Today me and my Dad went to the Anchor River on the Kenai Peninsula to fish for salmon. The night before we read through the regulations, and found the river is only open for fishing a few days a year so we wondered if it was going to be busy. When we got there, there were heaps of people on the river! Then we drove down near the river mouth were there were a few pools with a bit more space. We saw a lady called Julie catch a King (Chinook) salmon about 20 lb! Then later on we saw another man called Bill land a King salmon that weighed 17 lb! Those fish were caught in the same pool so I went and had cast in there and about ten minutes later I got ... read more

Left just after 8 AM today thinking that we could stop by the Post Office to buy stamps, and then go to Rec Services for info on the Military camp in Seward and get any info they might have on reservations for the National Park campground at Denali. Well, the Army has really changed !! Rec Services didn't open until 9 and the Post Office didn't open until 10. So we just decided to get going to Homer. Before we got out of Anchorage, the road was badly rutted giving me a lot of trouble keeping the car in the lane. So we pulled of to see if anything was wrong with the rig. Couldn't find anything, so just increased the tire pressure on the trailer whells from 34 psi to 41 psi. It seemed to ... read more

We left the campground before 8:30 and went to the base outdoor rec office, it was not open until 9. We went to the base post office for stamps, not open until 10. So we just headed on toward Homer. South of Anchorage we drove on the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet. It was another beautiful drive with snowy mountains and churning waters. At Cooper Landing we were awed by the beautiful blue-green waters of Kenai Lake and the Kenai River. The water is tinted by suspended ultra-fine glacial silt. At Soldotna we finally found a post office and bought stamps and mailed cards. We went more than 3 miles up a road in Ninilchik to a campground, only to turn back after finding out that they charge $10 for a shower. We ... read more

By Melisse. Wildlife abounds in Alaska!! Seeing moose, bear, eagles, cranes, and many other land animals is a common, though thoroughly exciting, occurrence. The waters are amazingly full with an abundance of fish, whales, otters, crabs, and lots of other sea life, even after being heavily fished for a very long time. For many (and perhaps most) people in Homer, and other parts of Alaska, fishing is a way of life. And for some, hunting is as well. These people don’t buy their meat at the supermarket, and thus they do not support industrial meat agriculture - chicken, beef, pork, etc. Some don’t participate in the act of killing animals to eat but do choose to eat meat. They may barter goods or services in exchange for the bounty of those who do. It is an ... read more

Mother Nature made our departure from home this time more exciting. After an incredibly mild winter, we were hit with several large storms in Homer. Like white-out, gale-force winds, my car is buried for the next month type storms. Our wonderful house-sitters, Oliver & Danielle, pitched in gallantly as we dug out and schlepped our stuff to the truck, which fortunately was parked close to the road and not trapped at our house. We had mixed feelings as we drove away...happy for ourselves to be escaping and bad for them to be left behind. We hope they'll enjoy the hibernation time in our cozy cabin with Alfred, Bandit & Clyde to keep them company. ;-) The drive wasn't as eventful as we feared it might be. The forecasts for blizzard warnings and 85 mph winds had ... read more

After taking a couple days to dry out and catch up on some rest, we headed to Homer Alaska. Homer is known for the "Spit", a piece of land that sticks out five miles from the peninsula, and the Halibut derby. We found a great camping spot on the beach at the end of the spit. We camped right on Kachemak Bay with a view of 5 glaciers across the bay. The first night we walked along the shore and saw a sea otter floating a few feet away. We had dinner on the beach and enjoyed the view. The next day, we took a sightseeing cruise. First we went to Gull island. There is a large rookery there with horned and tufted puffins, red-faced cormorants, several kinds of gulls and bald eagles. The boat took ... read more

Following on from the Alaska Interior we can categorically state that the weather has got no better. It has been raining pretty much constantly since we got here. Valdez was enshrouded in clouds and therefore the spectacular scenery of snowcapped mountains was not seen. From here we took a ferry on the marine highway to Whittier which again was on a rainy day with no views. Bugger!!. We did however had one day of perfect weather when we took a fjord / glacier / whale watch in Seward. This was spectacular as we were in a small boat that could get close up the the wall of the North West Glacier. Hearing the crack of ice as it moves is great. We also saw ice falls into the surrounding sea. We had our first encounter with ... read more
