I thought we’d told all that there was to tell from Mazatlan, hoped that we’d start out this entry with crazy stories from the little town of Tequila where it just so happens they make the drink by the same name. But I would be remiss if I didn’t say a word or two about Paul’s squid incident, although I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if we left it out. The night after we posted our last blog entry, Paul thought it would be nice to eat dinner in a real restaurant, maybe even a nice restaurant. Most of our food has been coming from street stalls or the market which usually suits us just fine. But Paul had a hankering for something a little more upscale where we thought maybe the health standards might be a ... read more

From San Cristobal we took an overnight bus to Oaxaca City. It took 12 hours and I managed to keep my food down for this journey! We were both looking forward to Oaxaca as we had heard great things. Upon arrival though things didn’t start too well, the taxi dropped us on the edge of the Zocalo as he couldn’t go any further due to the entire area being blockaded with corrugated iron fences. We entered the barricade through a gap in the fence and the place looked like a bombsite. It had also been overrun by mass graffiti artists. Our first impression was that the taxi driver had just dropped us in the middle of nowhere and as it was dark (6am) we didn’t know what to think. We managed to find some street signs ... read more

And so I´m at the end, after a couple of days in Mexico city again and meeting Anne and her family, which was great, I am flying back this evening (Monday), Mexican time and should arrive in the UK Tuesday evening for flat-hunting and work-shoe shopping before I start near Chester on 18th September. I wanted to write a suitably sloppy blog to say thanks for reading and telling you all about all the things I´d learnt about myself and Latin America and the world during the past year. Such things could include my new-found patience (which may or may not transfer back to the UK), my improved Spanish, or insights such as the body doesn't digest the pulpy bits in orange juice, beer is often cheaper than water, never wear white and you don't need ... read more

Well, today is the first day of classes and i only had one.....basic espanol, which really wasn´t even close to basic. she didn´t explaing anything and just started talking. i know the least of everyone in the class and really had no idea what was going on for most of it. i´m really gonna have to study my butt off for this one so hopefully it pays off. tomorrow is orientation so i´m not sure what we will be doing all day but it should be fun. the campus is literally only 3 buildings, one is the cafeteria with really cheap and really good food, the other is the library which is only 1 floor and nothing compared to the UofC and then there are computers on the second floor, the other building is only three ... read more

Another week down!! I realize I'm over the half-way hump and will be home now in less than two weeks!! Yikes! I have so much more I want to absorb before returning to the US. My school week last week was slightly different. The particular teacher that I had focused a bit more on cultural aspects and day-to-day type things, which was great, but I also realized that those dang Pronombres will keep returning to haunt me time and time again. So not having those down 100% was frustrating for me. However, Dave you'll be pleased...I requested (and finally got!!!) Rosanna for grammar this week. So I hope to conquer the pronombres this week..... The weekend brought more travels. Saturday Anne, Gabe, and I got up really early and caught a bus to Taxco, an enchanting ... read more

So I am two days in, and its fab! Pretty hot, but not overwhelmingly {real word?} so, but according to Lupita the hottest time is during November and December, so THAT should be interesting. Havent {excuse the lack of real grammar, I cant find the apostrophe on the keyboard haha} gone to the beach yet, even though I can basically see it from the driveway of the condo, but there will be plenty of time for beaching. There is so much moisture here, so humid. It has rained a bit both days {after hot weather of course}, which actually helps, becuase with the windows open it pushes colder air in. and speaking of colder air, God Bless the Person who invented Air Conditioners!!! I Heart that person!! So far I havent really done much. We went ... read more

Having left the guys early in the morning to get back to Mexico in time to avoid spending the night in Chetumal I don´t really remember any of the journey (other than the fact that I slept for the whole way and always had lots of space on the bus...could have been because I smelt?!) Caught the bus to this tiny little remote town south of Tulum called Mahahual. Again, it is meant to be amazing to dive there as the reef has loads of wrecks which are easily dived. This is what I had planned to do but when I arrived I discovered that there were no hostels in the town...only a few expensive hotels or really shabby beach cabanas, which when you are on your own were still fairly expensive...anyway, so I decided that ... read more

(August 28th through the 30th 2005) We left early Sunday morning for Oaxaca. It was Pollo, Bere, Lucha, Kosme, and I all squeezed into Pollo's father's volkswagen; we all couldn't fit in his jeep, plus luggage. So, he and his father switched cars for the few days we were going to Oaxaca. Pollo had worked all night at his valet job, so he started the drive since he hadn't slept all night. Not because of the work, but because of an incident at work quite funny. (Well, one of the valets had dropped a customers keys in a sewer drainage--the customer had to drive his car home. Since no one was small enough, Pollo had to do the honors. He got down to his boxers, and jumped in. It took him over an hour to find ... read more

Said goodbye to Cheryl at Tulum bus station, and while she headed to Playa del Carmen for a week with Mark, I headed to Merida.. planning for a week of culture and Spanish lessons and spending less money :) .. I did do a few hours of Spanish lessons with a teacher from CIS, and managed to fit in a bit of culture (well a couple of galleries, a museum if that counts!.. and there's lots of free events at the cultural centre here, so have been to watch a few random things.. such as a Belgian film with Spanish subtitles, and some traditional Catalan dancing! .. hmm a deserate way to try and fill time, or making the most of what's free.. i'm not sure!) BUT met lots of nice people, so spent most of ... read more

I´ve been in mexico city for 5 days now and it has been amazing! Why haven´t I come here before? I¨ve been quite surprised at how accessible, friendly, historic, affluent (in parts), and energetic this city is. I´m not one for big cities in the first place, but I am having a great time. I have not had a single problem. (Famous last words?) My hostel Cathedral is great so far?clean, hot showers, lockers in the room, etc. Have to get used to 4 or 5 roommates, but it is not too bad because the only time all are there is when we are all sleeping. Have met some very interesting people from all over coming for all different reasons: a girl from Illinois who heads up the Mexican branch of Witness for peace, an Austrian ... read more
