?) got up at 5.30am. Packed up and walked to the ferry to cross to the airport. Ketchikan has an agreement with the federal government for them to build a bridge from the mainland to the airport , which is on an island. But for 40 years they have been waiting for this to happen. So you have to pay $5 each to cross on the ferry which takes all of 3 minutes, but its the only way you can get to the airport. Over we go to wait. Were very hopefull at a couple of points as once they called us but that was to unlock Mikes bag to search it and the second time they called "Fitzgerald, party of 2" we thought ... read more
