Monday-Tuesday, the 13th-14th Homer Spit weather mostly thick fog and rainy 48-50 degrees 9859-9879 mileage. Monday---read and slept until noon. Gathered up and did 5 loads of laundry at local laundromat that had wifi. Spent almost $40 to do so, as wash was $4.00 a load and dryer was .25 for 4 minutes. Drove up one of the residential roads that curved up on the hill and saw a pheasant male run across the road in front of us. In one of the lakes you crossed, we saw a mother duck with about 12 babies. Unfortunately, there was also an eagle nest across the road and we are not sure how many of those ducklings will be able to grow into adults. Moved down the spit to another campsite with 7-8 other Roadtreks. Tuesday---Booked and took ... read more

June 15--Homer Spit--weather mostly thick fog and rainy 52 degrees 9891 mileage.---really foggy and rained in the night. Went to local library that was really nice with all kinds of art work both inside and out. Bought an $8 bunch of books for 50 cents each. Had lunch at a bakery that we thought would have some great goodies. No such luck---muffins and cookies no pies, cakes etc. We both had a large bowl of soup for $7.00 a bowl. Stopped at a Marine Wildlife museum and looked around—they also had neat art inside. For example, they had a pottery relief sort of work of sea animals and plants about a foot or more in width that were brightly glazed around all the doors. The volunteer there suggested a drive we should take up higher on ... read more

Sunday, June 12th Captain Cook Inlet State Park partly sunny 51 degrees at 10:00 Starting mileage at 9729 The state park was named for the inlet which was named for Capt. Cook who explored this area in 1776. At various visitors’ centers we have picked up lots of pamphlets and brochures on the local area. One of the maps we have on the Kenai Peninsula gave the supposed location of places to see various wildlife. We have been driving to various locations and following their suggestions but haven’t had a one pan out. This day, we drove up gravel Marathon Road out of the town of Kenai, which was supposed to be the best place in Alaska to see the herds of caribou on the tundra there. Found the tundra, no caribou or anything else. With ... read more

HOMER After work on Thursday, Jhene and I packed up the car with our camping gear and bikes and headed down to Homer. Anchorage was beautiful and sunny and would be all weekend. The forecast for Homer: Rain. We headed towards the dark clouds to the south. A 4-hour drive down and the Paper Towel Incident A few miles after Beluga point we had to swerve into the other lane to dodge a large object in our lane. A Costco size package of paper towels? I looked over to the passenger seat. “Let’s get ‘em!” I said. Jhene’s eyes widened with excitement as we pulled into the nearest pull out an made a Uy. We grabbed the suckers and shoved on the bikes in the back. As we closed the doors an Aerostar van with ... read more

By Melisse. Ruby Grace was not of flesh, blood and bone, but she was an integral member of our family. After a long and thorough online search we came across her one day. Her photos and description glowed through cyberspace in our eyes. We took the leap and bought two one-way tickets to Philadelphia, trusting that she would be who we hoped she was. And she was. On June 19, 2009 we took her into our family and named her Ruby Grace, for her beautiful shiny color (and after a lovely girl of the same name, daughter of a dear friend in California). Together we rode away across the country, heading back to St. Louis. Ruby was now our new little movable home in which Dave and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary on our very ... read more

By Melisse. In other times and places, when I tell people my interests are art and science, I am often met with a perplexed look. "That's an unusual combination," some reply. Not so in Homer. People like me are a dime-a-dozen. It is fun to be around so many people who focus on nature with a keen curiosity of how it works as well as how magnificently beautiful and amazing it is. That being said, I have little knowledge about the sciences other than biology. The rich patterns the frost makes when it forms upon ice is breathtaking. There must be physics and chemistry causing it to happen but I currently know nothing about that. Instead I just focus on the exquisite beauty of design of these brocade tapestries and capture in photographs something that is ... read more

By Melisse. If only I had one of those hovercrafts they promised us when I was a child. It feels criminal to disturb these diamonds beneath the soles of my shoes. For as far as I can see in the vast meadow near our cabin, covering the grassy patches of the sacred wetlands near Katchemak Bay and surrounding the acres and acres of Beluga Lake in Homer, hoar frost blankets the landscape creating a sparkling, magical, dazzling sight. To the casual observer the variety of crystalline forms and patterns is mesmerizing. To the person who looks even closer it is mind-blowing, as one notices that no two crystals appear to be alike. The light reflects off of the delicate surfaces with tiny hot white lights in the cold winter air. As conditions have been perfect for ... read more

By Melisse Similar to an archeologist or paleontologist peeling off the layers of earth to unveil buried treasures, the melting snow seeps into the ground, exposing layer upon layer of sign of what occurred in the passing months. The snow "remembers" who walked upon its surface and what transpired there. At the turn of the new year this year, warm temperatures filled Homer's clean air, causing the snow to melt, revealing and then erasing the record stored in the deep accumulation of white compacted crystals. I recalled the moose that, weeks before, had walked through the yard, depositing a pile of well formed oval scat, the splash of red paint-water I tossed out the door, the "calling cards" of loving dogs who had come to visit us (one dear dogfriend who had since passed away), a ... read more

By Melisse. Today is the winter solstice for those of us who live in the northern hemisphere. The actual solstice is the moment when the earth's axis shifts so that the days start growing longer and the nights start growing shorter. On this day the sun is at its turning point from being at its lowest in the sky to embarking on its gradual assent. Quite frankly, never before have I paid all that much attention to the solstice. But here in Alaska, because at their shortest, the winter days offer only about 6 ½ hours of light, the anticipation of this day is palpable. Here there is a huge difference in day length between the winter and the summer months. I, and others, feel the solstice coming, like an uncontrollable force in our midst. We ... read more

By Melisse Nearly 6 months has passed since our last travelblog entry. It hasn't been for lack of travel or anything to report. Perhaps it's been just the opposite; We've had so much going on that our energy has been into doing rather than reflecting and reporting. As you probably know, we've left nomadic life and settled down, at least for a while. We're now living at the end of the road in Homer, Alaska… a place so fine it well makes up for my aversion to cold weather and my love of warm tropical environs. We do miss our Missouri community immensely, and our California connections as well. But our new life here is amazing and compelling in a huge wealth of ways, both socially and physically! The people here are overwhelmingly warm, welcoming and ... read more
