Friday August 10, 2007 We met our tide pool and hiking tour at the Homer dock at 7:15 am and left by 7:30 am so we could catch the low tide. We went to an island on Peterson Bay across from Homer. There was a negative low tide, which is good for tide pool walks because the water’s lower than normal. The sun was shining (again!) and the breeze was brisk on the boat. It took us about 30 minutes to get to the island. Our tour was conducted by a nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to educate people about the sea environment and ecology of the Homer area. The group included a father and his 6 year daughter from Anchorage and a middle-aged woman, her grown son (worked for BLM in Valdez) and her ... read more

Thursday August 9, 3007 Another sunny clear day and as we traveled down the road we saw even better views of the Volcanoes so we stopped at a roadside pulloff and took more photos. While we were waiting for clouds to pass the peaks we talked with a group of men from Louisiana on a church mission trip and a woman from Poland who was bicycling from Anchorage to Homer. We stopped at an old Russian fishing village named Ninichek. It was supposed to be photogenic and it was. Homer is on the “halibut fishing capitol of the world”. It is on the southwestern coast of Alaska on the Kakamak Bay. It has close proximity to the Gulf of Alaska. It’s famous for “the spit”, a long narrow piece of land that juts into the bay. ... read more

Its only been a year since I started to plan this trip and I have been packed since December. Of course I have brought too many things and I am already regretting it. The laptop is a burden as is the book bag with my sandwich Spanish lessons in it. Michelle was a great help and she came into the terminal with me …after we finally found the right one! There is no designation for SkyWest and the number of people I spoke to had never heard of it. At the last minute I found out that I have a maximum of $500 in claims for meds. Who knew this? And I have bought almost $1500 worth of meds to last me for ten months: little white pill, malaria, Dukarel for e-coli and other disgusting ... read more

Dave even said so. But, alas, our travels are over for a bit. After 24 hours of airplanes/airports, a day and a half in Anchorage (thanks Nick and Jess!!!) and a 4-hour drive, we arrived back home to our wee little house. Our lovely little four-legged friends who live with us are back too. The house looked great and all seemed well. We're still working on getting unpacked and getting the road cleared of snow, and it's COLD! Only 3 degrees with -15 degree windchill as I write this, fortunately all toasty warm inside with a cup of good REAL coffee (sorry, Nescafé). But nonetheless, we are happy to be home. Home Sweet Homer. Thanks to you all for reading and following our travels. Until next time, Kevyn and Dave (who still really like each other) ... read more

Hi All, I'm home now, recuperating! It's amazing to see Blaise walking around, and Sam seems older, too! It's great to be back, although sometimes I wake up and can't remember if I am in China or not... What a trip! Tomorrow I go back to work. Sharon's brother Mike, and his wife Rachael are here, enjoying the beautiful Alaskan winter for another week. So, it is a full house, but fun to be back with everyone. Here are some pics from Hong Kong. Mostly while there, I walked around Temple Street market in Kowloon, ate good food, rode the escalator up through the hilly Hong Kong side, rode a cable trolley up to the "Peak", a lookout viewing area of HK, with a shopping mall of course, and marveled at the enourmous city. Anyway, this ... read more

Today is thursday, and I have been working my way through the long list of things to do before I leave on Tuesday morning. I have a list for the business, a list for home, a list for packing, a list for logistics, and a list for everything else. There is an amazing amount of work to do before levaing the country for 3 weeks! Anyway, I have a lot of it done, and am starting to relax a little, as it looks like I will finish everything in time. Sharon is going to have her hands full here at home with Sam and Blaise, and sometimes Sophie and Hailey, but I know they will all be fine. I have done what I can to make things go well while I am gone. So, I think ... read more
