What can I say, I can´t think of anything right now. Palenque was some time ago now. The pictures may have to do most of the talking for me. I only stayed in Palenque for two nights and three days. One night in the town, which wasn´t very interesting, just as the guidebooks said. I stayed one night in a hotel within the grounds of the site, it was really nice but quite expensive. The site was amazing and surrounded in the most amazing array of green (trees and plants) truely beautiful. This is where I also started to notice red flowers everywhere. Walking back from the ruins we got caught in a serious downpour, got truely soaked to the bone. I really enjoyed the experience being surrounded by the green and soaked in the warm ... read more

Well we made it into Mexico, but not without a little bit of a run around. First, there were problems with the car. You see, the guy who claimed he was head over heels for good ol’ Su was a bit fickle and never called us back. This left us in a bit of a lurch because the only other people who showed any interest didn’t have any money (I guess they didn’t understand me when I wrote in the ad that we must be paid in cash when we come through El Paso because we ain’t sticking around.) Both Paul and I quietly began to panic. But the gods were smiling upon us. Less than 5 miles from the city limits we got a phone call from potential buyer #4. Turns out, Dave was legit ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Chetumal July 30th 2006

It’s about time that I tried to write something about this part of the leg. Got to the bus station at 6am, I know I said I wouldn’t do that again but this was fine, I just chilled in the station watching music videos, sleepily contemplating using the internet. I decided to call Musa and guess what; she was just in the midst of writing me an email. We had a blinding chat, can’t remember what about now but I know that it was so good to hear each others voices. It gave me a lot of energy. Chetumal was the gateway to another dimension and its quiet stretched out streets and airy character just added to it. It’s like they built the city and forgot to put people in it. Having said that the 1st ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida July 29th 2006

After Chichen Itza we went to the largest city up to now on our travels, Merida. It was a nice enough place and for me just a larger version of Valladolid but a bit cheaper which is always nice! The first day didn’t start to well as the bus dropped us off at a bus station not on the map, so took us a while to find our bearings and then even longer to find some accommodation because it fell on a weekend. After about 2 hours of walking around in similar heat you are getting at home but with a heavy back pack! In the end we got lucky and found a lovely place. It was an old colonial house, which from the outside looked nothing special, but in the center was a luscious green ... read more

Things are changing a lot this week at Cuauhnáhuac.... The Colorado group and Cal Poly group both leave for the airport at 5am tomorrow morning, so Anne and I are both losing our wonderful roomies. *tear* However, it's not completely the end of an era just yet....Anne and I will also be boarding a bus EARLY tomorrow morning to meet Ashley, Jordan, and Sandra (all from the Colorado group) for two days of fun in Mexico City. We've booked a hostel for the night and plan to see Xochimilco and the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo museums tomorrow and whatever else we want to see on Sunday. I'm super excited to be staying in a hostel again....brings back fond memories from last summer!! I just wish Steph and Jenny were here, too, so we could all ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Tulum July 28th 2006

14 hour bus journey to Tulum was very comfortable (posh bus!), apart from I woke up in the middle of the night to find that the bus had stopped at a military check point (lots of armed men), and a man was standing in the aisle, saying to me "don't be alarmed, we're just making routine checks.. where are you from?".. so I told him.. and he seemed OK with that hmmm! .. oh yes and a slight problem with smelly feet... the walking sandals don't seem to be living up to their "odour free" promise! Tulum is very expensive, though we've found a lovely cabaña on the beach for GBP25 a night, which is the most we've paid anywhere so far. The cabaña is made of sticks and thatch, so plenty of room for iguanas, ... read more

July 27, 2006 It's good to be typing on a normal keyboard again. And fitting in with crowds of Asians (I love my yellow peeps). Yep I am now writing to you from Los Angeles, California, United States. I got back to Phoenix on Monday afternoon. I hung out with Robert for a little while, since he picked me up from the airport, had lunch, then quickly departed for L.A. I got here around 9:30 in the evening, so it wasn't too bad. The bad part was that there's a horrible heat wave here. I was dying that first night. Well, I should say that because a lot of people have actually died in California from the heat. I had gotten spoiled from the nice Guadalajara weather. The other thing I really miss is the skin ... read more

Back to my home base This is just a quick update to allow those that began to worry as I approached my one week point without contact that I am doing fine. After one week in Cuba I returned back to Cancun four days earlier than expected. The updates and pictures related to that time will come in the near future. For now I am staying in Cancun with Marco at the house of a guy we met while in Havana. Tomorrow evening the three of us will head out to Playa Del Carmen for the weekend. Cuba was without a doubt full of experiences from every possible level of travel. To put them all in their proper place will take some time, but I promise that the updates will come and the stories will enlighten ... read more

North America » Mexico » Oaxaca » Oaxaca July 25th 2006

It´s so long to Mexico City and off into central Mexico, Oxaca State.... Mexico City to Pueblo Took a collectivo (VAN for 10 people) from Mexico City to Oxaca, via Pueblo. Mexico City to Oxaca (pronounced wohaka) is about 7 hours or 500 KM. This is where I met two Brits and a New Zealander (photos attached). On the way, we did a short stop (2 hours) in Pueblo (pop 1.3 million, elevation 2162m) which is a very Spanish city. I mean they didn’t want independence from Spain when the rest of the country broke away.... even today they are a little estranged (snobby) apparently. This town was also a major base for the Catholic Church, with some 70++ churches used to convert the natives. Overall it was a nice clean town though, with some wonderful ... read more

A short bus ride from San Cristobal and we've arrived in the hot, sweaty jungle.. EVERYTHING is very damp after a night of rain under a thatched roof, our clothes smell and our books are curling! No rooms where we originally wanted to stay, so are staying in a sweet but fairly basic room in the middle of the jungle - on the road out of Palenque on the way to the ruins. Shared bathrooms on the camp site (no so nice!) .. but lovely to be able to hear the jungle sounds.. though a few too many spiders webs and big moths in our room for my liking! Palenque ruins are amazing.. we only visited about 5% of the buildings that are hiding in the jungle (the areas that have been excavated and uncovered).. though ... read more
