Thursday 5th June - Homer We woke up in our warm room at the Driftwood Inn rested, its nice not to have to pack up, all our shoes and clothes are dry. John has been held up, we were meeting at 9.30 but that gives us a chance to catch up. Overcast, warmish dry day. Got the boat from the Spit and took it up to Lisa's parents house (Romona and Todd) checked everthing was working. Down to the boat rampand got her in the water easily considering she is 25.5 foot long. Then Mike noticed one of the engines wasnt spurting water, so we turned the boat around to have a look at it - it was fine. Cruised out to sea, on our wasy to fish for Halibit and salmon. Wednesday 4th June 2008 - Homer The morning was drizzling and Mike chopped wood so we could have a fire in the evening. While on the long drop viewed the moose viewing me, very rustic $65 a night and taxes. We ere laughing as we got ready to walk up the 10 minutes to the shower still being watched by the moose no more than 8mtrs away. The farmhouse was ramshackle and the shower disgusting (only one). That was enough for me! John picked us up and most of the day we spent changing accomadation while John was also busy with his work, Beaching the Rambling Rose and Bering Hunter for matainence. We are now staying at the Driftwood Inn $80 per night, heat, tv, basin in the room, big comfy bed bathroom next door. Luxury!!! ... read more

After walking through the town and driving down to the beach, we left Kenai and headed south for our next stop, Homer. We drove through Kenai Landing and down the shore on the Kalifronsky Beach Road. Once back on the Sterling Highway, we saw cars and trucks and campers on the beach below the bluff we were on. We turned around to check it out. At the entrance to the beach road was a tent city. It looks like these native people live here permanently. A little native village called Ninilchik (pronounced Ni-NILL-chick) is on the side road that leads to the beach. On the beach there were hundreds of people clamming at low tide. Some drive their ATVs onto the mud flats. With the debris that lay around some of the campers, it looks like ... read more

Alright, now we’re really adjusted. Danielle and I were the first ones up at 8:00, so we had to hurry up and get the car packed. We were due at the water taxi at 8:45 for a full day at Kachemak Bay State Park. We made it with a little rushing and some groggy kids. The 7 of us went with Mako (our captain). On the way, he took us past Gull Island for view of nesting kittiwakes, murres, and puffins. There were hundreds of birds, including black footed kittewakes, murres, and a couple of tufted puffins. A sea otter came to visit as well. Mako dropped us at Glacier Spit with instructions on how to get to the trailhead. As we started walking, a bald eagle flew past. We hiked about 2 and a half ... read more

Hooray!! we are officially all on Alaska time. We slept until about 7:30 and after muffins at the B&B headed to Bishop’s beach. We walked along the beach at low tide and met a couple from Texas and a woman from Homer that were watching a pair of Sandhill cranes and their 2 young. We watched them until they took off. We saw a bald eagle in the distance on its nest. We continued on up the beach exploring tide pools until Gabbi called us over. She had found a spongy looking thing in the sand. When she touched it, it got smaller and squirted water out at her. After some more investigation and finding some that had completely opened, we determined that they were anemones. After some more exploring, we hiked back along the beach ... read more

Well, Jacqui was up at 5:30 a.m. today (when will she make the switch to Alaska time! #*&%?!) Then 4 and a half hours later (but still morning), Danielle, Gabbi and Jacqui met up with some homeschoolers at a park in Anchorage. We think that they might be some religious homeschoolers, but they were really nice and gave us lots of good ideas of what to do and see while in town. After work, Danielle, Gabbi, and Jacqui picked me up and we headed down the Seward Highway, because what would we rather do 3 days after landing in Anchorage, but travel 220 miles through mountain passes to the extreme southwest coast of the Kenai peninsula. On our way out of town along Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet, there were a number of cars pulled ... read more

Saturday August 11, 2007 It was really foggy in the morning. We decided to have a catch up day and I could do laundry so the weather didn’t bother us. After lunch we went to the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center; another interactive type of museum on sea life, the saltwater and fresh water around Homer and the Aleutian Islands. Homer is the mainland contact place for the Aleutians. Ferries leave regularly for different islands. We were fortunate to hear a special speaker. A history teacher who lives at Dutch Harbor on Unalaska (one of the Aleutians) wrote a book about the Japanese bombing of Dutch Harbor in WWII. He had a power point presentation and it was very interesting. He was a good speaker and held our attention for one and a half hours. We ... read more
