San Cristóbal de las Casas San Cristóbal sits high up in the mountains in the southerly state of Chiapas, just a few hours from the Guatamalan border and it´s cool climate so different from other ´nearby´towns in Mexico that it´s like a different country. The overnight bus - 12 hours from Puerto Esconidido - was no where near as traumatic as it had threatened to be, although I am glad it was too dark to see the cause of the winding roads. Actually, despite the near-arctic conditions on board, I slept a lot better than I did the last 2 nights in the horrible, sweaty, busy youth hostel. The town is full of little low colourful, cobbled streets and being in a gentle valley means that there a quite a lot of nice views without any ... read more

(I promise you won't be getting updates this often... it's just that a lot has happened in the first week here, and I took lots of photos I wanted to post before I forget about them.) Pues, ¿dónde empezar? Saturday 7/22 Jorge picked me up at my hotel (after several--about 6-- attempts at getting a hold of me). He's really nice, super lindo, and very very eager to help out an extranjera (foreigner) who has no idea how to go about finding an apartment in this city. It was great because we drove over to campus, he took me up and down some of the streets, showed me different campus buildings... how cool is this?!: two of their campus buildings have nicknames like licuadora and servilleta because they look like a blender and napkin holder, respectively. ... read more

New Blog dedicated to my trips only ^^ So on July 7th, I decided to go to Mexico with my sister. It's cool that she could take days off whenever she wants. We took a last minute trip on the internet, and I must admit that I didn't even have time to prepare what to see, how to speak with the local people etc. I regret it, but anyway, I had discovered a very nice country. I'll go back for sure! ... read more

I survived a WET Monday back at school!! It started raining last night while I was walking home and was still raining when I woke up this morning. Now it's 2:30pm and it just stopped raining!! Made for an interesting walk to school this morning.... There were about 10 of us Americans all walking along the busy Avenida Morelos squealing and throwing our bodies against the wall to protect our clothes from the gallons of water being splashed at us from the bus drivers who get enjoyment from our pain. But at least we were all drowning in our misery together!! If I haven´t explained it before, every week I will have a new teacher and a new class set-up, so it's kind of exciting to check the master list on Mondays to see where I've ... read more

Okay, what can i say about Mexico city...... WOW! Totally not what i expected!! Vital Statistics Population: 19 Million ++ Elevation: 2280 M Land Area: Huge Polictical Demonstrations Firstly, i was staying in the city central historical district and on my first day there, the good people of Mexico City decided to hold demonstrations due to the problems with the recent election! GREAT! There were people and police everywhere (not sure how many turned up but you can imagine with a pop of nearly 20 million it doesnt take much commitment to get a few 100K of people!!). Regardless i did go in and take a look and overall it was pretty calm with no violence or arrests.... certainly an interesting first day. Frankly speaking, wandering around for the first few hours i could not even ... read more

Mazunte was a very relaxing place, within a couple of days I’d made a couple of local friends and met a nice Swiss girl called Andrea. She gave me good tips for San Cristobal in Chiapas state. I also found a much cheaper place to stay run by Juanita and her lovely family who seemed as fascinated with me as I was with the place. Have to say though on the first night in my cheap and cheerful room the mosquitoes feasted like it was thanks giving. Boy they got my arse, literally. Those of you who know how I feel about mosquitoes love of my blood will know I wasn’t best pleased about getting 10 bites on my bum. Yes 10 bites, I was well vexed. I mean to say, did they have to call ... read more

11hrs and some puke later, I arrive in San Cristobal as sick as a dog. Vomiting all over myself half way through the longest bus ride I've taken yet was only the beginning. Not much fun trying to stop yourself from puking for 6hrs whilst still covered in the 1st lot of puke, but I managed. Had to catch up with myself for an hour before I could cross the road from the bus station to the nearest hotel, where I lay all day and puked some more. The next day was similar, I don't know if it's a good thing that I enjoyed the meal so much that did this to me. Even in my deepest darkest illest moments (they were to come), I still had to say, 'damn that was a tasty meal', perhaps ... read more

Hi everyone! I've actually already traveled to Cuernavaca and returned. I started a blog at the end of my first week; then continued writing during the second and third weeks but then I lost track of things. I've decided to send what I wrote and try to send a ''follow up'' within the next few weeks. I hope that you're all doing well! BLOG for MEXICO: I've arrived safely in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and have successfully completed three weeks of Spanish courses. I flew into Mexico City on July 6th and met Tammy and Diana at the airport. From there, the three of us took a bus into Cuernavaca. For the first two nights, I stayed with Diana's family. Diana's mom and dad are really nice and invited Tammy and me to relax in their home as ... read more

Wow...I feel like I have a million things to say! And we'll see how well they come out.... You see, the more I try to speak Spanish, the less I can speak English. The words get all jumbled up in my mouth and then come out in a rather frightening way! So now I can't speak Spanish well, nor can I speak English well. Hmph! I finished up my first week of classes on Friday! I can hardly believe how fast the week went, although every day felt like one of those long "Mexico days." After class and comida I usually end up in the zócalo or back at the school or somewhere doing something. There never seems to be a dull moment here. I've bonded a lot with my roomie Ashley this week, so it'll ... read more
