i have been house/animal (1 blue/gold macaw, 2 african greys, 1 golden lab, 1 shepherd, 4 assorted fish) sitting for a couple of friends that flew off to vegas to exchange nuptials. silly people left me with keys to a riding lawn mower. i have not driven one in these 44 years and it showed. i didn't do to bad to get it started (despite the perfunctory and half listened to verbal instructions-and the lack of manual which i'm sure to have ignored anyway), even having to jump start it as the battery was dead (that F250 started her right up-just kidding stevie). the only problem, and this might be considered huge if one is bothered by the price of gas, was that i drove for some minutes before i realized i wasn't actually cutting anything. ... read more

Happy Birthday being sung by grandsons, is how Grampy started his day. Michelle called at 7 am to wish her Dad a Happy Birthday along with the boys. The Old Man turns 60 today. He looks pretty good to me for an old coot. It was great to sleep-in this morning. After breakfast we hiked to the Visitor’s Center and took a short bus ride to the Dog Sled Demonstration that the rangers put on. We were able to walk through the open kennels and pat any dog that wanted us to. The demonstration was interesting, the dogs were eager to run and it was pretty cool. After lunch at the campsite we took another hike, this time to the Nenana Canyon. White-water rafting boats were along side the swift moving river below having just ended ... read more

This morning was brilliant sunshine. Today’s aim was to drive the long trip back to Anchorage including some stops of interest before flying out late tonite and overnite for Denver then immediately onto Los Angeles where we are stationed for a whole day before the really long flight home. Today’s features included two wayside stops to see Mt McKinley and a chance black bear sighting. Both Denali viewing points were at either end of the Denali State Park which is another special area but run by the state of Alaska as opposed to the national park run by the federal government. Both viewing points were spectacular because we had a sunny day and clouds were almost non existent. The South site was interesting because we were high up on a cliff overlooking a vast wide river ... read more

Low temperature hit freezing overnight and it was nice to be able to run the van for heat. We spent the night in the wilderness on the Haul Road with just one other camper, a Japanese man on a bicycle with a small tent. He really didn’t speak much English. The only building here was an outhouse and the biker kept his food sacks in the building to keep it away from the wildlife overnight. We ate a banana for breakfast and heated water in a container that works off the 12-Volt plug and we made a cup of coffee for each of us. We drove out the sixty miles of the Dalton Highway and then onto the paved roads back toward Fairbanks. At the Arctic Circle Trading Post we received a certificate that we had ... read more

Today’s critter sightings- we finally caught up with some Snowshoe hares near one of the currently unused winter ranger stations, this one was not far from Savage River and the Parks Road in the Denali Wilderness. This is a log cabin in the bush. Outside there are half a dozen wood dog kennels. The outside window battens of the cabin have long nails protruding thru to the outside to stop nosy grizzlies from taking a further interest. It was near here, amongst the very soft under foot, sphagnum moss undergrowth that we saw a few of our hares and got some pictures. Up at Savage River we went for a walk and found X critter (don’t know his name at the moment - you try and guess for us). He was eating grass near the bank ... read more

Joe, a real great guy at the campground worked all night and got the plumbing fixed which allowed us to take showers before heading up to the Arctic Circle. A little hesitant about what the road conditions will be like, we are “going for it.” Leaving Delta Junction we were greeted by several moose on the side of the road who were more than happy to pose for us as they ate their breakfast. As we drove north we arrived at the North Pole. We looked everywhere for Santa but could only find a statue of him. We did see Santa’s reindeer and Dave (Papa, Grampy, Grandpa Dave) actually talked to Rudolph. The North Pole has candy cane light poles and sign posts and we saw Santa’s House. It is a pretty cool place. I saw ... read more

Dawson City Ferry runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week except for Wednesday when it closes for maintenance from 5 to 7 am. We didn’t arrive until shortly after 7 am and we were on the second ferry out. Going west from Dawson this ferry provides free service to West Dawson and the US via the “Top of the World Highway.” In Canada the road is mostly paved, but with a lot of gravel breaks. The views from the top of the world were consistently spectacular. Customs was unusual. It was on a dirt road, one lane each direction with a metal building in the middle and two log cabins off to our right. The border is open for 12 hours a day from 8 am until 8 pm Alaska Time. We gained another ... read more

Well last night’s sleep was interesting, it never got really dark and twilight was probably a better way to describe the 4 or so hours of night. This morning we caught the 10:30 am 6 hr return bus into the Denali Nat Park and almost immediately, critters started appearing. First a gray wolf (gray to white) trotted on the road just in front of our bus for about 50m before catching a small rodent and disappearing into the grassy undergrowth - we know wolf sightings are quite rare so what a start to today. Then we came across a mother grizzly with two 2 year old cubs (they are all light brown to cream coloured) and she also trotted along in front on the road for a while, soon after that we met up with a ... read more

Our time in Victoria was great, a very warm and dry compared to Vancouver. It was good to stop for two nights, do some washing and just re-sort all our stuff. Victoria was a great place to visit, we took a sea plane flight over the town and just went for a wander around the shops. There are numerous little boat taxis in the harbour so got a ride back to our hotel. We had dinner in a pub in town one night, it had a great band which Barry and another guy enjoyed until very late. We had a great farewell dinner in Victoria to say goodbye to our great tour director, he was a bit overcome. I think he would be rapt with the amazing tip he received. We left Victoria and back to ... read more
