AUGUST 24 TUESDAY … marilyn was able to work her california magic again today as we had blue skies all day long … … tuesday was a homer spit day … the spit is a 4 mile long terminal morain … the tide was just turning when we went out on the spit and we walked out about a quarter of a mile on the hard packed sand that will be 18 feet under water when the ocean will be at high tide 6 hours later … made a video of the tide coming in … with each little wavelet the tide advanced about a foot … it definitely will be in the alaska video … we did a number of shops along the spit and eventually wound up at the salty dawg, the bar that ... read more

Shelby feeling much better, so we all decided to go to Homer for our halibut fishing trip. We traveled again along the Kenai Lake, and Kenai River . Many mountains surround Homer which is touted to be the capitol of halibut fishin. We are boondocking at Homer Spit camping area. As soon as we were set up Shelby and I started the search for the type of fishing trip we were interested in taking. About noon we headed for the docks to catch the boat for our half-day fishing trip. We both cought the 2 fish limit and ended up with about 50 lbs of halibut filets. The ladies went shopping in town and rode around sight seeing, but all agreed anything they were interested in would be a better deal at Wal-Mart. They saw ... read more

SUNDAY THE 22ND … first off, thanks for all you notes and comments … keep them coming … we enjoy hearing from you … … yesterday, sunday, we drove from seward to homer - a distance of probably 180 miles … we had an “out of the van” lunch along the kenai river … a beautiful place … the water in the river is the most phenomenal blue … guess it could be called kenai blue as i think it is unique unto itself … in addition to the wonderful lunch something else happened - i broke off a tooth that i have had a root canal capped with a permanent crown … here we were in the middle of nowhere and I called my dentist on the cell phone and he said to hold on ... read more

First day Shelby T did not get up sick. Shelby T and Jack went on the Halibut fishing trip on JACKPOT at $133.50 for halfday. 320 feet of water. Shelby T got 14 lbs of fish filets and Jack got 19 lbs. All except Shelby T. had chilli dogs for dinner while he had chicken and rice. On the boat, you could keep 2 fish, you pick at the time of the catch. Shelby T reeled in 8 from that depth and that was really a workout as this was really "catching" not "fishing". When you dropped the line to the bottom, a halibut hit it immediately and you began reeling. The fish were running small 10 to 15 lbs where normal they are 20 to 25 lbs. Oh, yes that is a RED poodle. Aleta ... read more

Sunny - low 60s. Left Kenai today headed to Homer. Still feeling badly, but a little better - feel like driving. Got to Homer and stayed in a municipal campground at $15.00 per night. This campground is located right next to a campground whose rates are $83.00 per night. We have the same view, the same waterfront sites, only we do not have electric which is all that park provides. Went for a walk and sat in front of the RV to watch the tide come in and go back out. Our neighbors, Dad, Mom, and Riley ( about the same age as Briar and wears similar glasses) sat and talked. They were from Kenai and came down to do some fishing. Cooked cheeseburgers on the "Smokey Joe" -- HMMMMM DELICIOUS!!! Still windy. Turning in for ... read more

Mary was up early because there was a very low tide that enabled her to go out and collect a certain type of seaweed she likes to use in cooking. When Madeline and I got back from walking the dogs on the beach, the seaweed was spread out on paper towels all over the stove and the countertop. It was green and brown and slimy and looked like someone had gotten sick all over the kitchen! We went to the local Farmer’s Market after breakfast. They got to visit with lots of old friends. Madeline didn’t recognize many who were her age and vice versa because she hasn’t lived here in four years. She was shy about the ones she did recognize. She related to us how much she loves to do ballroom dancing now and ... read more

Tim was up early working on the computer. Madeline, typical teenager, was sleepy-eyed. Mary was organizing breakfast. It was overcast, but not raining. We drove out to see their house and their property. Lovely place with an unbelievable view. Flowers, vegetable garden, lawn to die for. Mmmmm. Then we drove farther out and passed the famous spot where Mary ran off the road in the snow and Tim, the knight in shining jeep, came to the rescue. And the rest is history... They told us about a Russian speaking village out there, too that Mary subbed at. We ate lunch at a tasty place in town and went to their favorite bookstore. We bought tickets for a local playhouse production for this evening. We went out on the spit and saw "rafts" of sea otters, as ... read more

Mary, Tim, and Madeline met us at Aunt Jean's so we could all go to Homer together. Nancy rode with Mary and Betty (their dog), and Tim and Madeline rode with Rich and Daisy. It was about a six hour drive. We stopped in Soldotna (Hi, Sheila) for lunch and to shop for groceries. Madeline rode with the ladies the rest of the way. Of course, we all solved the problems of the world along the way. There were low clouds and rain, but it was still a beautiful drive through green mountains, past calm lakes, and along the ocean. We could barely see across Cook Inlet to see the volcanoes. Just a peek, not well enough to see steam. We drove around a corner and there in all its glory was Homer, a sparkling town ... read more

By Melisse. Homer, Alaska is dazzelingly beautiful. The entire small town is flanked by the crystalline waters of Katchamak Bay, backdropped by a range of spectacular zigzaggy mountains which at this time are still covered with snow. The view is breathtaking and omnipresent. What could be better?! At this time of year it is fully visible all of the time except between about 1:30 and 3:00am when it is nearly dark (but not dark enough to see stars). Birds and boats accent the bay. The wonderfully interesting collection of people who have chosen to live in Homer celebrate this view by building homes designed to take it in as fully as possible. ... read more
